I entered into an agreement with Alex based on a very specific timeline so I could move out of my old house and into the new. Alex agreed to it and promised up and down he would get the job done in time. Then the lies started.he happily took our money , in cash, and pushed back the timeline. He repeatedly stated he would be done on certain days only to find out he needed another week or another few days. He ended up being 6 weeks over due. He still did not complete the job and even kept a kitchen drawer as ransom and demanded we signs a paper stating we would not take him to court or leave negative reviews on any of his accounts before he would give it back. I refused. I ended up taking Alex to small claims court and winning.he has refused to pay and I have not heard from him since. If Alex screwed you over like he didn't me take him to small claims court. You will win just based on him doing contractors work with out being a licensed contractor tractor. If anyone wants to know more contact me on the side and I will break everything down for you and even help you learn how to file the small claims paperwork. He's the Biggest Scam Artist of all time. He gives a low price then every time you meet him he up charges and makes the most random excuses that are his fault but yet blames you for it. His measurements are always off on purpose and he is not a licensed contractor. He comes towards the end and says that the cabinets don't fit the wall as in that's our fault when yet he is the one that measured them. And then tells you it's an extra $600 but then when you meet him he says it's $2200 he's a scam and needs to be shut down for the unlicensed work he does and scam he is committing. And he is very rude seems like he's on some type of drug. When you tell him it's his fault he starts to yell and say I'm not gonna do anything I'm done. And cusses a lot for no reason I will never recommend him to anyone very unsafe dealing with crooks like this. read more

Alex Barbra is an UNLICENSED CONTRACTER! CA requires all contracts for home improvement over $499 requires the contractor to be licensed. His Contracts do not list any contractors license, his cards have no contractors license listed, website has no contractors license and Cabinet Modern has not listed on the CSLB website on. July 2nd, 2021 https://tinyurl.com/austtwrd. Contracts, are not legible, CA state law limits deposits of 10% of contract or $1,000 as a deposit but Alex my estimate asked for almost 50%. I WISH I CAN GIVE HIM A NEGATIVE NUMBER! Alex also charges for estimates and no legit licensed contractor will do that. STAY AWAY!!!!! Alex Barba deserves only to be locked up in jail IMO. read more

To make things short im not a customer. But just like everyone else i was scammed by the man . I have an upholstery business. This man did nit even a bring a full deposit. With his many 1,000 excuses. Made me do a job for his boat in under 24 hours. Claimed to always have the check ready . Used his business name for the invoice so he could use it with the irs for taxes. Never paid me. This man has drinking problems, smokes a lot of weed. He's so irresponsible, he's such a big old man to have mommy issues. Since the first day i met him he was always canceling appointments and changing the times. Words can't seem to describe what a lying theft he is. He steals from all his clients and prides him self with pictures. The one and only time i showed up to his business, the following day he claimed that i scarred his mom when you could clearly see in the picture im no where near his mom nor did i step foot inside his business. Until i get my court date settled with this man i will be bringing people awareness of what this man is doing to not only people who he hires, but also people that trust doing business with him in his own company. Alex barba is actually a pretty good business man that tries his best to please his customers and his suppliers I don't understand the reviews because the guy does work very hard to please people and make sure everyone's happy. Cabinet Modern is actually a good business run by Alex Barba and his parents and he's a fairly honest guy when it comes to business so if you want your cabinets installed right. If u want your place to look really nice and modern, it's gotta be futuristic with no handles or anything that takes away from the cabinets design. Look at the pictures on his site, they're like push button cabinets installed by cabinet modern installers, very unique and no one hardly has those in homes, I've only seen that style in top of the line businesses, ​ Alex owns CABINET MODERN and hes very cool and laid back he does a good job salesman and perhaps not the best at installations in the past but he assured me he hires the best installers and got rid of the 1s that may have caused bad reviews he also explain everything in an educational mannor, he really knows measurements that needs to be done and is up front and tells the truth about all the costs including labor installation and materials. He's not cheap but neither is the really good looking kitchen that akex's Cabinet modern provides. read more

Alex Barba (aka CabinetModern) is unethical and should be avoided at all costs. We gave him multiple chances to finish a very large kitchen remodel and he failed each time. I can write all of our issues, but to keep it short and professional, just dont use him or his company. Every negative review is accurate and correct. We did try to work with him and we gave him every chance to do the right thing...but it is not in his nature. He will blame everyone else if any problems arrive..and in construction, there will always be problems. We are taking him to court for taking large amounts of money from us and not giving it back when he couldn't he no longer wanted to finish the job. And yes, he is unlicensed, which is why we will be filing a complaint with the contractor's licensing board. Do yourself a favor...and find someone you can trust to do your cabinets. read more

Everything in the earlier reviews on here is 100% accurate. Alex will tell you that the bad reviews come from people who "expected too much" and "were never happy". Read my story below for a un-heated, detailed analysis of what you should expect. Look at the photo I uploaded 1 year later. - Unable to use a measuring tape and notepad effectively, which you would think would be a prerequisite for cabinetry. - Will use substandard materials, lower than specified in contract. Will use substandard methods of building to save himself additional costs, to the expense of your cabinets. - Hires his workers / installers off craigslist on a day-to-day basis. They could be anybody, working with him their first day installing your cabinets. He will lie about this, and say they are his brother/cousin/etc. - Will lie, and then lie, and then lie again 2 minutes later once things go south. - Likes to hold pieces "hostage" for final payment" - Violent tendencies. Threatened my family. One of his workers wanted to be paid, and Alex choked him. Worker filed police report. To the long version, edited down to fit yelp. Alex is using a photo of the project in his Yelp account (blue quartz countertops, backspace tile not in yet), I will use this photo to describe some of the issues with Alex. I gave Alex an exact layout of what I want, we get exact measurements and materials/hardware. He sends me contract with those details, including the brand of hardware and grade of materials. Install day, in photo I'll refer to them numerically from right to left. He starts bringing in pieces. First the kick-box comes in, and he made it the wrong size as it's almost 2 feet too short. Next up, piece #1 the large pantry came in. I had specified the pantry would go all the way up to the ceiling (to match the cabinet). He brings it in, and it's 10" too short, leaving a 10" gap above the pantry. He offered to build a small cabinet to fill the space (in the photo, notice weirdly small 3rd doors at top). So at this point he starts installing piece #3 (drawers) and piece #4 (sink cabinet). It's at this point Alex realized his errors. Does he stop the install and try to fix it? NOPE. How about instead he'll just install the sink cabinet over a foot off center from the window? Yeah, that'll work! At this point I had to put the brakes on this. He has trouble admitting he's wrong and insists it should be that way. After some very clear discussion about where the plumbing is centered, and where we would commonly expect the sink to go, we discover he completely forgot to put piece #2 in his plan, causing the short. I also point out that he "forgot" to spray clear varnish on the fronts of the drawers on pieces #3 and 5, he promises he will fix it. So he heads out to make all the missing pieces. I notice that piece #3 and 5 drawers that were spec'ed to be the exact same size, are actually 1.5" different from each other. I also notice that instead of doing the cabinets "bookended" as agreed, he cut them from different pieces of wood to save money. He came back a few days later with a new helper. First decides he's going to spray the varnish IN MY BACKYARD. After he installs them, I run a finger over them and it feels sandy from all the dirt that was picked up. He says he will sand out the dirt and clean it up; but he never did. Also forgot to paint panel on pantry white. Stops answering calls, disappears for several months. Finally calls, landlord locked him out of shop. He shows up with the cabinet. First problem, It was in the EXACT same state as when he took it hostage, not finished. Zero work had progressed. He demands final payment, I say no and to finish the job. He gets angry and yells. Makes threats, "A guy like you WITH A FAMILY shouldn't screw over other people like this". He agrees to the items I listed and left. I never heard from him again. In Retrospect: Project done, we went on with our lives never hearing from Alex again. I discovered a few more problems after the fact: The contract specified one specific, high-quality, type of plywood for the cabinet faces. In the end I discovered that Alex instead used the most inexpensive Chinese import version he could. He also did not install Blum hardware as specified in the contract that he wrote up and had me sign, and used lower quality off-brand drawer hardware that is already failing. As a result of either the choice of Chinese plywood, or him being too stingy when spraying the varnish, after one year ALL of the cabinets that he installed were showing signs of delamination. A light-colored raised rash, bubbling up the wood along the edges, see the picture I uploaded for the ugliness. I also discovered that while he varnished the outside faces of the doors, he did not bother spraying the INSIDE of the doors. Work with this guy if you want. Just make sure your contact has dimensions, material/hardware, a big final payment, and penalties for each week of delay. read more

As promised, here are the pictures of kitchen with the cabinets installed. Obviously, we still have work to do, but the cabinets are mostly done. All said, we are still thrilled with cabinets, but we did have a couple of minor problems along the way. Some of the hardware wasn't fastened correctly, the toe kicks were cut incorrectly in a couple of cases, and we are missing panels for under the top cabinets. In all honesty, we probably should have realized some of this when we picked the cabinets up, but we didn't. Our biggest complaint is a lack of communication. I have left several messages and only received one callback which I missed. If it weren't for his mysterious disappearance, we probably could have lived with all of the little issues because most of them Alex could easily fix. We still feel the value we get from our cabinets has been worth the inconvenience, but that is something you will have to decide for yourself. read more

If I could give them ZERO Stars I will. They DO NOT adhere to their agreement on price or quality. The cabinets do not fit, everything falls apart within a year and Alex will avoid fixing the faults at all costs and will give you the run around. Nothing fits, everything is misaligned, and has screws and sharp edges poking out. The tile is incorrectly put in and my kitchen is a mess. DO NOT EVER HIRE THEM. They are the worst. Alex and his crew did a great job refacing my bathroom cabinets. And his price was better than most others. His installer, Jesus, was very skilled and he made sure I was absolutely satisfied before the job was complete. I also visited Cabinets Modern's store front where they manufacture and Alex was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions about the process and methods. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH ALEX. he is such a crook and so unprofessional. your cabinets will smell toxic and he will try to hustle you for money before he even finishes your job. he is not honest and i would not trust him to work in my home (or anyone elses) ever again. he left our job halfway done and tried to get us to give him more money to finish. we deceided to cut our losses. plus, not only is he unprofessional, so is the quality of his work. his cabinets were installed with scratches and marks and they look banged up when they are supposed to be new cabinets. read more

He took money, $800, for a very simple job. He also took a drawer from our kitchen saying he needed it to match the cabinet. He didn't do the work he promised and he kept the drawer...that's right...one of his workers said he lost the drawer....he lies and says he will do the work, but then he doesn't. Is what he does a crime? I think so. Don't be conned by this con artist. Stay away. We are NINE MONTHS into the job and our kitchen is a disaster, and nowhere near complete. All we ever get are more lies and empty promises. We have never experienced such lack of professionalism, shoddy workmanship, and complete disregard for our time and money. My husband has known Alex and his family for years, yet Alex has the gall to rip us off. He is a shame to his family. He recently told us that he can't work on our job now because he just received a new contract in excess of $70,000. God help that poor soul! I'm off to the lawyers office today as not only has he not completed our job, he has prevented us from refinancing our home before September 30, 2011 when the jumbo maximum for a home was lowered from 729K to 625K....completely ruining our chances to refinance. Good thing he got that $70K contract!!!! He is going to need more than that when our lawyer gets through with him! He owes us in excess of $6000 just from the $40 a day penalty he signed if our job wasn't completed on time. Not to mention the cost of replacing what shoddy work has been done and the damages to us for possibly loosing our home now. read more
