It is made with a buttery hazelnut crust and currants. Not raspberries like I have always seen on the knock-offs. (Although admittedly, those are pretty good too....no harm, no foul......they just aren't really what linzer tortes really are.) Anyhow, it's a busy little shop and we had a private section upstairs to enjoy our coffee. Our guide told us to put the little chocolate in the coffee too. Centrally located not far from the town center (Stadtplatz) in the pedestrian shopping thoroughfare Schmidtgasse. One side is the cafe/bakery side and next door is more of a bar and cigs atmosphere. The pastries are all prepared fresh daily! They open at 8:30 so you can come by for a great breakfast of meat and bread/rolls or you can skip straight to a piece of Sacher or a cream Schnitte! Their prices are reasonable, especially considering it's location in a very popular part of old town Wels. The staff is friendly and more than willing to assist us with our broken German and their really good English so that's a huge plus! My mother uses a walker , so I was holding the door as she entered and since there is a step down at the entrance, half the staff and a few customers all came running to help her down the step. Awesome. Aside from the delicious baked goods and the absolutely fantastic gelato, they also offer hearty meals. A lot of Austrian and German specialties. I enjoyed a big portion of Currywurst mit Pommes. Perfectly executed. One of the better ones I have eaten in my lifetime. Mom opted for potato cakes with apple sauce. Judging from the speed she devoured those, they must have been really good also... So good she refused to share even one bite. Grrr. Of course we each had a slice of their cakes. Both were delicious and we wished we could eat more, but alas we couldn't eat another bite. Though the address says it is on Getreidegasse, it is located down an alleyway off it. It is a longtime Salzburg confectionery as it was founded in 1880. The shop has a delectable selection of sweet treats, including pastries, cakes (individual and slices) and chocolates. They also serve coffee drinks and have a good amount of seating if you are dining in. I loved this place so much that I visited it twice in one day for breakfast and an evening dessert. Their hazelnut pastry is something I still crave and think about. And make sure to try their sacher torte if you love chocolate cakes. It is clear why this business has stood the test of time. The quality of their products and the service here is great.
