This was partially due to class timing and partially due to the way that the class was set up in "teams." My team was very focused on how to do the recipe "by the book" (aka no variance from the demo) which took us longer to get through than that of the recipe cards that were handed out. Sprouting Chefs is new to the Ann Arbor area, and offers hands-on cooking classes for children and teens ages 8-16. Reasonably priced at $45 a session and conveniently located in the spacious kitchen of the Westminster Presbyterian Church on Scio Church Road, Sprouting Chefs offers attendees the chance to make new and theme based meals in a safe, fun and supportive environment. Throughout the 2 1/2 hour class, Lilian and an assistant provided supervision and instruction to the students, as they moved through all of the steps to make three age appropriate, yet creative menu items. In the class my daughter attended, they made a cucumber salad, homemade Southern-style macaroni and cheese, and mixed berry shortcakes with lemon curd. Completely at ease with the children, Lilian infused the class with instruction on technique, such as how to properly hold a knife; kitchen rules, such as to always say "behind" when you are coming behind someone with boiling water or a hot pan; and nutrition information, such as information on the differences between organic, locally grown and conventional produce. At the end of the class, which included a generous tasting of all the dishes, my daughter and her friends left with a take home bag of the dishes they had prepared and a recipe booklet so that they could make the recipes at home with their families. The girls had a wonderful time and I would highly recommend the class to other children and teens who enjoy and want to learn more about cooking.

I attended the October 2011 event. What a fun evening it turned out to be. There were vendors galore. All handing out very useable freebies. The stage was filled with cooking equipment and gadgets of all kinds. Much of which was raffled off to the attendees during the demos. Emcee for the evening was Joe H., Yelper who also does the Hungry Dudes food blog. He did a super job. Michael Barna was the performing chef. He gave many valuable cooking tips and techniques as he prepared the various dishes. The prepared dishes were also raffled off to the attendees. Again this was a fun filled evening. I left uplifted with many new ideas for food creation. I will most definately be at the 2012 spring school.
