Last night my life was saved by a lamb shank. Not only was I well beyond the hangry point, but one of the people we were meeting for dinner (as well as for the first time) had apparently had a few (bottles) at a party beforehand, and decided the dinner table would be the perfect place to address her hatred for all things American. From GMOs to Obamacare to tax code to farm subsidies, we heard it all. And more. And you know what, it didn't even matter because I was in heaven. It wasn't just any lamb shank - it was hugged by prunes, red wine and cinnamon and served on a potato and white bean mash with lemon and herbs along with an apple and radish salad. Our salty companion blabbed on and on, getting angrier and angrier at our lack of notable reaction (other than wide eyes and guttural sounds of satisfaction) while we imperviously enjoyed our gorgeous meals. The delicious didn't quit and the grilled whiting fillet served over eggplant chackchouka was flavoured so perfectly I could not stop stuffing my face to mount any form of defense, which only intensified her tirade. Due to that, we had to cut out before dessert, but you'd better believe we'll be back for the apricot, walnuts and rose custard! We'll just choose to leave our "friend" at home next time. I walk past this place everyday from work and have always been wanting to try it because the menu looks so different from the general fare you get from normal breakfast cafe menus. The fact it's Middle Eastern is probably why it attracted me in the first place and the fact it's got this cute bar where patrons can sit near the waiters (great if you're solo). I always see people typing away on their laptop which I like. I'm into cafes who allow people just to chill out, read a book or do their thing. After a lot of deliberation because all the options on the breakfast menu all looked great, I ordered the baked eggs with chachouska with the Morrocan sweet mint tea. I'm definitely going back for the tea. It was sooo nice, refreshing and not at sweet I had thought it would be. The spices and flavours from the baked eggs were just delicious. The bread that came with it was also different from the normal sourdough, there was a bit of butter on them which made them extra nice. My friend had the scrambled eggs, with spinach and feta. Such a interesting combination and also delicious (I had a sneak bite). I'm keen to come back and try their dinner menu!! read more

When the first thing you hear upon entering a cafe is, "I really like your jumper!" you know it's a good day. I mean, that feels good, a compliment! Not that they're rare or anything, I mean, I don't get a lot, but they're not like Ivory or the Tasmanian Devil. I'm off topic. What I mean by this is that it's a relaxed and friendly environment and you get the sense that 90% of the people who go in there are regulars. You stand at the bar and order your coffee (Though they do have table service as well.) and someone walks in, they are greeted by name and asked if they'll be having the regular. Someone who's been sitting behind you leaves, the guy behind the counter says, "See you tomorrow Nancy." and the cycle continues. A great thing you have to try if you go to Cafe Mint are the savoury muffins. I'm a savoury man myself and I'll always favour the flavour of a savoury favourite, such as these muffins. They really are something special. Sun dried tomato, pumpkin, spinach. I'm like Pavlov's Dog. Put down a Mint savoury muffin and I'll salivate. Ring the bell to signify that a muffin is on its way, and I'll say, "Why is there a bell ringing? Is that the fire alarm? Should I run? I should run. I'm running!" So, maybe I'm not exactly like Pavlov's dog, for starters I'm not a dog. But, well, what I mean is, there are loads and loads of Cafe's on Crown Street, so if you find one where everyone seems to know each other, where people don't just attend once, but are repeat customers, people who are worth two in the bush, you know they're coming back for a reason. I'm going back. My reason? Those savoury flavoursome muffins. read more

The thing that struck me about Mint was the classic wine bar set up inside. I popped in for a quick breakfast before work and already there were some die hard locals reading the papers around the bar and having some friendly banter with the waiters. Its that type of place... you know, where everybody knows your name. Unless its your first time of course. Nevertheless, I was still treated like a local and it felt good. I had a smoothie which went down well, but wasn't cheap at $7.50. If there is one drawback it is the prices. It just seemed a tad pricey. By all accounts though, I believe the food is good. It has a middle eastern theme to it and the chef/owner just seems like the kinda guy who has some real secret recipes up his sleeve. I'll definitely pop in again. Down the dodgy end on Crown Street (that is, near the Cleveland Street intersection) this little café-come-restaurant serves up an impressive selection of Middle Eastern inspired fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Friends and I were after a cheap, fast, delicious meal and ended up here after a recommendation from a friend who lives nearby. The seats outside were a little messy and the waitress a tad flustered, but we were starving and it was already 9 o'clock so we really weren't fussed. We quickly realised they offered a BYO option for $7 corkage - huzzah! - and sent one party member round the corner to choose a bottle while the rest of us ordered. We chose some bits from their share menu - a couple of the meze plates with hummus, baba ghanoush, slices of grilled haloumi and marinated olives with warm Turkish bread on the side were just what we needed to snack on late at night with a vino in hand. read more

The food at this place is absolutely amazing. A Surry Hills treasure and a definite favourite of mine. It is very clear that the menu has been carefully constructed as every dish on the menu consists of the most amazing flavours. What may appear to be a 'standard' dish like chicken breast with veg is actually Chicken infused with the most beautiful herbs/spices. It was so nice to eat food that wasn't basic and boring. I would recommend that you order a few different dishes and share them as you will want to try as many things as you can. A great variety of food at a reasonable price. This has been a fave for ages - however in recent times they have transformed themselves form a bit of a grungy cafe serving eclectic food and drinks to a more polished cafe and restaurant. Gone are all the inside tables in favour of a new bar and soon an upstairs restaurant. Much more roomy as a result, I must say. Some of that is a little unfortunate, as they no longer have the funky fresh squeezed juice combinations of old, or the za'atar toasted pita bread with unreal babaganouj and hummus. However, the food here is still really good, and the mint tea in funky glasses excellent. Haven't had a bad eat here, ever. read more

Cafe Mint - you're on Yelp! Finally! I feel like every time I've eaten at Mint, which is often, I always think about how I should write a review about it before never being able to find it on Yelp. And this was obviously also during the time that I didn't know I could add listings. Anyway. Mint. It's probably Mint that makes me like Sydney. I've been known to have breakfast, lunch and dinner meetings at Mint all in the one day. It was actually unintentional, but certainly no regrets. I usually sit right at the bar (where the baristas are) and read the paper as I sip my coffee and wait for my Turkish breakfast to arrive. Nice little space on crown st, mix of North Africa & Turkish & Middle East meeting of the minds. And yes, it works. Bouncing back from being sick, I was very pedestrian and settled for the eggs on toast. What I wanted was any number of things that mentioned exotic flavour & spice combinations that could easily be enjoyed for lunch or dinner as well as brekkie! The slow cooked lamb, ($15.90), mince was amazing! Looking at the specials board and lunch menu makes me think I'll be back to give it a go! Roast garlic & potato ravioli w/duck Ragu ($27.50), just might be worth the price! Not a bad start to the day! They could use a bit of work on the coffee but it wasn't a deal breaker! Very trendy little cafe to pass the time away in. I stopped by for a glass of wine, great wine list by the way. But they are licensed to only serve wine with food. I wasn't in the mood for food, so I just had a soft drink. The bar is very open air, and is like being in a log cabin. There were people with laptops out and tables for one were fine. The bar men seemed very switched on and could have actually been the owner. This would be a nice bar to have a date at, it is cosy, could be romantic at night and has some nice menu options. Surfing the city for cafes with WiFi we came across Café Mint in Surry Hills. We arrived a little later in the afternoon (they close the café at 3pm and reopen in the evenings for dinner) so we quickly sat down at a comfortable table towards the rear of the café. After ordering our coffee the waiter gave us the WiFi password and we were able to start working. After a little while I started to get hungry smelling the scent of food coming from the kitchen. A brief look at the menu and I ordered the lamb & pinenut triangles, the spinach & fetta filo triangles and a savory muffin (ok, when I said a little hungry, I meant I was hungry and didn't want to seem like I was ordering a meal, just an afternoon snack). The food was delicious. Both the lamb and spinach filo triangles were light and flaky and the savory muffin was warm, freshly baked and scrumptious. O me o my, I ate too much. Luckily they were closing up so I wasn't tempted to order more. We'll be back to try dinner soon. If you go to the café during the day, make sure you try the fresh baked muffins (both a sweet and savory option). read more

The Baked Eggs with Chakchouka is hands down the best comfort-style food for a lazy weekend. It's even better when it's a cold morning and you're stuffing yourself with a hearty but not too heavy mixture of eggs in a thick onion, sweet capsicum and tomato sauce that goes down a treat with the Turkish bread toast. You can also get the baked eggs with beans and sucuk, a type of spicy sausage popular in the Middle East. This combo is a little spicier for my liking and I prefer the sweetness of Chakchouka - I swear any bad feelings just melt away when you're eating it, well for me anyway! It's a very small cafe with about two to three tables outside, but it's cute and intimate - great for a catch up with a friend or groups of about four. Amazing food! I have been here on two occasions and both times got the Set Menu 2. Wow! The most absolutely tasty food around! Living out in the western suburbs is no challenge to travelling in to enjoy this fantastic place! I really loved the flat bread, hummus and haloumi! read more
