This place gets a really mixed review. I've been going to the one in the Castro in SF for a long time and the coffee has always been top notch. I was, therefore, very surprised when my oat milk latte was extremely sour yesterday at the Hearst location. I went here yesterday for lunch and coffee. We ordered a salad, sandwich, kombucha, oat milk latte and an almond dirty chai. We ordered the espresso drinks to go because we were sitting outside and did not want them to get cold too quickly. The first thing that was wrong is that they did not give us to go cups. Not great but we were planning to drink them anyway. But my latte was super sour and inedible. And my BF's dirty chai tasted like water. I could not believe it. We returned the drinks immediately. We never demand anything or act rude as we feel it is up to the establishment to recognize an item has been returned and make things right. Unfortunately the staff didn't know what to do and just let it go. They offered to dump the existing terrible lattes into to go cups but that's it. They didn't offer to make new ones or refund us our money. That's terrible customer service folks! They also completely forgot about our kombucha and had to go back through all the orders to find it and confirm we paid for it. Also not great customer service. The food, however, is phenomenal! The staff in the kitchen is really working magic. Everything was fresh, interesting and delicious! Service: 1 Food: 5 Coffee: 1 Space and atmosphere: 5 I am really hoping they take this suggestion and improve their service and coffee. Hopefully they give their baristas more training on the espresso machine and how to pull a proper shot. Crunchy bowl with egg or chicken is to die for. One of my top go to lunches in the Bay Area. Healthy but filling and beyond delicious! The atmosphere of the cafe is great, mix of people catching up to people getting some work done. Noise level is medium, not too bad for work or socializing. Coffee and tea also hit the spot. Only down side to this place is the price, quite expensive, definitely a reminder that you're getting lunch in the Bay Area! read more

Pros: Sunny with lots of space and plenty of parking. Food is good and there's usually plenty of space if you need to work. No idea about the WiFi situation. Coffees are quite good. Lots of outdoor seating. Slightly away from 4th street chaos but close enough to walk. Cons: pricey! And the coffees are relatively small. Not a big selection of pastries, but again there's the full menu. Milk and two milk alternatives (oat and almond). No soy. read more

Im lactose intolerant so I agreed to it... but grudgingly. - Acai bowl was overly sweet. I also think they scoop the acai out of a container and serve it?? Some spoons had uneven ice crystals like when you eat ice cream at home. For $14 after tax, id love a fresh acai bowl. Fruit on top was good though, very fresh. - Please figure out your music! I frequent this place once to twice a week and I've usually had a great time, friendly staff, great food and subpar espresso. This morning the two girls working were very passive aggressive and sarcastic with me while I ordered a breakfast sandwich. I preceded to think maybe it was just because I showed up pretty early.... or something.. I ordered an americano on my way out, it took them over five minutes to pull the espresso (they weren't dialing the espresso, they were just talking) still very passive aggressive and sassy and the barista preceded to SPILL the iced americano on me while serving it. It took them even longer to remake the drink after spilling it. I will not be going back. Not welcoming or inviting. Food is great, though! read more

I was very excited for this place to open. It is just a block from my apartment. There are really good coffee shops in 4th st and two amazing breakfast restaurants. This is one of my favorite breakfast and lunch spots. Nice casual spot with good coffee and lots of nice healthy food. It can be a bit pricey but that's just the Berkeley price point for food these days. Plus I usually have enough food to take with me as a second meal. There's a nice big patio that always has seating and is dog friendly. Definitely recommend this place and hope people aren't deterred by some of the low ratings here. read more

This place is an amazing breakfast / brunch place in Berkeley. The outdoor sitting area is quaint and comfortable. My fiancé and I both had a basic breakfast consisting of over medium eggs , potatoes and toasted bread. There was this pesto type sauce which was served on the side which was awesome. Been to the San Francisco location and was happy to see a location pop up here. The decor is very pretty but the latte art was ugly. My latte heart looked deformed, I mean for the price I'm paying I was hoping it would be insta worthy. I prefer the SF location. This is SF quality food. Hope they stay in business here in Berkeley where the clientele is down for lower quality food at lower prices. The squash bowl is superb. It is vegetarian (with sunny side up egg perfectly runny) yet so fulfilling in many levels (taste, look, smell, color). The beef banh mi too is just delish, beef perfectly roasted on crusty bread. I went into this place because the interior and exterior of the café caught my attention. Everything is very aesthetic and clean. I ordered the chai because I am a huge fan of a delicious chai latte. However, the chai was a huge disappointment because it tasted very washed out. It had the chai taste but it was very bland. (I would personally not pay $4 for it). I told the cashier/barista and s/he was very accommodating and remade it for me by adding vanilla and more of the chai mix. I'm giving this place 2 stars instead of 1 because of the accommodating service. Also, the barista said that the s/he did not taste the drinks so s/he did not know my concern with the chai. I believe everyone who works at the café should get the opportunity to try the drinks and foods, so they are informed of what they are selling to their customers! I had an excellent experience at Cafe Reveille. I came here for a quick breakfast date with my husband while my mom watched our son. The staff was very nice and the food was delicious. We had a perfect croissant (flaky/crunchy on the outside and chewy/buttery delicious on the inside) and a piece of fancy toast with egg salad. We also had a pot of herbal tea which was delightful. The cafe is on the expensive side and you should expect that. The decor, food, service, and location are the reason why. It is no different in pricing that say Bartavelle over on San Pablo (in fact I think their toast may be a dollar cheaper). I'm super excited to have these guys near 4th street, and plan to visit for Mother's Day. read more

If you're looking for a Instagram-worthy cafe for brunch this weekend, this is your spot. Everything about this place screams "TAKE PICTURES OF ME NOW!", from the pale pink metal chairs, marble table tops, open air interior; not to mention the beautiful food. I was dying to try the Shakshuka, but missed the breakfast menu, so I opted for the acai bowl (I'm almost always gluten free, and this was one of the few options) instead. While snap-shot worthy, the dish itself didn't entirely live up to its beauty. The fruit and toppings were great, but my acai blend was partially frozen for a good chunk of the center, so I presume they either don't make it from scratch or thaw it before they serve it, instead of blending it to order. The pastries in the case looked yummy and are ordered from an unrelated bakery whose name I can't recall. My friend ordered a vanilla iced coffee, but said it was only okay. If throwing a Poached egg on every dish considers it breakfast, you can kill me now. This place is a damn lie which is why I went with the usual safe route of ordering a burger. Boy did I f@&k up! Not only being a soggy mess, it was one of the most overcooked generic Safeway ingredient burgers I ever had. Don't get me started about the pickles or literally every shitty ingredient they put on there because I will go bad 10 times over. On top of that "yes there's more" it cost 15 gotdamn dollars, give me In-N-Out Burger every day before you let me even look at this place ever again. Love this place! Opened about a month ago and I've been going every weekend. Coffee is by far and away the best you'll get in the area. The menu has the right amount of options so there's something for everyone, but you don't feel overwhelmed. Every meal I've had the plates have looked beautiful and tasted incredible. The space is by Fourth St, spacious and and an awesome place to sit down and relax whether inside of on the patio. The cafe is absolutely adorable and the staff blend right in with the hip atmosphere, but the coffee and food are not great. I had an iced espresso drink, and somehow there were coffee grounds in the bottom. I'm not sure how you can manage that other than perhaps taking the espresso basket with the porta-filter off at a bad angle and dropping grounds into the shot. The veggie soup was very watery and lacking in flavor other than a lot of cumin and it was super salty. And to boot there is no WIFI. Perhaps this is a strategy to keep people from lingering for long, but it's very odd for a Bay Area cafe. If only the coffee and food were as spot on as the style. read more
