When I travel out to Utah and stay in Tooele for work, I make it a point to stop at Cafe Rio. I've been doing this since 2013. The food has always been hot and fresh! I got the bowl the other day with grilled chicken and added carne asada. Excellent!! The service was good, but must admit that it used to be better. The staff seem to just be there doing their job with little interaction with the customers. They had a few people standing around the counter and not once did a staff member ask if they could help one of them. The customer had to get their attention. The restaurant is laid out well and very causal. It was clean and welcoming. I'll keep coming back because I love the food!! read more

We ordered a salad that had black and slimy cilantro. Who would put that on a customer's food? Someone that doesn't care! The quesadilla's tortilla tasted old, and in the tin togo box there was about a quarter cup of water, I assume it was from the lettuce the must have been served with a ladle. I called and complained. Sadly this was my top go-to places, but the past 5 times I've been here I've noticed the food isn't as good as it used to be, everything looks rushed and just slapped together, the workers aren't very happy, the dining area is always clean and well stocked. Usually I love their food and take out service. Today after eating a pork burrito I have been sick all day. My wife didn't get sick so I assume they mixed some chicken or chicken broth into the burrito or the sauce. That is the only thing that makes me this sick. Restaurants need to understand food allergies. I order only certain things because of my chicken allergies. There is no reason for sloppy work areas or cross mixing meats in a restaurant. I came here because my wife was having pregnancy cravings. The staff was super slow. There were six people there. One person sorta kinda made our food while the other five watched. After waiting until I gave up they finally took my order. Then the food was presented to me as a dried out super old gross chicken with two tiny scoops of guacamole and sour cream. I spent the next ten minutes making jokes about blindfolding my twelve year old and asking her to recreate this monstrosity. The manager lady just said she can help me because it wasn't in the system. She claimed I hadn't paid because it wasn't in the system. Called my bank in the car and the purchase was approved and pending. When I told the manager lady this. She still refused to make my order or give me a refund. Just said she wouldn't help me. Acted all put out by having to talk to me. I always have problems here with my food being wrong or items just missing. It's too expensive to be messing up orders all the time or flat out taking people's money and not feeding them. I had to dispute the charge with my bank because Cafe Rio Tooele can get their shit together. HAPPY THAT THERE ARE OTHER MEXICAN RESTARUANTS IN TOOELE NOW. NEVER AGAIN CAFE RIO. I am very disappointed in this Cafe Rio out in Tooele. I try to never complain too much about places, however this place continues to disappoint me. First off, I should have never went to the drive thru at this location last night. I ordered two chicken enchiladas (hot sauce) with extra rice and a pork salad (not a very complicated order). The drive thru had one car in front of me, which took some time to get their food. I pulled up to the window and immediately the cashier asked if I had paid already (he watched me just pull up seconds earlier). He handed me my bag of food (should have checked it there). I get home to find two sweet pork burritos with no rice or beans and a pork salad with no rice or beans. I also was not given a receipt. Unfortunately, this place has messed up my drive thru order before. I tried to eat the sweet pork burritos they messed up and gave me. They weren't even wrapped and they looked like they were pulled out of a garbage can. I would recommend not going to this location or if you do, I would recommend going in to order so you can see them make your food. They need to do away with the drive thru. My family and I can't go back. On a positive note, I have never had a bad experience at any of the locations outside of Tooele. read more

Coconut Shrimp Tacos were soggy, as in the Coconut Shrimp itself was mushy instead of crispy. They also loaded them full of pico, which doesn't go on it & did not include any cilantro or lime slices. This is my wife's all time favorite places to eat, but unfortunately this is just one thing we disagree on. I have been to a Cafe Rio just about every time I make a trip to Utah (which is twice a year about) and several times during the trip for my wife's sake haha. I have to agree with other reviews posted here that the food and service is hit or miss. I just don't really see what the appeal is and I've never had a real memorable experience which my taste buds would agree with. I have been when the lemonade dispenser is broken and leaking out all over the ground and when the restaurant itself is pretty dirty. I guess I've never really had an experience when I leave completely dissatisfied, but I definitely leave feeling that it should have been better than it was. If you're in Utah (because they don't have one in the Sacramento area) area I would give it a shot and it might be right up your alley. If you don't go to Utah you can try the Sacramento version which is Costa Vida (haven't been there yet). read more

I am never disappointed with Cafe Rio. Their food is divine. I love their homemade tortillas. I could have plain cheese quesadilla with their tortillas every day of my life and never be sick of it. We got a to go order and it was scrumptious. It was ready when we arrived and still hot when we got home. The tomatillo dressing I want to douse my entire life in. Or doesn't get any better than that stuff. This was our first time attending the Tooele location and didn't experience any of the problems all the other negative reviews had. This was my first visit to this fine establishment and it won't be the last! I had a rough day after waking up in a bad mood this morning and my boss yelling at me all day for mishandling power tools and delivering materials to the wrong place and being humiliated by co-workers, gas station attendants and my sister, I just needed a taco. As I drove down the street Cafe Rio seemed to call me in from a block away. I ordered the sweet pork taco and it was delicious! I went back for another... And another when I had a memorable experience. I was carrying my tray back to my seat and I slipped on some horchata I had spilled earlier and dropped my food. I knelt down to scoop it up and slipped again and found myself in a greasy heap nearly in tears on the floor. Just then I felt a tap on my shoulder. "Excuse me me sir, can I help," said one of the most kind young men I've ever met helped me up. After providing me with the necessary napkins, sponges and towels I was able to finish the new taco he hand delivered. If you get a chance to go in, get the pork taco, drink the Horchata and thank this great employee. I believe his name was Bridger. This place made a single-worker Subway look like a well oiled machine. Let me preface this: I never write bad reviews. I never have, until now. A few weeks ago I finally convinced my boyfriend to eat at Cafe Rio. He thought they were terrible, so I couldn't convince him to eat there for our entire relationship until then. So I went and picked up the food. The kitchen was a DISASTER. The rice was undercooked. And some of the lettuce and cilantro in my salad was brown and going bad. A bunch of the staff was also standing around at the register bad mouthing previous customers. My boyfriend called and complained and we got 2 free meal tickets. I went in to use one of those tickets tonight. (I had already used one for this same thing I was ordering, at the same location, as we had 2 and my boyfriend didn't want anything from Cafe Rio again.) All I wanted was their chips and queso. It's five dollars, and some change for that particular menu item. The coupon also comes with a drink. So $8 and change, all together. I stood in line for about 25 minutes WAITING for this, with my three year old who I was having to hold the entire time while I was thrashing and whining, because he was having a melt down. I finally get to the register and present my coupon. The cashier says she can't use it cause it's an "appetizer not a meal". I tell her I literally just used it a few days ago for the same thing, that the afternoon people had let me. She continues to argue with me and ask me who told me that. I tell her that it seemed like a manager, cause everyone else was asking him for help. This goes on for another five minutes and it's a long line, so I move to the side and wait- and ask them to ring up the people behind me. The manager (the same one I complained about for trash talking customers at the register!!!) comes out and says I can't use the coupon on this cause it's an "appetizer not a meal." Their normal meals are easily over $12 when you get a drink with them, and I was practically begging for something way cheaper. She continued to just stare at me and repeat to me that the ticket said "meal, not appetizer." Eventually the woman in line behind me (still waiting to be served after I said I would wait until she was done, so she could go sit with her family) ends up PAYING for my damn chips and queso just so your manager will stop arguing with me. Tl;dr: your evening manager is an idiot with NO business sense and NO customer service skills. I wouldn't even take a free meal ticket after this abhorrent service. No amount of free queso or cilantro ranch will bring me back to this disgusting establishment. read more

This is easily the worst Café Rio I've ever been to. My experience was closer to Taco Bell than any other Café Rio. The staff wasn't just passive, they were actually rude and unhelpful. We walked in and were not greeted by anyone when we made our way up the line. The place was dead on a Monday night, which is rare for Utah, but still we waited a long time for anyone to start and help us. The girl working the first part of the line was messing with some gloves and just sort of pretending to be busy for as long as possible before she HAD to help us. I asked what meat was in the Chili Rellenos (which was the daily special) and she said "We don't make there here, and also I don't know what's in it" I said, "Isnt it the daily special" and she snapped "We don't have it!" The food already just from here all looked sub par compared to other locations. All of the tortillas were way overcooked to the point of all being blackened and were much thinner looking than other stores, the grilled chicken and steak all looked way charred to a crisp and dry, and all of the other meats looked dry and un-refreshed/replaced through the day. I ordered 1 pork and 1 chili beef enchilada, 2 nino quesadillas for the kids and my wife got shredded chicken tacos. Every bit of the food was significantly different and sub par as compared to any café rio we have been to, even the tortillas didn't quite taste the same, and were not as good. All of my meat was dry and did not taste fresh, and my wifes chicken was mushy and unappetizing. The house dressing we got on the side did not taste the same, more like a ranch dressing flavor, but also it was room temp warm, and unpleasant in that way. The beans were pretty good, we had both pinto and black on the sides, but the rice was all dried out and a bit crunchy. Again on the service, each of the 3 girls we spoke to were beyond just being passive, they were all annoyed we dare come to their place of business and bother them with our patronage, and each met us with annoyed stares, and snappy responses. The cashier rang up what we had and offered the total before asking if we wanted drinks and gave an annoyed sigh when I asked for drinks to be added to the order, and again when I asked whether they still offered stamp cards. On top of all of this the store was messy and dirty inside. Most of the tables were not cleaned off from previous guests, which is disconcerting considering it was pretty dead in there. The drink/utensil area was messy and un-replenished, with the floor around being all sticky. At 5:30 on a Monday they were out of 2 of the specialty drinks, and there were only a few napkins available. Both bathrooms were very messy and completely out of toilet paper. This place was JUST remodeled, how did it even get this messy in here, and how do the people who work here have such low pride in their workplace? There is little to no chance I will ever go back to this Café Rio location again, and this has even partially ruined all café rio for me. If they are expanding like this, and loosing the quality and care that made them what they are is this a sign of things to come from all Café Rio locations? read more

First time ordering at this location. We went because of the good reviews and word of mouth. So I picked up the order... Did not look appetizing at all. So I told my husband to try the food because so many people like the food. He said the nachos was great even though it didn't look good. He ordered burrito and it looked more like mini taco's.
