With about a half hour to kill between the…read morepoint we had to drop our daughter off for school and then be back in time to see her play, we didn't have too many options, and as a result called in here. I've seen the sign out on the main road (which would be easy to miss) every day as it's on my commute to work and yet I've never been in. So this worked out well. What a great hidden gem, loved this place. If you're looking for it, it is opposite the attendant-less Maxol garage, down the side of the used car place. The décor has all the hallmarks of a trendy contemporary coffee shop/deli, nothing too original, but to their credit they have distilled the design to the best elements of it and then executed the layout very well, so it's a nice place to be. The staff were great too which I love as there is little to endear a place to me more quickly than nice people working there who are nice, not through customer training but because they are just good folks!! The food when was great, a wide range of mouth-watering choices are clearly displayed across the huge menu..... which is the entire back wall of the place. It has been painted in blackboard paint and the menu chalked up in big clear writing. The prices although on the higher end of average aren't extortionate by any means so I wouldn't call it cheap eats but you get top quality food and service for just north of average price. The coffee was great, which is an essential element for me and the last thing I ate was a scone..... as we were there so early, it was freshly backed and still warm from the oven......................... so so good!

The Sunday menu had a great selection with 2 courses £18.99 which was worth it. I had the fresh cod with crab risotto and the desert of sticky toffee pudding with their homemade ice cream and left very satisfied. Staff were prompt, food was well presented and tasted good and overall the venue was nicely decorated with live music being played. Would recommend if you fancy an escape from Belfast!

I have eaten at it's sister restaurants, Balloo House and The Parsons Nose and loved both so I was happy to complete the hat-trick! The opportunity presented itself with a family double celebration, a 30th wedding anniversary and a birthday. Two great reasons to book a table. The restaurant is based in Lisbane in what used to be Lisbarnet House and is really quaint with quirky interiors. The staff are friendly and helpful, quickly offering to stash the surprise cake that I had brought along. We were presented with two menus, one for Sunday lunch and one for the weekend brunch options, both offering plenty of choice. Regular readers will know that I am a big fan of splitting starters when I cant decide so my first mission was to get someone to agree to share. Mission accomplished, we chose to share the Chicken liver parfait with rhubarb chutney & sourdough bread and the Goat's cheese crostini with candied walnuts & honey. The goat's cheese and rhubarb combination worked really well but for me, the winning choice was the smooth, creamy flavoursome pate- delicious. For my main, I played safe and chose the roast beef- always a good choice for Sunday lunch. A huge portion of beef appeared in front of me along with a sizable Yorkshire pudding and plenty of roasties. A variety of vegetables came on the side. While this was delicious, I will admit that the quantity on the plate defeated me. Another popular choice at the table was the shellfish linguine, prawns, crab, cockles and chorizo cream- jam packed with flavours. While I was too full to order a pudding, I managed to procure a spoon to sneak a taste of both the selection of icecreams and the Buttermilk Panna Cotta, strawberries and cookie crumble- delicious! If you are looking for a great quality Sunday lunch with fabulous food and a great location, look no further. Give the Poacher's Pocket a try!

Vegetarian café with great food and ambiance (4.5/5 Green Stars)…read more We stopped here en route to Carlingford on a friend's recommendation and all three of us were very happy we did. The place is lovely - the café is filled with light and plants and the surroundings are beautiful. Mum is a picky eater but she relished the mushroom quiche and finished the entire piece even though it was huge! (Seriously - about three times the size of portions elsewhere.) My brother loved his herbed rice bowl and I liked the organic porridge with fruit and the pistachio plum cake. The only kink was that several items arrived much later than the food - the coffees, bread, and honey for my porridge (I had already finished my porridge by then). The store is filled with great stuff - fresh fruit and veg, and a good selection of some of the most ethical products. Weirdly, the Strandfield website contains no info other than an address, so you have to rely on reviews to get info in advance. The lunch menu is mostly comprised of sourdough pizza, salads (including a quinoa bowl and herbed rice bowl), and sandwiches - see menu photo. There are also lots of bakery items, including freshly baked scones, cakes and wheaten bread (which was really good - I bought one to take home). I'm giving Strandfield café 4.5 out of 5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, for these reasons: · I didn't actually notice at the time but the menu is 100% vegetarian! · Strandfield uses free range eggs from their own farm. · My porridge was made with organic oats · Flowers and plants in the café come from Stranfield's own nursery · The grocer sources local and organic fruits and vegetables along free range eggs, and organic health foods · The store stocks a really good selection of ethical goods - I could do most of my shopping here if I lived here. · Strandfield would benefit from providing more info (on the website or menu) on ingredient sourcing.

Has an old world charm about it mixed with modern touches with vintage fireplaces, bare stone walls as well as trendy lighting and beautiful canvasses on the walls The food was lush! The menu is quite small as it caters for the breakfast/lunch crowd...but had a good selection of sandwiches, salads, lite bites and homemade pastries like sausage rolls & buns The best thing though, has to be that this place is in collaboration with Stepping Stones NI, which allows training for adults with a learning disability or difficulty, helping them gain employment and life skills. Profits from this place go to help Stepping Stones NI regenerate their funds and provide ongoing support for adults who need it. What a fab place, with a brilliant ethos and a fantastic atmosphere, food & staff! We'll be back down in Newtonards in the near future, and will defo be making another visit!

Now I know this building well as it is the actual Gatelodge for Ards hospital and years ago it used to be the accommodation for the junior doctors who worked there. It has been beautifully renevated maintaining the charm and character of the old gatelodge while blending in a new building. It is run by a charitable organisation who helps support people in the work place with learning disabilities , so all the profits go back into supporting this project . Inside the building there has been a great deal of thought put into making use of every area and it is so well laid out even incorporating an outdoor seating area. There is a variety of seating , ranging from tables for two to sofa seating for bigger groups. The service is excellent ordering at your table or at the counter and it being brought to you.The menu ranges from breakfast to tea with quite a wide choice of good quality food. I sampled a cappuccino and cherry scone both of which were moreish! All in all my experience of The Gatelodge was not only a trip down memory lane but also a pleasant relaxing cuppa in tasteful surroundings and I definitely will be back again and I won't need a hospital appointment as an excuse to do so!
