This is an ok place for breakfast. They have a vegan and vegetarian option which is great but food is very plain and not very flavorful to my taste. Café Rouge is a French bistro in the Covent Garden area across the street from the London Film Museum (AKA James Bond Museum). It was a perfect location for us to grab a quick lunch before catching up with 007. What we thought was going to be a quick bite surprisingly turned into a delightful lunch. PANIER DE CHAMPIGNONS: Literally translated as "mushroom basket", this appetizer was a tart like pastry with a buttery and flaky shell that was filled with sautéed mushroom slices and topped with a yummy mushroom and garlic sauce. You can't ask for anything better! TERRINE DE POULET: This app was a cold pâté made with coarsely chopped smoked chicken meat and was served with a slightly sweet raisin chutney on the side that complemented the flavor of the terrine very well. PORC SCHNITZEL: It was a breaded pork filet fried to a perfect golden brown on the outside while retaining the juiciness inside. I thought the filet was a bit too thick to fit the definition of a "schnitzel" which is usually rather thin. But the meat was tender and flavorful so all is good. MINUTE RUMP: It was a very tender steak cooked medium rare just as I ordered and served with a side of drawn garlic butter that was the steak's best friend. (The butter in Europe is just so rich and so amazing that the butter itself enhances the flavor of almost every dish.) The fries that came with both entrees were perfectly French and tasted just like those from the streets of Paris. What made a delightful lunch even better was the price tag. They were running a summer prix fixe special of GBP12.95 (approximately USD18) for an app + an entrée. For food this good, this was literally a steal! read more

Food is of the norm and average here! Their duck confit was done well and I like their jam that they had with it. Burger was mediocre. Not too over the top or done down under! Service and ambiance was the catchy part. After a long walk around exploring the main sites in London, the waitress kept coming around with refilling our pitcher of water and there were plugs around us to charge our GPS phones! Café Rouge is a hugely popular French brasserie-style restaurant franchise with something like 30 outlets in London alone, this Covent Garden branch on Wellington Street included. There are an astonishing 120 branches across the UK. Its uniformed interior is stereotypically French with parquet flooring and quaint seating booths adding to the traditional Parisian bistro look I think the designers were going for. It's an environment easy to get comfortable and feel at home in. The Café Rouge menu is a collection of French classics from croques to steak frites and moules. Of course, there is something for vegetarians, pescatarians and even hard-core vegans. We were a group of eight but only ended up ordering three different things (basically everyone ordered the same thing). This is interesting; the moms ordered the Poulet Breton, the dads (me included) ordered the Beef Bourguignon and the 'kids' (aged 17 to 24) all ordered steak - surreal. The starters were a lot more diverse with Breaded Camembert (me), Garlic Mushrooms, Pea & Mint Tortellini, and Onion Soup all being ordered, the Garlic Mushrooms times three. Don't expect Brasserie Zédel or Côte Brasserie levels of authenticity or quality and you should enjoy what you are served irrespective of what you order. Café Rouge does everything well but does not excel at any one thing. At least none of the things we ordered. The kids did not enjoy their steaks, feeling they were overcooked - they were. The moms were not impressed with their chicken, also feeling they were overcooked. They were a little dry. The dads, however, thoroughly enjoyed their wine braised beef. For me, the best part of Café Rouge was the service. We were looked after by a wonderfully hospitable waitress whose name, going by the bill, was Jolanta. She started by making us feel at home, brought us our drinks then helped us order our food. Throughout our meal, she visited our table checking on us regularly. The food was okay but not something I would return for, not even the Beef Bourguignon which both us dads liked. So, if you fancy a good French meal in the Covent Garden area, I recommend you try Balthazar on Russell Street. It's a little pricier but in a different league altogether. Hey! The salmon was delicious, served with potatoes and asparagus ... the sauce was amazing!! Really close to the Duchess Theater (and others), so it's a great place for dinner after a great play! Delicious dessert choices - my Fondant Chocolat and my husband's chocolate ice cream were both worth the calories! read more

I went here in June on a school trip when we got their we sat down and realized the glasses look musty but sometimes glasses get stained like that so we brushed it off but decided to use the napkins to wipe inside the glass the napkin turned out with a brown stain on it we were disgusted so we decided to go to the toilet and our teachers let two at a time me and my freind went first I didn't go to the toilet I just stood there while she went into a stall tje toilets were in the basement and were dark they had decent soaps in holders but one was missing and in replacement there was carex shoved in there and the flush buttons on the back of the toilet you could clearly see were filthy worse than I've ever seen before and when my freind washed her hands a chunk of black came out of the water and we were disgusted so we went back upstairs to our table they gave a large glass of water for the table which was quite a long table with about 10 people each side and the water tasted kind of gross not like normal water and I'm a big water drinker I had ordered sausage and mash and it was questionable the sausage was ok but the mash was disgusting and there was beans in the Mash that I wasn't told about for desert most people got ice cream and it showed up quickly but was very melted when the got it it was like yogurt I got it ten minutes later along with another person and it was good but still other peoples ice cream was disgusting they had massive gold mirrors that I think hadnt been cleaned for about 20 years so I touched it and there was a lot of dust on my hand and my finger was black we also watched a man get shoved out of the kitchen and get shouted at them he stormed out and walked across the street and didn't come back he was the one who gave out the ice cream there was a massive window four times the size of me I'm 5 foot I was 4 foot somthing at the time it was wide open it was the summer so fair enough but it could let insects in so it could have been just open a bit anyway I was disgusted i don't know how people like this place read more

Aldwych is a great location for the theatre. On the outskirts of Convent Garden square the restaurants and cafes are in abundance. I often meet my Mum here for a quick bite to eat after work. However I most recently ate here before the theatre. We entered the restaurant on the principal that we needed to be at the theatre in less than an hour and would this be enough time to have a meal and a glass of wine. It's not that I like to rush a meal but we had unfortunately got caught in traffic so were running a little over schedule. They were most pleasant and re-assured us that each meal is made freshly but we would have it within 15 minutes and we did! I ordered a delicious piece of salmon with pesto and salad and my friend ordered a very tasty looking feta tart which she thoroughly enjoyed. The food is always such good quality whether I order a salad, seafood or steak. The perfect little cafe to go with friends. Even though it is a chain there is something personal about each individual restaurant. The decor is very French with posters and paintings symbolic of French style. The tables have red and white table cloths and Kane chairs and there is even an outdoor seated area in the summer! read more

Yet another cafe rouge. Except this one is BU-SY! I often meet friends on weeknights around 6pm, and this place, despite not being at the top of our list regarding food, was so packed, he would have had to wait 25min for a seat! I'm not sure they even take reservations... Other than that, service is decent, food good, wine selection good too, and the desserts are nice. Chocolate pot is my favourite. And you can never go wrong with a steak frites. Just try to get there well before you want to eat, as tables disappear in seconds after work!! read more

Having been to Cafe Rouge a few times, I thought I knew what to expect. Unfortunately, this branch didn't deliver even the dull but fine experience I was expecting. Sloppy service led to our steak and salads having the chips instead. Then sloppy cooking led to those salads been dull and, honestly, not as good as something I could knock up in 5 minutes at home. I'm not sure what it was that was sloppy that led to our bill being wrong and me being charged for a sirloin rather than a minute steak but it was a tad frustrating. I certainly asked for the 'same again' and didn't notice any difference in my medium rare (more like well done actually) steak (though, honestly, I probably wouldn't have). Our original waiter rudely argued that we were in the wrong but to the restaurant's credit, it was amended quickly without fuss. With a voucher it was a great deal, but overall not a good experience. read more

Cafe Rouge has such a lovely after work environment, in the evening it is packed with people enjoying dinner and a catch up with friends. The place buzzes with conversations and this makes the atmosphere really relaxed. It is also really nice for people watching. The staff are very friendly and never rush you, even though we weren't having desert we were told to stay as long as we wanted, we were able to finish our wine and conversation in peace. Food and wine were served very quickly and efficiently and were both good and good value. I would definitely return. read more

We ate here with our two kids, then aged 3 and 5, about six months ago. The first thing that struck us about the restaurant is that it wasn't big, and it felt rather cramped. It was quite a performance to squeeze past everyone else to get down to the loos, for instance. The second thing is that it was quite busy. Admittedly we probably should have expected that late on a Wednesday afternoon in the summer but it did make things a little bit more pressured. The service was OK, but when you've got two hungry kids we could have done with it being a little bit faster. However, everything else was very good. The staff were friendly and helpful enough, even if they didn't have the time to make it an extra special occasion. The menu was good and the kids' activities they provided weren't too bad either. The food was tasty and certainly lived up to our expectations; and the bill was quite reasonable too (we had a voucher which made it slightly cheaper). So all in all, not a bad place to eat -- we would go there again. read more

Very good value, as already sensibly priced and we had booked with a special offer voucher. Friendly staff, if a little distracted. Main problem was finding something on the menu that I liked/would not trigger an allergic reaction. They had run out of lemon sole, which would have been my first choice and refused to serve the burger as it was part of a set menu. The other non steak choices were mussels or bouillabaisse containing mussels but in the end they agreed to let me have hot vegetables instead of salad with the grilled salmon. My friend's steak arrived very undercooked, though she had ordered medium. It took so long for them to recook, the rest of us had nearly finished by the time her main course came back. Cafe "Rude" is just that, French bistro food with the Parisian "attitude". Food is okay, relatively simple predictable menu. Service is subpar -- inattentive and surly. They get three stars for food primarily. Solid chicken on a baguette, good fries. Skip the salad, it was wilted and lacked dressing. When I asked for some the waitress said "French or olive oil"? No vinegar, ugh! The baguette was soft; should have been crunchy. Chicken a bit sparse too. Okay if you are in a rush but not worth going out of your way to eat there. read more

Yesterday evening we had celebrated our annual Christmas Party at Cafe Rouge at The Strand on the Green in Chiswick with a party of 10. The service was superb, Istvan served our table with precision, humour, and attention, which made our whole dining experience very very enjoyable. While strolling through the area, catching up with an old friend, we stumbled upon Cafe Rouge and decided to give it a try. I mean, literally stumbled. I fell on the pavement and needed a place to sit for a bit. It was 11:30am on a Thursday, and there was only one other table occupied. Two eggs benedict with smoked salmon, an Americano and a cafe au lait, a lemonade and a bottle of still water were ordered. Everything was absolutely wonderful and the service was perfect. We ate our meal and sat for two hours, relaxing and chatting...never made to feel rushed and checked up on just enough to show they cared, but not so much that they were pushy. I was not expecting too much. Me and my friends just wanted a quick coffee and a French-style dessert in the Covent Garden area. To my disappointment however, it was too much to ask. They served me the worst creme brûlée I have ever had. The creme was terribly cold and the burned caramel on the top was not even well burned, i.e. the crusty layer was not crusty at all. Honestly, you can find a better creme brûlée in Sainsbury's or Tesco and it will be a lot cheaper. Avoid at all cost. read more

Arrived here for a pre theatre meal. The waitress was not concentrating so took several attempts to order our wine and food. The starter we shared was saucissons which was what it was, they couldn't do much with it. My main was ribeye, I asked for it blue, which is a bit brave with such a marbled cut. Well, it was awful, very grisly, and fatty. Ribeye shouldn't be grisly. I had the beef dripping merlot sauce, which was cold. For desert I had creme brûlée which was ok, with raspberry sorbet. The waiter was very nice and attentive. They were manically busy. I won't go back there. Not VFM. read more

Went here last night. The girl serving us was uninterested and seemed a little clueless. A glass of wine came to us in a larger measure than we'd ordered, soup of the say was brought to us completely different to the soup of he say shed told us was soup of the day, the ham and cheese pastry starter had no ham in it. My friends main course came long long after mine. We also asked three times for just a glass of tap water before somebody else saw us looking for someone and asked us of there's anything we needed. I remember the Cafe rouge near Leicester Square tube being much better, so go there instead if you'd like cafe rouge specifically. read more
