I decided within a few hours to go to London with no particular plans in mind for my first time in the city, lucked out with a last minute reservation at this very popular cafe for an impromptu birthday afternoon tea. Unexpectedly stayed till close after an amazing time with the nicest waitress who moved me to their best table at start, helped clean off sweater lint off the only nice clothes I scrappily packed for the short notice trip, patiently took so many pics of me all around the cafe's most aesthetic corners fully indulging my basic, and taught me how to properly eat a scone instead of my original brutish ways. When the waitress came to take my card near end of service, I quietly showed her a note I'd written her on my phone (tldr expressed gratitude for her kindness and for making my birthday joyful amidst a gloomy holiday season, offered to do a few things and asked which would serve her the most meaning). After reading the note, the waitress gave me a big hug which I happily accepted, then surprised me with tears streaming down her face as she told me she was actually having a really rough day till this. After she collected herself a bit and closed out the remaining customers, we chatted more in a private section and resonated on our philosophies around how we treat people. Before parting, I encouraged the young waitress (Akanksha) to please retain her precious human qualities that the world always needs more of (indirectly reminding myself the same). You never know when somebody is going through a rough time. Or something. It boasts truly astounding menus: faux-leatherbound folios containing colour photocopies of pages which were clearly lovingly produced by someone in possession of a large pair of scissors; a stack of photographs of dishes which vaguely reflected at least the intention behind the cuisine they have to offer; and a true appreciation of the value of Word Art. There is a page at the front (usually) of the menu which basically lists all of the possible ingredients of a fried breakfast in every combination you can think of, except for the one you want. This means that if you ask for exactly what you would like, disregarding the menu, you have no idea either whether you will get anything resembling what you ordered, or what it will cost. Yay, mystery tour! So basicallyit's ace for a fried breakfast. I haven't sampled their other offerings (they do burgers and steaks and fish fingers, and they also do those milk+syrup milkshakes that taste of ash), but I dare say they are all equally artery-clogging, and also equally satisfying. The staff are friendly and helpful, particularly to ladies, who are almost always offered a lollipop on the way out. It is arguably not as cheap as one would expect, but I recommend just popping in for a cappuccino if you're on a budgetsurprisingly, and in all seriousness, they serve what I consider to be the best coffee in Hammersmith.

We still had to cover the service charge of about &10. Food was very good--savory sandwiches and sweet cakes served on a silver tower. We also had a pitcher of tap water, but we finished quickly due to the heat and we could not get our waitress to refill it. In fact she completely disappeared after taking our order. Other servers brought out our refreshments. It was a lot of food. It did not look like much when they brought it out, but we could not finish it. Just tried at least a bite of everything. Then it was a real struggle to get our bill. After 3 hours in the museum and an hour sitting in the heat, we just wanted to go back to our hotel. Finally flagged down the manager who sent someone else to verify our bar codes. There are restrooms available to the restaurant patrons that cannot be accessed by the general public. We discovered the Green Room Cafe in lovely Stoke Newington as we were ambling about looking for a place to have coffee. Keep that in mind for this review, I was looking for coffee. Outside it's a florist, with plants and flowers spilling out onto the sidewalk. I stopped to smell the roses, literally, and saw a sign advertising pancakes. My mother always says if you want something done right, do it yourself. Eventually we got menus. In the meantime, a waiter had come to the table and we asked for two coffees. Another waitress came back and we ordered breakfast and a burger. They have a whole host of breakfast dishes, pancakes, and benedicts on the menu. I ordered the veggie breakfast as I was feeling virtuous, my friend the chicken burger. And we waited. And waited. Eventually we prompted for our coffee, having already asked for it. The food came after a long wait. With no cutlery. Or coffee. I went in search of cutlery myself. Then asked for my coffee and some butter. We waited. No coffee. No butter.
