Bihun Goreng - was so excited to try it I didn't even take a picture before diving in

There's very limited Indo foods selections in AZ so I was SUPER excited when this restaurant was right by our hotel. There's a million places to eat in Amsterdam but I had to get the BF to try true Indonesian comfort foods before head back east later this year. It also helped that it was raining and I wanted another excuse to fill my cravings for warm food + the addition of the sambal heat. If you're in the area I highly recommend this family owned place!

Back in 2006, I was on a train ride to Amsterdam and I had the pleasure of sitting next to an old Dutch lady. It was my first time to Amsterdam, and I had asked her, "What do you recommend eating in Netherlands? Dutch food?" She told me, "No! Dutch food? Do you want to eat pickled herring?" I laughed, and she replied, "Indonesian food is the best food you can get in Netherlands, so be sure to try that!" Speed forward 3 years, to December 2009, during my last trip to Amsterdam (with fellow yelper Sigourney W.), it was my goal to eat Indonesian food. Since I don't really speak Dutch (I speak German), I relied on the internet to find restaurants and stumbled upon Sie-Joe, which was surprisingly good. At the time, the Euro to Dollar ratio sucked, so food was relatively expensive due to the conversion rate. We had split the (1) nasi goreng and (2) sate kambing, all of which was fairly well portioned and very tasty, as Indonesian food should taste. We had sat at the window counter table, so we got a view of passerbys as we ate our food. Each table in the restaurant had different Indo condiments, including chilis and a sweet soya sauce, which to this day, we have not been able to find one as sweet and yummy as the one back in Sie-Joe. The lamb satay was excellent--didn't have much of the usual "gamey" lamb aftertaste, and was prepared perfectly, such that the meat was not overcooked. The nasi goreng was also equally good, similar to the nasi gorengs I've had back in the states. Finding the restaurant proved to be a feat, since the streets in Netherlands are not very well marked by street names. But eventually we got there... as this restaurant, like most businesses in Amsterdam, are hidden/nestled between many other small businesses. Would I come back here next time in Amsterdam? YES. Tasty and one of the cheaper finds in Amsterdam for Ethnic food... hands-down YUM!!!!!!

Indonesian treats: Gado Gado with Krupuk shrimp crackers, Es Chendol and Nasi Putih (white rice).

One of the lesser known (by tourists) joys of Amsterdam is the wealth of Indonesian restaurants throughout the city. In fact, I would venture to say that outside Southeast Asia, you are unlikely to find more Indonesian cuisine. This is a legacy of the fact that Indonesia was a Dutch colony for hundreds of years, resulting in the people of the Netherlands developing a taste for the cuisine. Sie-Joe is a family affair run by a man who, he tells us, has been in The Netherlands for over thirty years as well as his wife and daughter. As my wife was from Indonesia, they were more than happy to chitchat and gave us many insights on the city. Among these is that virtually every Dutch inhabitant loves the cuisine. Now, to the food. Of the (limited) sampling of Indonesian restaurants in the area, this is the most authentic... if not precisely what you would get in Jakarta. The Gado-Gado was well executed, and the satay was tasty (and in fact used a more tender meat than the strictly authentic article). My wife's Bakmi Tek-Tek (a mix of soupy noodles with stir-fried veggies and chicken) was Ok, but probably not as good as the other items. Also, you can taste the backing-off of the spiciness to suit European tastes. The Es Chendol had good flavor, and correct, although it was a bit sweet for my taste with perhaps not enough ice to balance the syrup. Bottom line is good food, friendly service and run by a very nice family.

This is no fancy restaurant with rijstaffel buffet like other Indonesian places in Amsterdam, this is a simple restaurant that serves simple classic Indonesian food such as nasi goreng (fried rice), bakmi goreng (fried noodle), gado gado (mixed salad with peanut sauce), soto ayam (chicken soup) and so on. I ordered a nasi rames and had my chicken switched with sate kambing (lamb satay - because I don't eat poultry) and it tasted so good, just like my mom made it. I ordered a cendol drink as well, a traditional drink made from coconut milk and tapioca-like "bubbles" in it and both meal and drink tasted authentic. Don't come here in large groups as they might not have the room for it, but you can definitely drop by for lunch and have some good old fashioned Indonesian food like in "warung" (small food eateries by the street in Indonesia) back home in my country. Go for the nasi rames/campur if you want to sample most of the dishes, or if you know what you want, get the individual menu. The soto ayam (chicken soup) is tasty so I heard but the portion is quite small so you could probably have it as appetizer. PS: they have bapao snack as well! (Bapao is similar to Char Siu Bao, only halal) :P

Tiny cramped kitchen that you can easily see into when you sit at the counter

During my most recent trip to Amsterdam, I knew that I had wanted to get some Indonesian food, and this place seemed promising. The place is tiny and while I didn't have to wait to be seated as I was by myself, other parties had to wait a little bit before getting seated. I opted for their bamie tek tek fried noodle dish, which was not bad, but not amazing, either. Frankly, I was a little underwhelmed. At least there was plenty of sambal oelek for me to spoon onto my somewhat bland dish. Service was fine, albeit a bit curt. I'd say you can probably find better Indonesian in this city.

Below average Indonesian restaurant. Hostess was quite friendly but the overall good experience was lacking. Generally it was seasoned well but was nonetheless lacking in flavor. I noticed this small shop popular with a few locals that seemed to be regulars pre-cooks some food and reheats to order. That would explain why the chicken was dry.

Small, very badly ventilated, Indonesian restaurant. I simply did not like the food they serve which I got it with a grumpy attitude. You can see how they prepare the food as the kitchen is actually at middle of the place so you can soak into food smell.

I'm so glad that I dropped by Sie-Joe for lunch before heading to the airport. There are only about 5 tables and a few seats by the window, and it is pretty bare-bones cafeteria style. So not good for a fancy date or a group of friends. However I had no problem coming here to eat by myself. Going by Eva K.'s recommendation, I got the Nasi Rames (€ 9,75) and cendol (€ 3,75). The drink came out right away; refreshing and just sweet enough. If you like bubble tea, you will probably enjoy this with the flavourless 'noodles' at the bottom. Just remember to mix it up a bit first. Soon after, the generously-portioned main dish arrived along with a spoon and fork. The lady working behind the counter also came by with a fresh little dish of sambal for me, which was blazing hot! The chicken was lovely and tender, cooked on the bone. YUM. From the green beans to the salad, everything seemed a bit fresher to me than the other warungs I've visited in Amsterdam. Which would make sense since it is just a little more expensive. For me the salad was actually a little boring with red onion and cabbage but maybe it is just there for the cooling effect. Another sad part was that you only get half an egg, whereas at other warungs you get a whole one. These are small things I can overlook. Located so centrally, there is no excuse not to come try this place. I saw a lot of tourists coming by, looking at the menu, and walking away. Please just try it! The food is so good. (:

About food truck quality at slightly above food truck prices. If you are in the area AND have a case of the munchies AND want to skip Febo or fast food then this is a decent alternative, but this is not the place for a highly-quality Indonesian food experience.

Overall: 5 stars…read more When I searched where I could partake on the Indonesian Rice Table feast in Amsterdam, Sampurna came up with their intriguing Satay Solo course that has a small plates of everything. I love the concept because it offers so much insight into the cuisine without having to consume in such large volumes. That said, this "solo" rice table was still food that was more than 2 meals worth for me, but much better than 12 meals worth. Love the food and the flavors, and was impressed by how well everything was cooked and balanced each other. [ PART I ] Chicken Skewers - Classic chicken satay with peanut sauce that is tender and works well with that sweet and savory profile. Beef Skewers - Love these beef skewers that have a strong meatiness to the bite. Goat Skewers - Very intriguing, not too gamey meat with a relatively sweet profile that works. Nasi Goreng - Well flavored fried rice that stands on its own but tastes even better with the rice plate. Bami Goreng - Deliciously decadent noodles powered by the bacon. Daging Smoor - I love the flavor profile of this sweet braised beef; its tender, its strong in flavor, and goes so well on top of the bed of rice. [ PART II ] Jagung Kacang Panjang - light clean dish with delicious vegetables; great balance to the menu. Salat Manga - Flavorful and refreshing mango salad in a peanut dressing that has sweet and nutty profile; this dish is bold in flavor but also provides some relief to the other heavier flavors on the menu. Sambal Goreng Telor - The sambal gives such a bold flavor to moisten and flavor the boiled egg; this would taste even better if the egg were soft boiled. Acar Ketimun - Much needed component of the rice table that provides acidity and freshness to contrast all the bold flavors of the menu. Serundeng - Toasted coconut and peanut topping I sprinkled onto the noodles; adds a tropical twist to the dish. Emping - Nutcrackers that are even more crisp than the shrimp crackers. Gives a density and sharp textural component. Food: +1 Presentation: E Price: +1 Atmosphere: E Service: E Menu: +2 Insta/Yelp/Beli: @amei_eats Insta/TikTok: @ameizing.race

The inside of the restaurant was romantic with candlelit dining and elaborate decor. €30 per person can seem expensive but we were pleasantly surprised that it's truly €30 total. No tax or tip. Our tap water was also free. When we entered, the owner, Jerry informed us they're only doing rice table (no a la carte dining) and asked us if we want the regular or vegetarian meal. We chose regular. Jerry learned our names and addressed us by them for the rest of the evening. The regular rijsttafel came with chicken sate, soy chicken, beef rendang, curry chicken, veggies, spicy eggs, cucumber salad, fried & white rice, chips. That chicken sate was the best we've ever had! The peanut sauce on it is bomb!!! We've never seen so much peanut sauce on chicken sate-- the chicken skewers were bathing in sauce. The chicken was tender & juicy. I ate up all the leftover sauce with rice. The eggs have a spicy kick so be careful if you have low tolerance. Everything else tasted fresh. We appreciated the variety and being able to savor multiple different things. It was plenty of food for the both of us (and we eat a lot!). We talked to Jerry a bit and he was incredibly kind and welcoming. I appreciated the Christian music played in the background and messages around the restaurant. Seated the menu was presented right away, after about 10 minutes staff asked for my order, I got: - Spang Makandra Special €17.50: this is a plate of several of the house specialities. Fried rice & noodles, braised chicken, grilled chicken satay, stir-fried long beans, egg, potato sambal and perkedel (fried potatoes). So tasty all around! Loooved the braised chicken was done very well, the peanut sauce used for the chicken satay was a bit on the sweeter side. The egg was scrambled (believe this was intentional for this preparation), the flavors were delicious! I can't comment to the authenticity since I'm no expert in Surinamese food though would certainly recommend this dish to all. - Dawet €3.00: if you're familiar with SE Asian shaved ice with palm sugar syrup, the flavor of this drink is reminiscent. While the color is a bright pepto bismol pink, it's mostly coconut milk with a strong flavor of gula malaka. Was on the sweeter side though glad for the coconut milk to balance out the spiciness of the hot sauce. - Beef rendang sandwich €6.50: sooo yummy. Considering the Indonesian and Chinese influences in Surinamese food, I've eaten my share of specifically Malaysian and Indonesian food in those countries and the curry flavors in the sandwich were prominent and super tasty. The spices were quite strong that even wrapped in foil and inside a plastic bag, my entire bag smelled like rendang (in a most moth-watering way lol) after carrying for some hours. The decor was cozy and filled the left side wall with pics of patrons of the past, opposite wall full length mirrors to make the space look larger. Seating enough for about 50-60 probably. Even though they were slammed, staff checked in periodically on how I was doing, refilled water, which indirectly led to an interesting conversation with another solo diner sitting at the bar. Strong recommend!

Definitely make a reservation as the narrow restaurant has limited seating. They turned away several parties on an early Thursday evening around 7 PM. A rijsttafel is an elaborate Indonesian meal that was adapted by the Dutch who colonized Indonesia. It consists of many, many side dishes served in small portions that are accompanied by rice prepared in several different ways. Although the dishes served are undoubtedly Indonesian, the rijsttafel's origins were colonial. The Dutch introduced the rice table to impress visitors with the exotic abundance of their colony while showcasing foods from different regions. The Dutch adapted the dish during their colonization of Indonesia (1602-1942), basing it on the Indonesian feast nasi padang from West Sumatra. The word rijsttafel is Dutch and translates to "rice table". I was only visiting this beautiful city for a short time. My friend made a resy for us to enjoy a quaint and yummy meal at one of her go-to spots in the area. If you decide to forgo a resy and just walk in, you may have to wait, as there's very limited seating. We walked here and it was easy stroll, enjoying all the little shops & scenery along the way. When you walk in your greeted by a yummy smell of spices. It's definitely a family business. Tiny euro style restaurant. Food - we ordered the Rice table for 2. And bring your stomach space, because it's alot of food. We came hungry and still had leftovers. It's a progressive meal, from mild to spicy dishes. But I believe you can chose your level of spice with the server. 18 dishes come out all at once. Consisting of fish, chicken, beef, veg etc dishes plus rice. All with unique flavor and textures. Would highly suggest it if in the area. Even if it's not in your wheelhouse foodwise, still an interesting experience.
