I'm in synch with most people and the average rating. Cafe' Milano gets 4 stars from me. I was looking for a cafe' or place for a light meal in and around St.-Leonard, which is the real Little Italy as opposed to the fake or old Little Italy, which has become trendy, somewhat expensive, even has a "Southern" restaurant, and from which the critical mass of Italians moved closer to Jean-Talon and Lacordarie. A review stating that this is akin to the "St.-Leonard Community Centre" made me laugh and told me I needed to check it out. So I did. (By the way, I think that would be a center ... and not a centre!) I wanted some solid food and something to drink. I was going to pass on dessert, given that I might later consider the trifecta of bakeries I like in this area - Alati, Italia, and Conca d'Oro. That said, I went for the steak sandwich, which seems to be a staple at Cafe' Milano. It was a thin, nicely cooked, and very usable little slab of meat, meaning you could eat all of it effortlessly. It had tomatoes, lettuce, and was nicely seasoned. It was filling without bogging you down. I also had a soft drink. I felt that the prices were about right ... I mean, this was a bona fide steak sandwich. Cafe' Milano is slightly north of and parallel to the 40 (the Autoroute Metropolitaine) on Jarry. With the lower density in these parts, you will find street parking. They take cash and debit cards, but not credit cards. What I also learned is that debit cards from outside of Quebec (or Canada) do not work. Thus, I paid in colorful Canadian coin. The service has that great neighborhood vibe found up this way and differs slightly from what you might experience in Centre-Ville. I did not find Cafe' Milano to be the "St.-Leonard Community Centre," and I was a little disappointed. However, the crowd was diverse in that there was a mix of neighborhood folks and some more cosmopolitan patrons who might live and work in this suburban area. Thus, it was not caked with "paesanos" (which people often truncate in sitcoms and street talk to "paesans"). One thing to note is that, behind the covered outdoor eating area running across the front, there are various interconnected large rooms inside, with big windows, in which to get service ... and eat. I'd like to go back to Cafe' Milano and just slow down a little. It might be interesting to become a coffee connoisseur of Milano's offerings and try some of their pastries. This would require several trips. Perhaps the locals have done this and that's why they come back ... all relaxed and on a first name basis. While some folks on review sites mention that they have historically rolled in here to wrap up their night owl adventures, it might be that the "community centre" types have their own peak hours. Overall, this makes for a great counterpoint to a Centre-Ville eating experience. read more

This place was (years ago when they only had the sausage sandwich) the absolute best. Although it's still good, it's not the "must go-to" place anymore. The prices are ridiculously high. The employees don't give a shit....the place still attracts a lot of people because of its past reputation...that reputation went away a while back. I came here on a Friday night with three friends. We each ordered a sandwich and shared some fries, onion wedges, fried mac & cheese bites, and one cannoli. I tasted the pulled pork, steak, and veal sandwiches. Each one was so extremely spicy that I burnt my palate and my throat was on fire. It didn't say anywhere that any of these were spicy. I really didn't enjoy my meal. The onion wedges were also very spicy. The mac & cheese bites and fries tasted alright. Honestly, the only food I enjoyed was the cannoli. That was actually excellent. Also, the guy at the counter took my friend's order wrong, so they brought him something different than what he ordered. They made him pay the difference for his order, although it should have been on the house because they made a mistake. I even told the waiter it should be on the house and he wouldn't budge. This is a very homey restaurant that's very much a part of the St. Leonard culture. I've been here a couple times in the afternoon, and it has a very comfortable, almost family-like atmosphere. There seems to be clientele of all ages, from high school students to old-folk who congregate here for a classic Italian sandwich and coffee. I had a café au lait, which was not served in a French style (porcelain cup/bowl), but was served in a small tumbler glass. It had a layer of micro foam on top, so it resembled a piccolo latte much more than a cafe au lait. The coffee was smooth, but strangely, it was not very hot. It tasted good, but it was not what I was expecting. I'm really curious to know how their cafe au lait differs from the "latte" offered on their menu. Being from the South Shore, we are rarely in St.Leonard so I had never heard about this place until recently (through Yelp of course) Around 11pm, we were in the area and were thinking of grabbing a coffee from Tim's but out of curiosity, searched on Yelp if anything else is open. It truly was a surprise to find a non-chain café that's open 24hrs! The place had a line up and was buzzing, filled with people of all ages from large families to couples and students. Despite having such a large seating-area inside, it took a while before we were able to get a seat - I guess the family-like atmosphere doesn't let anyone leave! After reading the reviews, we had to try the famous Cannolis (which definitely lived up to their reputation - delicious!). 24 hour operation that is a must try while in Montreal. Great people behind the counter serving up really good "fast" Italian food. Get yourself a coffee, a panini (I recommend the plant based option but regular sausage all dressed used to be the go to favourite) and if you're lucky one of their zeppole or cannoli if not zeppole season. Ask for no hot peppers if you're not into heat (it's medium hot at best) as all dressed includes hot peppers on every panini. They have hands down one of the best cannolis in Montreal. They also make great zeppole and other pastries, and coffee. The place is usually lively, and their parking lot tends to be packed. It's also open very late, which is a plus. The cafe is spacious enough to accommodate groups, making it great for get togethers for coffee and food. Nostalgia is a fickle thing. I used to come here regularly during my clubbing days (at least when I struck out...) at 3 am. Anyways.... let's talk about the grub. Milano serves Italian styled sandwiches and you can get it either a 7 inch panini or a 10 inch panini. They are sold without combo options at around $10 each which makes them a little pricey for what they are. They have a variety of sandwiches such as steak subs, chicken, veal, eggplant, porchetta....and overall they're good but ill be honest and state I've had better elsewhere. In fact, there are much better options not far away from Cafe Milano but sadly they're not open at all hours like Cafe Milano is. I guess you take what you can get. I had their onion rings as well during my last visit and they were just OK. They are a little spicy and on that note for those of you who like spicy, the sandwiches can be made quite spicy to your pleasure. They also have coffee (it is a cafe after all) as well as Italian pastries like cannoli. I didn't partake this time around but they do have a solid reputation in this regard. Growing up in the North-East side of Montreal, Milano's was an often late night or after school spot that my friends and I would hit up. The coffees and pastries were still decent, the cakes were OK, the cannolis were still good. The sandwiches are really oily, and kinda lacks in flavour. I used to order them with extra hot peppers and extra eggplants, that usually does the trick. Without it it can be quite dry. Cafe Milano's, a classic St. Leonard staple. If you're from the east end, you've probably had Milano's at least once in your life. It's part of St.Leo culture. They're known for their paninis. You could order anything from a cold cut panini to a chicken or veal cutlet panini or even a steak sub. The food is good, fills you up. However, I feel as though I could make better ones at my place. I also find it a little bit pricey. 10$ for a sandwich seems a little on the high end. It's good, but there's better. Also, it is open until 4:00am. Everything is covered in oil (blessing in disguise), if it weren't for the oil you would notice how dry and overcooked the sandwich meat is.
