Seeking a unique coffee experience (and some good espresso after a morning at the Musée d'Orsay), we set out to try the oldest coffee roaster in Paris, Cafe Verlet. I immediately knew I was in the right place when we arrived - the cafe appeared as if it were in a snapshot from another era. From the window, I spotted an impressive display of jewel-toned jellied fruits and a coffee counter where you could purchase fresh beans and jams. The cozy seating area had a few tables set close together, and we were fortunate to be seated at the last open table. I ordered the cafe au lait, and my mom ordered the cafe glacé. The cafe au lait was brought out in an espresso mug and a pot of steamed milk - this way, you could add the desired amount of milk to your espresso. The espresso tasted smooth, and the milk was whipped to the perfect cloud-like consistency. I also tried a sip of my mom's cafe glacé, which was sweet and refreshing (the iced option also comes with a side of simple syrup). As a finishing touch, each beverage was delivered with a small square of chocolate. While pricier than a coffee at a typical cafe, this was one of the best cafe au lait I have ever tasted and worth every Euro. After savoring our coffee, we tried a few of the jellied fruits, which were sweet as honey and very decadent. We agreed that this was one of the coolest coffee experiences, as it truly felt like taking a journey back in time. read more

Cafe Verlet was outstanding. It was a few minutes away from our hotel and opened at 10 on a Saturday (Yelp hours are incorrect). It's a very cozy shop like most Parisian restaurants so be prepared to sit inches next to your neighbor. My husband ordered the cafe allonge (Americano) which was served with a double shot of espresso and hot water on the side. I ordered a noisette (macchiato) which was perfect and beautifully made. Since it was the first bite of the day, he ordered the slice of toasted brioche with butter and homemade jam, while I ordered the bread basket with butter and jam. Their jam was amazing and grape I think, based on the seeds, color, and light taste. The butter was served warm with one small baguette of white and a square ciabatta roll that tasted like wheat. They sell jams, honey, cookies, coffee beans, and teas to go, and are in no hurry to rush you out of there. Enjoy the drinks, relax, and take your time. read more

My husband has a real love affair with coffee and when he found out that Verlet had been roasting coffee since the late 1800's, he HAD to go. Like many cafe/restaurants in Paris, the dining rooms are small and cramped, really intimate seating. We showed up around 2-3pm and again, this place was packed. We found an open table upstairs and waited just a few minutes for a server to come along, clear off the table and provide us with some menus. Since we were there specifically for the coffee, we tried two different roasts, the jamaican blue mountain and the infamous kopi luwak. The server brought them out in these cute little white ceramic vessels to do their traditional pour over. The coffees also came with milk chocolates and dark chocolates. I liked both coffees and maybe the kopi luwak more than the jamaican. I think the acidity was a bit high, but the chocolates really mellowed that out and the smokiness was almost silky. Now, the kopi luwak isn't really ethically sourced, so I won't be ordering that again, but I'm glad to say I tried it. I think because of the history of Cafe Verlet, this place should be visited at least once during your Paris visit. read more

Coffee roaster from the 1800s? Count me in! Keeping to my coffee bean tradition, I wanted to make sure I came home with my stash of coffee beans. What's amazing about Cafe Verlet is how old school of a roaster this is. No hipster, fancy machines. No artsy furniture. It looks like you're transported back to the 1800s and I loved every moment. There was someone who explained all the beans for us and helped us pick out our stash. Prices weren't back either (about $7-9 per 1/2 pound). They stamp the date and coffee roast name. It was a great experience. We also had an afternoon coffee break here. Ordered iced lattes, ice cream and brioche. Coffees were strong, ice cream was creamy and delicious. Would highly recommend Parisian caramel. They sold all the jams and cookies that came with our treats. Inside seating only with AC which is hard to find in Paris during the summer. A bit on the pricy end, but it was worth it for the experience alone. read more

One of the best coffee shops in Louvre area. Traditional coffees and tea, purveyor of finest varieties to bring home for yourself or as special gifts, can't get these at the airport. Brioche slices, French toast, waffles, baked eggs all terrific. Since 1880 roasting coffee you know they do it right! I enjoyed the coffee which came with a pot of hot water to dilute for my preference. Along with the coffee they offered the creamiest melt in your mouth dark and milk chocolate pieces. Roasted to perfection the hazelnut color beans are lovely. The entire vibe of this place is warm, hospitality and welcoming especially on a color day. I have to admit I was hesitant about the candied fruit in the window display. But it turned out to be delicious in a fruit cake. Super buttery not over the top sweet and melting. We also ordered some tea and a croissant. I loved this place and I'd go back again. read more

Decided to do a walking tour of recommended places to eat. Each place recommended by Anglo centric media was a disappointment. So I switched to French centric media sites. Le Verlet was recommended as the place to go for a traditional "petit déjeuner". It has not disappointed. The coffee is better than all of the other specialty coffee houses I visited. It's breakfast menu is perfect and the wait staff were friendly and accommodating. I will be coming back next time I visit Paris. read more

I found Cafe Verlet while I was walking around Paris. I had the most delicious cup of coffee I have ever had. I love seeing so many locals walking in and ordering coffee beans from the store manager. Over all the atmosphere, breakfast, and coffee itself was pretty good. My server was very friendly and fairly competent even for American standard. (Now, give me not a crap about this. I was in Paris for 5 days. I know what I experienced and try to give a fair review.) However, the guy who were at the register wasn't so friendly. Coffee was good but I don't call it excellent. I have far better coffee that their coffee in Spain, U.S. and Vienna. However, I've been to 2 different roasters while I was there and it was better than other place. I had waffle and smoke salmon dish and croissant. It was well put together dish especially for coffee roaster. I'm saying this way because roaster tend to focus on more coffee quality than food. I came here under the recommendation of a friend who knew that this cafe was a secret gem which sold coffee made from cat poop! Make sure to order Coffee Kopi Luwak! It is made from cat poop originating from indonesian. The cat-like animal ingests the coffee cherries needed for this bizarre delicacy, but doesn't digest them. The animal passes the beans through its digestive tract to be picked up by waiting humans. It is an incredibly expensive type of coffee and also incredibly rare. A cup at selfridges or such can set you back to almost $60. Luckily, Cafe Verlet serves it at a MUCH cheaper rate that is highly affordable. Wow this coffee shop is super cool. It's not like a Starbucks or anything. They also have breakfast/lunch available. We ordered a long black and a latte. What we thought was super interesting was that they served us our coffee with the milk separate from my latte and the hot water separate from the black. It was perfect. Also got a side of chocolates :) We were visiting so we didn't have our pet with us but we saw two pets in the store and off leash. How cool is that! They were both super well behaved too. read more

Such a great place to relax and read! My friend and I had been going non stop being tourists in Paris, London, and Brussels and we finally came full circle back to Paris and wanted a day to relax. Found this gem of a place. They do have wifi but it's not really advertised, so you'll have to ask for the wifi code. We each got a pot of tea and the tea cups are the cutest! So cute that I bought a couple to bring home! They also provided a complimentary chocolate to go with our teas. We brought our books and sat by the window reading, drinking tea, and people watching. It's not a super big place but big enough that they had plenty of tables and lots of people just stopped by for a quick bite or drink so turnover was pretty high so there were always tables opened and we didn't feel like we had to give up our table and were never given the impression that we over stayed our welcome. read more

When I think Coffee, Cafe Verlet is literally the exact thing I think of. This is by far the best cafe I've ever had the opportunity to visit. The cafe is out of this world amazing. We were looking for a quiet place that's slightly off the beaten path but close to where we were at the time. We were able to get work done which is a plus, but the coffee offerings were down right amazing. It's a relaxing environment with an extensive, unique, and very inviting menu of different coffees and teas. They also offer food for purchase in the front of the store if you are feeling peckish. Absolutely lovely coffee house! This place is open earlier than most Parisian cafes in the area. I had an absolutely lovely late and had brioche bread with jam-absolutely divine. They also have a huge variety of beans to choose from if you like to take any beans home from your trip. Cannot recommend this place to anyone. I'm in France visiting family (and so I speak French, although I cannot really write/type it), and my mother and I got caught in the rain today on the rue St. Honore and decided we could use some tea to warm up. I ordered the "magie blanches" (supposedly with aromas of rose, peach, and apricot) and was extremely disappointed. I served myself immediately so as to not let the tea steep too long (I believe white teas are especially sensitive to that) and was greeted with the most bitter tasting drink I've ever had. I flagged down our waitress (who had disappeared back downstairs for a good 15 minutes or so without a peep) and told her I'd only had a sip and it was the most bitter thing I'd tasted. She talked down to me and told me "well that's why you don't let it steep too long." I may have waited all of 10 seconds, so I don't believe that was the issue, told her as much, and asked if I could have another tea instead. She said sure but that she would charge me for both. So, I was given tea that was either steeped improperly by you, or was perhaps too bitter because it is past its age, or maybe it was just a bad tea, but tough cookies I'm out 8 euro? Fantastic. My mother ordered an orange ceylon tea. She is sick and so she could not taste much of the flavor but said that she could taste that the quality of the tea is not very good. We begrudgingly paid our bill, then caught a taxi to Mariages Frere where the service was superb and the teas of excellent quality (not to mention, larger quantity). Maybe the coffees are better at Cafe Verlet but thanks to this experience, we'll never return to find out. My advice: splurge a little and make your way to Mariages Freres or Laduree. Yes, you pay more because of the name but I have never been disappointed by the product, and the service has always been very friendly and overly helpful.
