In its own little roof garden idyll on the top of the slightly rundown Citta Centre, close to the Maspalomas Dunes and the architecturally stunning Riu Palace Hotel, is the Cafe Wien, a fabulous swish Coffee Bar patronised by all the knowing in-crowd of Playa del Ingles. Between three in the afternoon and evening it is packed with Beautiful People enjoying the finest cappucinos and kuchen the island has to offer, as they idle from the beach after a long days tanning and swimming. Cafe Wien has a beautifully organised and laid out sundeck with huge white umbrellas shading the patrons, white wrought iron tables and chairs with white-and-yellow stripped padded banquettes, sang de boeuf tiles and matching crockery. Inside is crisp and clean with beautiful chandeliers, matching Austrian prints on the walls, and a fine kitschy taste in schlager muzak tinkling from the speakers. The kuchen are utterly delicious and hilariously cheaply priced, and all the staff utterly charming and efficient.
