This restaurant is no longer called Cagney but is under new ownership under a different name. It still serves Indian cuisine.

The Sultan is one of the best Indian restaurants anywhere IMHO. The aroma of authentic Indian cuisine greats you as you enter the Sultan. My all-time favorite dish here is the Lamb Vindaloo (5/5 £13.35) -- a fiery, spicy curry with tender lamb. I enjoy it with a side of Corriander Naan (5/5 £3.85) and some Mango Lassi. Located in a former Methodist church, the Sultan has kept many of the church's features in the dining room, which contribute to the atmosphere. It also does not serve alcohol, but there's a pub nearby for a pint before dinner. The staff has always been welcoming, friendly and attentive.

In my opinion the prices were standard of modern restaurants (£7-10 for a main)(which is a little pricey, in my opinion). The staff were generally okay, but compared to other restaurants in Lancaster (see Imrans), they were pretty unfriendly. The food came within a decent time and was hot, which is always a positive sign especially as I was part of a large group. Overall, I wouldn't tell people not to visit Sultans. But rather, I would tell them there are better places in Lancaster if you want Indian/Pakistani food. But this is only my opinion, based on one dining.

So we thought we'd give it a try based on the reviews here. What a pleasant surprise. We received a warm welcome, we hadn't booked a table, but were shown straight to a table. It was quite busy considering it was only 7:15pm. As Curryholics, we thought we'd try something a little different, so we had Poppadoms, then the Mixed Platter to start, followed by the Agni Karai, Lamb Matka and a Cheese & Garlic Nan. The food was superb. Both are medium dishes with lots of flavour & just the right amount of kick!! The bill came to £37, including drinks, so overall it was good value. The service was welcoming, friendly & helpful. Will definitely be back.

Obviously driving means no drinking so therefore even thou this is my favourite I don't manage to get there as often as I would like. The guys who run this place are not local and commute a couple of hundred miles each day and because of this they seem to put maximum effort into making your visit well worth while. Food is good (better than average) Service is 100% Decor is OK but but nothing fantastic Overall - very enjoyable and worth while
