My family stayed here for 3 nights and loved every minute of it. The hotel took care of our every need. We arrived late at night to check in and the chef offered to still stay up to cook us dinner, and it was amazing! Beat whiskey and Best Veggie Haggis I had on the entire trip! The rooms were beautiful and the location was perfect. Thank you for the free umbrellas, the free wifi, and letting us barrow some outlet converters. We love and appreciate all you have done for our family during our stay. We hope to be back again! Xx

Immediately upon checking in the family home-like atmosphere in this great wedding venue is…read moreapparent. All the staff a well versed in the responsibilities and work as a great team. Special mention must be made of George who filled a role as kind of Night Porter and Barman. I can't personally comment on breakfast but the buffets and evening meals were very well served and cooked. The late-evening cheese board in the drawing room on our last night was practically a work of art. My twin room was slightly on the small side and I can only presume that the lack of a lock on the bathroom door was to stop children locking themselves in by accident. Being unable to stand for a shower was a mild inconvenience for myself and the guests who had a similar room (the Maids & Butlers snugs respectively) but an issue which could I'm sure be easily rectified with minor redecoration. Bar prices (Tennent's £3.60 a pint) were rather on the "captive market" side of the scale and a reduction where possible of those would I'm sure increase revenue from that quarter and stop folk nipping into Dumfries for supplies from the massive Tesco. Letting guests add their own level of sauce and pepper to their Bloody Marys was though a very nice flexible approach. The grounds are pleasingly landscaped and I imagine that in the warmer months are even more of a delight to amble around. All in a very good choice for an extended wedding or other family event.

The reception is clean and tidy, the lady on reception over my stay was very friendly and helpful, she actually showed an interest in my reasons for my stay. There is a vending machine within the hotel if you get peckish or thirsty. Each room is well equiped with tea and coffee making facilities and TV's. There is ample parking outside and the hotel is next to the Solway Gate which is fantastic. This is an excellent priced hotel where kids stay free. The only downside is the hotel does not offer air-conditioning.

Lunches and evening meals are served in the restaurant again this can get really busy so best to book it Bar meals are also on offer and the menu offers a lot from snacks to meals all at competitive prices be sure to check the board for the daily specials . There is a family room where your children can play pool or listen to the juke box or bother you for money for the machines while you enjoy a wee drink.I have never stayed here but heard that the rooms were nice and spacious.Staff are ever so friendly.
Travelodge Hotel - Dumfries

Although just off the A75 outside of town, this Travelodge is set back far enough from the road…read morethat the traffic noise doesn't disturb too much. Rooms are the usual good standard that you expect from Travelodge; a very comfy king size bed and minimal room facilities. But clean, and with a good shower. Breakfast is limited either to a pre-ordered pack of cereal and juice, or you can go to the Starbucks next door. The options there are not much better but at least they have drinkable coffee. If you are prepared to walk 5 minutes and negotiate the busy roundabout, there is a Table Table restaurant next to the Premier Inn across the road that offers a more extensive (and expensive) pub grub-style menu. Other than that, you need to be prepared to drive into town for a decent meal. There's also a Shell garage with a wee shop that you have to drive through to get out so don't forget to fuel up!

There, I said it…read more Dumfries is probably the uggliest town in Scotland (sorry Dummies) and this pub/hotel would win the uggliest pub/hotel contest easily. But we slept there and the bartenders were very cool, both when we arrived and with breakfast when we left. Crappy rooms, in need of an update, everything smelling like American motels, you know that awful spray air refreshment odor, yikes. But the beds were not too bad and like I said, we needed a place to sleep for a reasonble price. We got that there. The wifi didn't have any reception in the room, the parking lot (huge) is a mine field of sink holes, but hey, it has a free parking place! Don't stay here longer than one night. Enjoy the breakfast.
