What an unexpected pleasure !…read more Our tour bus stopped here on the way from Kilarney to Dingle. As we marched in we saw 38 Irish Coffees lined up on the bar waiting for us. They were great- no doubt benefiting from real good Irish whiskey and coffee. (No kidding the coffee in Ireland was consistently stellar). But as good as my Irish coffee was, it wasn't the best part of our visit. Our host gave a tremendous presentation on Irish explorer Tom Crean, a local lad. Tom Crean's courage and leadership helped his expedition reach the South Pole under horrible conditions. This was a great stop!

Many tourists have been back and forth that road since then but the pub, attached to a hotel, is not doing at all badly, though you'd have thought the maintenance work, which put the outside benches out of commission, going on this week would have been done at the start of the season. Killarney was very busy and there were quite a few in Mollys in mid-afternoon, some snacking, some drinking and some doing both. We were met by a smiling waiter on the way in and ordered coffees which were brought to our table. The coffee was better than average and top-ups were available. We enjoyed our interlude there.

While enjoying some lovely Guinness, we had succulent burgers and/or lamb stew. The meat was so tender, flavorful. Our second night, we were treated to a magnificent quartet of young Irish musicians and some Irish dancers. They even played Johnny Cash! Murphy's is very much a locals' pub. It has to be. It's in the middle of nowhere in a small town on the coast of Ireland! It's a place to meet your neighbors, or in our case, the people who live in the town we were staying in for the weekend. The town of Brandon is a beautiful place, and the people you'll meet have probably lived there their entire lives, so everyone knows each other and is (as is typical) friendly as can be. You won't find anything special at Murphy's - except if you're there on a live music night. But you'll enjoy yourself, and if you're in Brandon you won't have many other options!

Gayle and I enjoyed watching him work and I appreciated his no-nonsense approach, first by warning me that if a person that had shown up earlier came back, I would move down the line. He didn't and it helped that I knew and told him exactly what I wanted. Having my previous belt handy helped at 2 stages in the process. We were excited to visit Courtney's during our time in Killarney as we noted they were very…read morewelcoming, friendly and overall great...however, I was disappointed with our experience at Courtney's. We popped in after dinner and bellied up to the bar only to be passed over multiple times by the bartenders. They clearly saw us, even made eye contact at times, but just kept moving, taking orders of folks who walked up to the bar well after we had sat down. It was the strangest experience of bar service we had experienced in Killarney. Once the bartender actually acknowledged us, she was friendly. We got our drinks and moved to the front room where they had live music. We finished our drinks, enjoyed the music and called it a night after one pint. The space has all the character of an old Irish pub and we had high hopes for Courtney's, but sadly it was the one negative experience on our trip. Overall, disappointed. Enjoyed the pint and the space is cool, but we wouldn't recommend as a "must do" on a trip to Killarney.
