Good, a bit sweet. Messy to eat. 3/5 Truffle fries - good but average 4/5 Polenta - very tasty, a must. 3/5 Duck and waffle - I expected this to be bigger but it was good. I normally prefer chicken but the duck wasn't bad. All the food was decent and the staff were all nice. It's unfortunate that the walk to the restaurant passes by the smelly toilets. Also there was only one lift working that day so it took a little time to get up/down.

I've been looking forward to visiting Duck & Waffle for quite some time. The views are incredible,…read morethe space itself is striking, and on paper it promises that perfect London mix of skyline, late-night energy, and elevated comfort food. Unfortunately, our experience was soured before it even had a chance to begin. My girlfriend and I walked in excited, completely amicable, simply hoping to head upstairs for a bite and drinks. We were greeted by the doorman with an immediate, dismissive "Are you good?" -- not in a welcoming or helpful tone, but in a way that felt skeptical and unnecessarily confrontational. There was no warmth, no "welcome in," no attempt at hospitality. It immediately set an uncomfortable tone. He then proceeded to call upstairs as though he were doing us some sort of favor just by allowing us to go up. The entire interaction felt transactional and judgmental rather than gracious. First impressions matter, especially at a place that positions itself as a premium dining destination. Hospitality begins at the door, not at the table. When we finally made it upstairs, the room was filled with visibly drunk, rowdy groups -- which only made the earlier attitude feel even more misplaced. If that environment is acceptable (and profitable), then two polite guests looking for drinks and food shouldn't be met with suspicion at the entrance. By that point, the damage was done. The initial interaction had already rubbed us the wrong way, and the energy upstairs didn't help. We ultimately decided to leave before even sitting at our table. That's how strongly the first impression impacted us. It's difficult to justify staying somewhere when you don't feel genuinely welcomed from the outset. Duck & Waffle has the potential to be memorable for all the right reasons. But someone representing the brand at the very front needs to understand that hospitality isn't optional -- it's foundational. A simple, respectful welcome would have changed everything. I hope management takes this seriously, because no guest should feel judged or dismissed before they even step inside.

I ordered the bolognese with tagliatelle (you can choose your own pasta type), my friends the carbonara and beef shin ragú. The drinks were nice and the desserts were delicious, we had the brownie and the cheesecake. There were also a couple people having birthdays that night and the staff were very accommodating in providing candles and singing. I probably wouldn't come here again since you can find far better italian food elsewhere, however you can't beat the price. For a main, a drink and a dessert, I only paid £20, hence the three stars.

The atmosphere and entrance is very memorable. You're patted down before taking a private elevator to the top where you are treated to a 270 degree view of London and the City of London. It's breathtaking at sunset. The food was good, not amazing, but good. We shared multiple steaks, pork chops and other entrees since we're all foodies. Overall the food quality was superior and the outcome of our meals very good. Dessert and wine were good and memorable, especially the 20yr port. The service - truly poor and borderline non existent. Our server acted like he didn't care. Scratch that, he didn't care - not an iota, a smidge, or even a shake. He was rude and willfully Ignored us for the first 26min, then continued to socialize around the restaurant showing no modicum of respect for his job, his customers, his persona in the restaurant, or the Gordon Ramsay brand or image. He didn't even smile or act kind - gross. I eat in some of the finest restaurants around the world and take customers out for dining experiences. The service here was the poorest I've recvd in ages. I've eaten at dive bars in America where the wait staff at least asked, "how was your meal?" or "thank you for your business...". I could not take a client to Bread Street out of fear the poor service would taint or infect my business relationships. There was a bright spot. We did have a lovely woman provide us our desserts... she was a delight and deserves a promotion for adequate doing her job and smiling at us. Sadly, if you decide to try Bread Street Kitchen, I can state your meal may very well be good or perhaps even very good. The service, on the other hand, could be spectacularly memorable in the worst of ways. Buyer beware. The upside - this is the easiest problem to fix imo for Mr. Ramsay and his leadership team. We had zero expectations, but ended up having what might be our favorite meal of the whole trip. The staff? Absolute gems -- especially patient with us Texans who came armed with 400 questions (bless them). The restaurant's tucked downstairs, and here's a tip: book bar seating. Not at the bar, but in the room with the bar. It's cozier, prettier, and avoids the more standard dining space. The vibe? Understated elegance. Think cozy meets classy without any of the snobbery. Now, let's talk food. The Yorkshire pudding was no slouch, but the vegetarian Wellington--oh man. I was fully prepared to mourn the absence of beef, but it turns out blasphemy tastes incredible. Rich, flavorful, and completely unexpected. My jaw said "wow" before my brain could form a sentence. Would we go back? In a heartbeat. And possibly request the same cabbie for more divine dining directions.

My wife actually booked dinner reservations in advance for Ye Old Cheshire Cheese, it was one of a few we did that for rather than just popping in. For some of these, Cheshire included, it isn't a bad idea if you want a full meal to do so as it gives you a table in a dining area that is quieter than the More raucous areas of the pub and guarantees you plenty of elbow room to dine. Every pub has fish and chips, and we had our share of it during our 8+ day trek, but my wife swears by this place as having the absolute best. I'd likely agree with that--we both had the traditional fish, chips, peas platter and every bite was great. We had a few slices of sourdough to hold us over while waiting for those plates. My wife had a bit of wine, and I tried a lager, lower ABV ale, and a pour of scotch opting for their "house" scotch. The spirits/beer menu was the same I saw used at a couple of what I think must be "sister" pubs all using the same distilleries and brewers. We were too full to try dessert. Service was friendly. Not sure if it was the vintage of my scotch or her wine, but price-wise this was by far our priciest pub visit in the area and I can't quite point my fingers at why, but I don't regret our meal and time here. As for historic interest, you can find pictures and placards of many of the pubs famous patrons from history--Dickens, Mark Twain on visits to London, etc. A first edition of a Dickens' book adorned a post by our table.

It was a perfect time in April because when we arrived the sun was still out but his night progressed, we were able to watch the sunset over the tower bridge and reflecting onto downtown in London. My wife's appetizer was the poached crab and the entree the halibut. I had the grilled octopus as an appetizer and the Welch lamb chops for my main. We had a wine pairings, bubbles for the appetizer, my wife had a beautiful Chardonnay from California with her dinner and I had an Italian red. Dessert with also excellent. The apple tart was one of the best desserts we have ever had. The service was good but a little bit disjointed. We're married now, and just went back to London with my side of the family, a party of 11 including three small kids. I was in charge of booking restaurants for a few massive dinners, and I decided we would all try the iconic St. John. This involved contacting the restaurant over a month in advance and going back and forth with events manager Thea Elder, exchanging over 20 emails about menus, children, signatures, etc. She was great, always prompt and helpful. With our party size, we had to pre-order the feasting menu, which was £100 per adult, and no charge for the children. It included two starters, two mains, and two desserts, served family style, which I selected with her guidance. I also added some extras, a starter and a few sides. Unnecessary, but I have no regrets. After all that, I had a sick kid the day of our reservation, and St. Grandma ended up staying back at the hotel with both of my sons. I let the restaurant know, but it didn't really matter. I understood we were on the hook for a dinner for eight, and to be honest, my mom wouldn't have eaten her share anyway. The restaurant was instantly likable, a casual, vibrant place with the easy air of a beloved institution. Service was professional and friendly. We didn't need much, as everything was pre-set. We weren't even shown the daily menu, and weren't given the option to order anything a la carte (I wouldn't have minded adding a thing or two that not everyone would have wanted, but Thea had told me this might not be possible, and we already had too much food). We did get an XL bottle of red wine to go with our XL dinner, as well as two other red bottles. Good wine at decent prices, especially for a Michelin-starred joint. The food was outstanding. I'd heard from multiple people that St. John was British cooking at its best, and that was certainly my experience. Everything was delicious, and unlike anything I ever see where we live, in California. The presentation was homey but nice, the platters intimidatingly large. Dinner started with the house brown bread and butter, fantastic, and langoustines with mayonnaise, one of my additions to the feasting menu. These were sweet, plump langoustines in their shells, served with mayonnaise and lemon. For our starters, I went with the roast bone marrow and parsley salad and the poached salt fish, samphire, and potato. The bone marrow is famous, a St. John signature, on the menu continuously since 1994. It's the direct ancestor of all the bone marrow dishes in upscale restaurants across the world, and also an approachable example of Fergus Henderson's nose-to-tail cooking. It was delicious and fun to eat, the rich gloopy marrow served in open bones with bread to spread it on, coarse salt and bright parsley salad to put on top. The salt fish was equally excellent, sort of a big salad with delicate cold fish and creamy potatoes with samphire, a salty seaweedy plant I'd never had before. I loved this dish. I ordered the roast beef and crispy pig's cheek for our mains, figuring the roast beef would be safe and the pig's cheek adventurous in the St. John spirit. The roast beef was lovely, tender and flavorful, served with horseradish, greens, and trenchers, bread to soak up all the juices. The crispy pig's cheek was great, meaty and gelatinous, tossed with green beans, roast shallot, and a dressing to bind it all together. There were enough vegetables in the mix that we probably didn't need our extra order of green salad, but it was nice. Likewise the potatoes. The Welsh rarebit, on the other hand, was definitely additive. A fat slab of golden toast smothered in a delectable hot cheese sauce. Desserts were splendid. Moist, spicy ginger loaf came in sticky butterscotch sauce. On the lighter end, a lush berry mousse with thick cream and sweet raspberries and strawberries. Both top tier desserts, as notable as the meats. This was a wonderful dinner, truly a memorable family feast. I hope to come back to St. John whenever I'm able to visit London. Maybe next time, I'll try a little more nose and tail.

A real food nerd's destination and an open mind is needed to be able to order and experience the offal and off cuts that reclaim some English, classic dishes. It's important to do a little research because the dishes served are not things often seen on menus, especially American menus. The bone marrow and welsh rarebit are classics and a must. The crab on toast is another menu mainstay; the whole brown crab is the alternative for those willing to put more work in. The green sauce is also ever present with the a daily fish. Our table went offal with the gizzard salad (wow, so tender and the dressing had good zing), rissole (mince meat croquet that packed intense meat flavor), roasted heart special (the cut was packed with umami and had a nice balance of toothsome and tenderness), and the cockles bacon and samphire (wonderfully smoke from the bacon and grass and salt in the sea beans). Service was pleasant and straightforward, but it was the food that really shined for us. A wonderful meal with the madelines being a nice finishing touch.
