They only emailed once I wrote a negative review after they automatically requested one. They didn't post it on their website - they only post the 5* ones! I'm very happy with my experience with The Cake Store. I've ordered many times from them and have been happy every single time. However, all of these past times were when I lived at home in London (Brockley). This is my first time doing an overseas transaction with them. In an attempt to purchase a birthday cake for my mother I went online to order. But was unable to submit my order - I think it may have been because it was past the deadline. Anyway, I gave them a call and I spoke with a gentleman who was SO friendly. He took my order and all the details and assured me it would be ready for pick up the next day. Which it was. Obviously, I didn't get to taste the cake this time but I received lots of feedback from family friends telling me that the cake was gorgeous and tasted great. The Cake Store isn't cheap but essentially you get what you pay for and for me, I knew I would get a great looking and tasting cake. That's worth it in my opinion. My police sergeant girlfriend recommended this store to me when I told her I would purchase a retirement cake for her. Her department gave her a surprise retirement party including a cake hence she said she was "caked out" and told me to cancel believing I would at least be able to get a store credit. I contacted the store almost 24 hours prior to pickup and was told by the manager that since the cake hadn't been iced that I would likely be able to get a refund but that I should also email my request. Alas, no answer for 13 hours. The owner was unwilling to accommodate a refund or store credit despite the cake not being prepared. My friend picked up the cakes and had to wait for the cakes thereby underscoring that the cakes could have been re-purposed and the cakestore was perfectly fine keeping my $ and using the cake as inventory. SMH. Even if this is the best cake I've ever had, I will NEVER frequent this store again given their refusal to accommodate a reasonable request given that they hadn't even started customizing the cakes!! The presentation was ok, the cake itself was nothing special, regular sponge cake with jam and cream, which, on one of the occasions seemed a little not fresh. At GBP 72 (in 2013) for a 12 inch square cake, I find this poor value for money, and quite honestly, something of an emotional extortion of parents and relatives, who will, obviously, pay just about anything to get their loved one that dream cake. Btw, on the last note, it's not just the Cake Store, it seems to be the case with most cake shops in London, it appears to be something of a cartel, because a 12 inch cake with no bells or whistles does not cost GBP 72 to make, and nowhere near this amount. Also, in 2012 the same cake cost me GBP 65, so it's 10.8 % year-on-year price inflation... seems a little steep when UK inflation over the period was under 3%. read more

I had bought a cake from them several years before which was good. However, six months ago, my son was devastated when I ordered a Formula 1 cake(cost over 250pounds) for his Birthday and some of the details were missing or not accurate despite having asked specifically for them to be added. I offered to return it and have another made as it was not touched because my son refused it. When I complained, they were slow to respond and refused to give us another one stating that I should have told them before leaving the shop or shortly after. I explained that it was picked up at closing time on Saturday and the Birthday was on Sunday. I was in rush and had not noticed when I left the shop. All they offered was 50 pounds. The cake they delivered was tasty and on time. However, their customer service is terrible, and left me feeling rather upset. Basically, I bought the cake as a gift for my niece. I put a separate invoice address and delivery address as the option on their website, however they sent the invoice to the delivery address (with the cake). They ruined the surprise and left the recipients guilty of how much money I spent on the cake. I rang the store to find out what happened and was spoken too in a thoroughly condescending manner. I was told "for the last four years I've been working here, I have sent it this way" with a rather smug overtone. Utterly rude and dismissive of my complaint. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this store on the principle that if they value your custom, they would have the decency to discuss concerns in a civilized matter. To be be honest, my motivation was to help the store realize their error to avoid doing the same thing to other customers, but now I feel they do not value or deserve my custom. read more

The cakes are usually nice but the concept of customer service is non existent. Whenever I speak to the staff or the driver they always act as if they are doing you a favour - despite generally taking over £100 per cake!! On several occasions I have ordered cakes from them and the delivery is ALWAYS LATE despite paying £15 for delivery. Neither the driver nor the management offer apologies and their standard response is that one of their drivers called in sick. I ordered a cake for a friend's daughter for her birthday. My young friend had suffered a stroke and was in hospital and I thought I was helping by getting the child a birthday cake. I asked for delivery before 10am. The cake store added to her woes by delivering the cake 6 hours after the delivery time and subsequently the child missed visiting time to see her mother in hospital on her birthday! I felt awful and wished I had not ordered the cake! The cake store were nonchalant and said they were very, very busy ! How heartless is this - despite having explained the situation and emphasised the importance of the timed delivery?!! They did not offer any sort of verbal or written apology and no waiver of the delivery fee etc. They could not care less. Service is rubbish and you are better off buying from Selfridges, Harrods or Hummingbird for these sort of prices. We used The Cake Store on recommendation from a friend for our wedding cake. They were incredibly helpful and accommodating, and the cake turned out beautifully (and deliciously). They delivered promptly and without incident on the morning of the wedding, the price was much lower than other local bakeries, and the staff was terrific in answering my many questions. read more

Ordered a 50th birthday cake online and picked it up on the date i requested. The cake was beautifully decorated and was put in a suitable box, easy for me to carry the box home without the cake getting damaged. The cake was delicious and was well worth the money I paid for it. It tasted really fresh. The only fault was the lack of communication, there was no indiciation of what time I should have picked up the cake, apparently all cakes are to be picked up before 4pm on the day you request.
