I've coming to see shows at the Calderwood Pavilion for several years, and I love every visit. My favorite show I've seen here was "Sing Street". It's easy for me to get to after getting of the T at Back Bay Station. There are two theaters inside for shows of different sizes. I find the seats quite comfortable to sit in with good legroom. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I've also been a volunteer usher here - you help audience members to their seats and get a free ticket to the show in exchange. It's a pretty sweet deal! They sell a decent selection of concessions inside. There's also a free water foundation by the gender-neutral bathrooms. There are also great restaurants nearby for a pre-show dinner and yummy ice cream next door, too. My favorite place for dinner before is Posto. read more

i saw we had a world here and was super impressed! i was front row on the furthest right, so my legroom was great. staff was awesome, and i scored the seat for under $40. there's not really a lot to do in the area so i wouldn't count on it being a prime location for dinner and a show, but i had a great time. read more

First time at this venue! Box office was super helpful and quick. The theatre itself is a nice clean space and concessions are not too pricey ($4 for candy, $11 beer). The seating is incredibly clear and it was easy to find our seats. I was impressed by the gender neutral bathrooms, rather than even call them gender-neutral they were labeled "stalls" and "stalls and urinals" which was cool and something I had never seen before. The size of the theatre makes every seat a good seat and the audio was great. The actual play was wonderful. 10/10 excited to come back! read more

Really nice modern theater! Came to see The Office and was pleasantly surprised about how roomy the seats are. Not a ton of elbow room (to be expected) but plenty of legroom for my 6'5" frame. The Calderwood Pavilion is set on the semi triangular block of South End shared by Hamersley's and The Beehive on one side, and Sibling Rivalry and Picco on the other. It is perhaps a comfortable 15 minutes walk through the Back Bay to Copley Station (Green Line). I saw "Our Town" in the Roberts Studio Theatre. The audience was seated on three sides, with the set in the center and on the final of the four sides, as well as a small number of seats upstairs on the balcony. It was a terrific show, though with rather scant stage setting (mostly). Doors to the complex don't open that far in advance, so don't head over too early. *** 5/5/2013 *** I caught the final show for School House Rock LIVE presented by the Boston Children's Theatre and had a swell time! The show had live music and the performers consisted of one adult and a cluster of youth of varying ages. The premise to reviving these learning songs from the 70s and 80s is a school teacher's first day at school and the various thoughts running through his head, as represented by each of other actors. And of course, they break out into song! Props were used to great abandon as well. It was just a fun time for child and adult alike! *** 10/2016 *** Tiger Style! was a entertaining and fast paced comedy by Chinese playwright, Mike Lew. I laughed out loud at times and totally enjoyed myself. The Virginia Wimberly Theatre is a traditional theater of a modern style with wood surfaces and fabric panels covering the walls. The chairs are nicely padded with a comfortable girth for the feet and for seatmates to make their way past. read more

Came here to see The Office and we had a great time. The staff could not have been nicer. The theater is comfortable and has a really nice balance of modern and traditional vibes. The concessions were pretty standard, but very fast service. The seats were very comfortable with plenty of leg room. Long rows of seats with no middle aisle, so be prepared for people coming and going. The acoustics are fantastic. Located in a nice little neighborhood with plenty of restaurants and coffee shops in walking distance for pre and post shows. Limited metered parking on street but plenty of parking in the garage adjacent to the theater. Overall, this is a fantastic venue to see live theater, especially for families! We will definately be back for sure!!! read more

Nice small theater in the South End neighborhood. I attended my first theater performance since the pandemic began at this theater and everything was well organized from the vaccination card checks at the entrance to the mask wearing throughout the performance. I hope to attend more performances here in the future. read more

Saw actor Campbell Scott perform a one-man play called "The Atheist" here this weekend and really enjoyed it. He was excellent and the play was well written. Imagine, listening to one guy do a narrative for an hour and 1/2 and being entertained the whole time. But this review is of the theatre, not the play. I have been here twice now and really love it. The acoustics are great and it's a small enough theatre that every seat is good. We sat in the Mezzanine and had an incredible view. The ushers are friendly and they hand out really nice detailed programs (like you would get at the Wang or Opera House). If you buy your tickets through Goldstar (like I did) you get them for half-price but you dont' get to pick where you sit. It's really not a problem at all though because, as I just mentioned, every possible seat in the theatre is terrific. Support this local theatre! read more

Fun space! Granted, we weren't plopped down in the lush tush cushions of the Virginia Wimberly Theatre main stage, rather comfortable and intimately adjacent to the captivating cast of The Forgetting Curve staged in the Nancy and Edward Roberts Studio black box. Most folks equate black box to a stark, low tech space where Jon Leguizamo fails to impress anyone. Not here. More than adequate battens, high quality sound and an impressive video display easily conveyed the blurring vision for this particular performance. Box office staff are organized and friendly; snacks, drinks (including beer and wine) are avail. Temperature is right, which is important. I'd go back in a jiffy! read more

One of the most comfortable, best-value places to see a show in Boston. I've seen it all here - shows in the blackbox, big productions on the main stage, parties in the rehearsal space. The compact nature of the theater means that every seat is a good one, and the productions are top notch. In one season, you could see Shakespeare by one company, a modern musical by another, and a new play that captivates your attention and opens your mind. The box office staff is friendly and helpful, and it's clear that they put the customer first. I love the intermission refreshments too - they're never too crowded and the prices are reasonable. It makes the whole outing much more of an event. If you want more to eat before/after, there are great restaurants and bars in the area or even closer to the T. Overall, great facilities, great service, great show options - check it out! read more

In a metropolitan city such as Boston there are many choices one can make on entertainment. If you are looking for a place that has some very unique & local live performances than this is a perfect spot. It is a few blocks away from the Back Bay MBTA station & surrounded by local eateries for pre or post enjoyment. The atmosphere around is electric & when the warmer months are around it is usually very busy with people enjoying a night out. The facility itself is quite modern, clean & well layed out. They seem to take great care maintaining the common areas. The staff are quite attentive & informative for every performance I have seen there. It is nice that a bar with a decent selection of wines, beers & snacks are offered plus they let you take in with you. The performance range from modest local productions to ones of grander scale that are national tours. One any given day there could be several events going on at once. The ticket prices are reasonable & many could be found on discount vendors online. The Calderwood Pavilion is the perfect place if you are looking to do something a little different with your day or night. read more

I had a great time at this theatre - we saw "The Little Dog Laughed" (it had nudity and cigarette smoke - rowr) which was a great play - a sort of satirical take on a homosexual actor's struggle to make it in Hollywood, pretty funny and amazingly directed. Anyway, this theatre is really comfortable, has foam soap in the bathrooms (mmmmm foam soap i love you) and has great lighting and stage designs. It's not super huge or anything, but it's a great place to see... well whatever you're seeing. I'd definitely come back here again. read more

The Calderwood Pavilion has performances ranging from Mile Lew's TigerStyle! to John Ford's 'Tis Pity She's a Whore. I would enjoy speaking with the person responsible for selecting the annual schedule. It's rare for a theater to show such diversity. The structure of this South End theater is such that it's impossible to get assigned a bad seat. I find the staff to be warm, efficient, and unobtrusive. read more

The Calderwood has two stages, both very good venues, but be aware of which one you're getting yourself tickets to. The Wimberly is the bigger of the two, and a really lovely space. Comfortable seats, modern design, brightly colored walls, etc. It's still not very large, so I don't think you could really get a bad seat. I've always sat in the second level and never had a problem. The Roberts is the second smaller stage. It was a little bit of a surprise for me, having already seen a show on the Wimberly, to walk into the small, black walled, chairs on risers, space. It's a much more raw feeling, seeing a show on this stage, and it can give you that "in the action" kind of feeling, which can be great but also a little intense. Particularly if you're seeing, oh, I dunno, "Angels in America". Not for the faint of heart, but it can make for a really great theatre-going experience. Bostix often has advance seats for shows at this theatre, which makes their already pretty reasonable prices even better. read more

This facility is really quite beautiful and bright. The ticket woman can kind of blend into the surroundings, so don't rudely walk by her like I sometimes do (hey it's shiny in there and I get distracted). The actual theater is a small space where you really can't have a bad seat. They do have folding chairs which can be occasionally annoying when you're sitting next to a drug/caffeine fiend (click click click click.. tap tap tap tap tap), but otherwise doesn't bother me. The sound is good, which is not always the case in small theaters in Boston. 4 stars for the theater! The shows are... weelllllllllll... they do have some good shows go through there, but they also rent out the space to local theater companies. And weelllllllll.. on most occasions, you can definitely tell you're paying more for the theater rather than the performance. read more

I was impressed to see "In the Heights" in the studio theater. The story is pretty good. I didn't care for the opening scene(s)--too much time spent telling us the story is "in the Heights"--we knew that when we signed up to see the show... But the script is original and there are authentic aspects that make the whole production worthwhile. Caveat: The theater was a bit too cold for me and some of the other patrons. "A Raisin in the Sun" at the BU Theater was a cut above anything I've seen here, but there are still some fantastic shows and experiences that I can reflect on over the last few years. read more

I went here a couple of times when it first opened, but I haven't been back in a while. It's kinda too bad because I remember really enjoying the few productions that I saw. Somehow, I didn't expect how modern & renovated this venue ended up being, since many of the surrounding South End buildings are pretty aged. I sat in the limited (1 row of seats) balcony area, overlooking a small space where Our Town was being performed, interspersed amongst audience members. There was a bathroom up on this level...spacious, clean, and no lines. I liked the smaller theatre space, almost black-box-like in ambiance, even though it's a larger space...great theater to see a show. Located in the South End, it's a little bit of a walk from the T, but surrounded by restaurants for pre-theatre dining. read more

Fabulous new play don't miss it. "After all the terrible things I do". Powerful dialogue and story with unfolding developments that hold your interest. Great script by newish playwright great acting direction and set. Opened May 22 thru end of June. The Calderwood is a beautiful theater made up of two stages. On Sunday evening I had the pleasure of seeing "In the Next Room" on the Roberts stage. The stage is very small and in your face which can be very refreshing if the right play is being performed which with this play was perfect. The actor/actresses expressions are what make the witty play so hilarious and enjoyable to watch. My only complaint about the theater is that the seats are not very comfortable for a lengthy play. The plastic sloped back creates a constant hard surface for you to sit back on as well as the lack of any padding. My only complaint about the venue in general is the itty bitty little still bottles of water. If I am going to be expected to pay $3 for a tiny little bottle of water it would be nice to have the option to have a full size bottle to choose from as well. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience and I hope to be enjoying another evening at the Calderwood Pavilion in the near future. read more

This evening, I watched "Before I Leave You" a production of the Huntington Theatre Company." The best part of the night was the theatre itself. The play took place on the main stage which is fabulously laid out. I have nothing but great things to say about the theatre (the Twizzlers at the snack bar were a huge plus for me). The play, however was not so amazing and apparently I was not the only one who thought so. About 1/4 of the audience, including myself, cleared out during intermission. While I haven't been able to put my finger on what the play was missing I will name a few things that have led to my conclusion: there were several missed/rushed through punch lines, one actor in particular seemed to forget his lines, mention of anything dealing with Boston was over emphasized (okay we get it) and the plot was slow moving. I will say the youngest actor and the older gentleman who played Jeremy were amazing. if you get a chance to catch a show at Calderwood make sure to save time to try one of the many great restaurants in the area :) Skip "Before I Leave you" :) read more
