This place is so great! If you haven't gone, go! Drop your child for an hour of painting or go yourself and learn a new technique. Allison is the best! She's patient and kind. She knows how to teach painting to elementary aged children and they have fun doing it! I learned about her through the moms at my daughter's school and then had the opportunity to work with her when I was volunteering for my daughter's school during art class. What I love about Calico, is that I'm really proud of my work because it's all me. And I can get help when I need it. Hailing from LA but being a devoted Bay Area resident, I'm a tough audience when it comes to southern CA. On a recent visit down south, my sister planned a wine & paint night at Calico Canvas for her, my mom, and I. I've always been hesitant to attend these gigs as I don't want proof of how terrible an artist I am, but I was surprised at how much fun it was. Bonus: I'm not as terrible at art as I thought I was! Calico Canvas is a cozy little studio (I think they are new?) and not at all the corporate crap that admittedly I was expecting. My hippie heart sings for small, locally-owned businesses. Allison is also the sweetest and most down-to-earth person. She was a great teacher too, so patient and nice! Pretty much a perfect example of who should be teaching art to kids. A drink was included with the class (TBH, we love wine, so we also brought our own bottle). My sister forgot our cheese & crackers at her house, but it turned out fine because we were able to buy some snacks at Calico Canvas. They even have healthy snacks for kiddos. If I lived locally and had kids, I would totally send them there. Honestly, it's not the kind of place you'd stumble upon, but I think that's a good thing. It's based in a super cute office/retail park called The French Quarter, complete with wrought iron balconies and lots of greenery. (I looked it up as we were leaving because it didn't feel at all like a typical soul-less LA commercial space.) Calico Canvas is on the second floor in the middle. I'm totally glad I went and want others to know it's there. So what are you waiting for? Go get your drink and your paint on! Send your kids to be creative! I sought out art classes after my daughter turned one and I realized I really missed doing something creative for myself. I'd never taken a drawing or painting class before in my life. Through Allison's patience, encouragement and knowledge, I was able to discover a totally new passion. I've been in the room with her as she's coached children and have been amazed at how she remains both easy going and focused, keeping track of everyone's progress. He's so thrilled to wake up early and get there to create his own lil masterpiece. Allison is warm, gentle, and has excellent management of the children. In addition, she has a way of making them feel safe to express their inner artist and not worry about "messing" up. The very first day I knew my son had a breakthrough. Allison is a phenomenal painting instructor. Our daughter started oil painting with her at age 6. Friends and family are astonished at our little girls work. She had never done oil painting before. It is clearly Allison's teaching technique. Her manner of teaching is very kind and patient, especially with small people. She has taught our daughter how to shade, blend, how to section off her canvas into 4 equal parts and where to begin. Most importantly, she has taught her how to be herself in her work.
