Learned how to paint roses.
Luiza S.

Valley Art Workshop is a very special and enchanting place to come to learn about art. Miles Lewis is not only a gifted artist, he is also a brilliant instructor who has helped my visions come to fruition. After one year of hard work I learned new techniques, have been challenged and discovered how to enhance channeling my imagination. Miles has an engaging teaching style where his knowledge, communication, and overall uplifting environment come together to give us an inspiring space in his workshops. Therefore, I highly recommend taking classes at Valley Art Workshop.

Miles is such a great teacher. He is patient and he will help you become better in sketching for sure. I took a free trial class yesterday and also a live model drawing class in the evening. I think I really benefitted from both classes.

One of the cornerstone pillars of the visual art community in San Fernando Valley. I did my college prep for art school with Miles and it was through his instruction I was able to develop a portfolio that was met with scholarship and made my entry to art school much easier. In recent years Miles has been the host of one of the most enjoyable life drawing workshops available in the valley. Lastly I want to mention Valley Art Workshop has also been the home for all kinds of community outreach public art projects I have been proud to be a part of!

I cannot speak highly enough of Miles Lewis and the Valley Art Workshop. Whether you are considering a career as a professional artist or an enthusiastic hobbyist looking to develop your skills, you will find great classes in a wide variety of media and styles. Several years ago I was looking for an art class for my teenage daughter. Her public high school offered no visual arts classes whatsoever and it was difficult to find a substantial drawing class in the area that catered to teens. We were both delighted to discover the Valley Art Workshop. My daughter is now an Experimental Animation major and a Teaching Assistant at CalArts, and she still talks about the classes she took with Miles, how much she enjoyed them and how they benefitted her development as an artist. She appreciates the individual attention that Miles gives to students as well as his "direct and straightforward" teaching style, and describes the beautiful environment of the studio as a "Sanctuary of The Arts." Valley Art Workshop is unique entity, a gem of the Valley where students can explore their creativity while developing concrete skills, and Miles Lewis is an excellent instructor. Look no further if you want to study art in the Valley. He also teaches children's art classes at the Tarzana Community & Cultural Center.

Most of them do workshops and classes here, in the great facilities. LAAFA is a great resource, and you meet many fellow working professionals in classes here too. Check it out if you are in one of the Iatse Locals, maybe you get a deal! I only wish in wasn't so far from me. I live in actual Los Angeles. Smile.

No school now days will teach you how to draw and paint like Rembrant, Bougerou, Ingres, In fact many art schools now days do not teach you the most important concept of drawing and that is that in art learning is life long it does not end with a degree. LAFFA emphasizes that. Furthermore many art schools focus simply on art being just paint splattered on a canvas or some weird as hell sculpture that sells for millions and where the "artist" i.e. like KOONs and Andy Warhol do not even do any work at all. LAFFA is very much like how people back in the ECOLE Beux arts were taught, or how those in the high renaissance were taught, in the atelier style, by the end of one class you will have learned how to truly draw which is the basis of all art! The accreditation, accreditation is a good thing, however it will not mean you will magically teach you how to draw and paint, much like some assume a degree means. no a true artist has YEARS of practice and does not stop because a true artist knows that to be able to truly know that they are good at something, they must remember they always know nothing like the renowned cellist Pablo Casalas once said when he was asked at 93 why he still practiced the cello 3hours a day" i think i am finally improving" that is what you will see here TRUE MASTERS of the lost art of drawing and painting, modern day Bougerou's, Rembrants, Franz Hals, Titian, Ingress etc. Who embody the true spirit of the lost arts which many so called art schools sans Cal Arts and 3 kicks do not teach today. One teacher i highly recommend taking is Rey Bustos, he is harsh, he is firm but his passion will drive you. He is truly an amazing instructor.

As an example, the images attached show a before/after of a painting I did. The assignment was a self-portrait. This was my first time painting a portrait, and I was having significant trouble. After several hours of trying, and failing at home, I decided to wait until the next time I had class. When I got to class and asked for help, within fifteen minutes--literally--Melanie taught me the applicable knowledge, and some great advice that allowed me to immediately improve the painting to a satisfying outcome. Anybody interested in art is guaranteed to benefit from her classes. Her energetic passion for art is contagious. It is also very clear that she understands, and has the solution to many problems that an artist may face. She has an equal amount of patience and understanding for the beginner student as she does for her most advanced. She is very professional, yet has a genuine humility that creates an excellent learning environment. The knowledge and experience that I have gained through Melanie's classes have been priceless. Even art books, which are my other source of instruction, are so much easier to understand now. There are endless things that can be said about Melanie's dedication to her students, but what she has to offer must be experienced. So, if you are looking for a place that will provide the elements needed to improve your art skills, then M Florio Studio Arts should definitely be considered as a choice that will deliver that and so much more!

What ever level you are at, Melanie teaches to it. Best decision ever!!!! I used to paint in high school and in college. However, I haven't picked up a brush more than 3 times since I graduated 20 years ago. Melanie helped me to work through my nerves and pick up where I left off. While being in class I have heard lessons of technique in various styles of painting. I realized that throughout my life I pretty much self taught. I have been on a journey of unlearning bad habits and learning much better techniques. All facilitated through Melanie! The challenge is rewarding and I have come out with some of the best paintings I have ever done. Give her a chance and you'll never regret it!!!
