Today is our last day in Munich, so we had to have one last breakfast at the California Bean. This restaurant is a true gem. The food is delicious and the staff is very conscientious. We have been here for 5 days and have had breakfast here 4 times. Depending on our trip schedule, we either have a light breakfast or very hearty, California Bean offers both exceptionally well. The owner is a true delight. She never stops moving. We have had numerous conversations with her about Munich and life in Germany. She also helped navigate us in the right direction on our first day. Food, service, and facilities leave something to be desired. Came on a Sunday morning and it was very busy (which might explain my experience). I was seated outside and saw my server only twice in about 90 minutes. Waited 20 minutes before I could order and my server walked away in the middle of taking my order . I ordered the love from afar which was frankly not very good. Toast was soggy, eggs were unseasoned, avocado cream was brown, and some of the greens were wilted bordering on rotting (you know when they start to turn translucent and yellow). Coffee was good though. Overall a disappointing meal for about 20 euro. The water in the women's bathroom was broken, though there was no sign or anything posted so I eventually went into the men's room to wash the soap off my hands. Maybe it's better if you go during a weekday, but I wouldn't come again. read more

Had such a fantastic breakfast at California bean. Great location near the main train station. Service was super friendly and the food was fresh, fast and delicious. We got the Coronado and the "love from afar" special. The pancakes were super flavorful and we didn't even mind that they weren't served with syrup or jam. A tiny sprinkle of sugar and we were in heaven. The cappuccino was also delicious. This is a great option if you're looking for a change from the typical cold cut breakfast. Cute little cafe near the main train station in Munich. It's sorta like if Germans started an American style diner. It's not quite American food, it but it's very delicious and the service is fantastic. This is also one of the few places around that you can get a real hearty breakfast, as it seems like Germans are mostly on the coffee + pastry plan for their morning meal. The fresh squeezed juices are tasty and the coffee is excellent. If we are back in Munich we will definitely return. read more

Not a bad little place with a very nice staff. Keep in mind that they do not take credit so bring your cash. We ordered a couple different things which certainly wasn't anything like an american breakfast but that is ok. The flavors were ok but nothing amazing. The breakfast platter with bread was odd being the jelly that came along were in a small plastic cup like a diner in the US. But when this is your breakfast we were expecting a jelly in a bowl or homemade or something. Over all not a bad place. read more

So... I'm from California and we came here purely as a joke. But you know what? Actually was pretty good. The food was basically German, but the place had some cool LA stereotypical vibe to it. The food had some really cheesy California-inspired names. Like "sunset" and "sandy beach". Also they put avocado into random things. They served a latte macchiato in a pint glass. And it was much more of a latte than a macchiato. Four stars for exceeding my admittedly low expectations. read more

We visited California Bean for our first breakfast in Munich and what a welcome! Eating with a toddler in a small restaurant with no highchairs can be daunting and many times, the fact that there are no highchairs can give the impression that babies aren't welcome. However, this was not our experience with California Bean at all. We were waited on by two waitresses who were very happy to have us all there. Our drinks were promptly brought out and they checked on us frequently throughout our meal, interacting with our little one each time. We ordered a smattering from the menu: freshly made carrot, orange, and ginger juice, coffee, the nutella pancake (only1 for the baby), and two of the egg-potato skillets. Honestly, everything was presented lovely. I don't think I've ever had more beautifully made over-medium eggs ever...not even once in the US. The coffee was extremely hot, and despite Germany's reputation for bad coffee, it was strong and hit the spot. They did charge us 5 Euros for a small glass of milk...which I think was outrageous, given that we bought a whole liter for about 3 afterwards. However, the fresh juice was just what we needed after all that time in the airport and the long plane ride- getting those vitamins up! We LOVED this place. Last day in Munich and we were desperately jonesing for a hearty breakfast - tired of pastries and cold cuts/sandwiches for first meal, we found California Bean on Yelp and set out for a hot breakfast. Service was so lovely, very kind, and she spoke some of the best English we encountered in Munich, which is never expected but always such a nice perk! We both ordered off the holiday specials list - my husband had the Coronado Beach, and I chose the Hermosa Beach. Both were absolutely excellent - well seasoned, well cooked, fabulous flavors, and such a pretty presentation. We also had two cappuccinos, which were some of the best we had while in Germany. Very well prepared food. The bacon is thin but incredibly tasty with a unique flavor. The potatoes on one dish were again a unique seasoning, perhaps a BIT salty, and incredibly flavorful (maybe it was a curry blend?) Coffee is rich, not bitter. Oddly, one Frappé came blended, one came over ice. A Café latte was a perfect amount of milk. Again, not acidic or bitter at all... Do NOT go here! I had quite a bad experience here and was quite disappointed. Starting out, the place is ridiculously expensive, where I was charged €.90 for EACH little single use jam that I had to get as a side for my toast and €6.90 for a single 0.5L water bottle. Not to mention, a lot for the main course items themselves were very small in portion, dry, and pretty bland/underwhelming. Long story short, very mediocre food charged at an excessive price. The waiter (who I believe might be the owner or a manager) also seemed to always ask if we wanted x and y with every little thing we ordered, which felt very salesman-y especially when no price was mentioned. I know that might be standard practice, but the way she did it felt disingenuous for some reason. Lastly, she never mentioned that they do not take card until we were done, in which she said "their internet was down" which seems to be an outright lie based on other reviews here saying they were also told no credit card after they had already ordered and ate. I've never been to a restaurant where their system was down like that and they couldn't take card. I ended up having to run to 3 different ATMs over 15 minutes just to get cash, where I then also took a big ATM transaction fee hit just to get the cash, in which she superficially profusely apologized about the inconvenience upon my return. The server (presumedly the owner or manager) just generally felt very fake and disingenuous. What established sit-down restaurant doesn't take cards these days? And if they don't, they usually have a sign pasted clearly on the front or tell you upfront. I don't usually leave bad reviews but felt very compelled to do so here. Don't go here. As an American, I decided to take baby steps in converting to German food. I don't know what the classification of food was put the savory gravy with the pork, bacon, eggs over pancakes was just fantastic. Definitely a must do for a breakfast. The pricing was a little high but it kept the hustle and bustle out of the restaurant but there was a great flow to and from. Located in a busy street in the heart of Munich... The food is good, the reason for the 3 stars is because I asked for a high chair for my two year old son and they didn't have one !!!!! My husband and I were quite shocked! It's simply crazy not to have something as simple yet important for a family setting, especially with small children. An absolute, DO NOT MISS, restaurant while in Munich. The food is absolutely delicious. I ordered an omelette and avocado toast and our server customized everything exactly to my liking. Each bite was a treat. The drink selection was extensive and the an orange, ginger, carrot juice I had was fresh and tasty! To top off our experience, the staff is prompt, friendly and accommodating. It was alright experience. I won't come here again. Felt more like a touristie breakfast place with fancy looking dishes. The ambiance was exactly as expected for a breakfast and brunch place. I chose this place because it had good reviews and also I was looking for a nice breakfast with eggs and bacon. I got the salty pancakes special for the day. It was nicely decorated, but not ideal way to eat though. Pancake were doughie so I didn't eat them. Scrambled eggs, bacon and sliced sausage pieces were good. Potatoes were good except that they came in a basket like French fries. Cappuccino was good. It was balanced with right amount of expresso, milk and foam. A couple things to note, 1. It's cash only and 2. You'll have to pay for water (€ 2.5 for about 250 ml water is pricey IMO. It's Bavaria so I guess distilled beer is cheaper and way to go) I've paid € 22 for salty pancakes, Cappuccino and water. Overall, my experience here, with good, is subpar. read more

What a delight! The service was as friendly as others have mentioned. I felt like family eating here. My avocado toast was yummy, as was my iced latte (in a to-go cup! Wow! You don't see that often in Munich). Fantastic place in the center of Munich. Food is amazing - especially the avocado toasts she makes. Everything is very fresh. The highlight of our meals there, other than the super-friendly owner, are the American style pancakes. I highly recommend coming here for lunch or brunch on the weekends. This place is incredible for breakfast! I'm from California and I'm a bit tired of German food so I thought I'd try this American place. It is very clean and the waitress was so kind. I went on a Tuesday around noon and it wasn't busy at all. The waitress was serving six tables at once so it took a while for her to get to me. This place is not for you if you're in a rush just because of the little staff they have. My waitress spoke great English and was very accommodating of food allergies. The Wilson Creek breakfast special was terrific! I've found that coffee in Europe is not as strong as in the states but the Caffé latte here was delicious. Such a cute little place with great food! And everyone knew it too, the place was hopping (so arrive a little earlier than when you want to eat). I had the "love from afar" breakfast special which consists of 2 pieces of avocado toast, each topped with a fried egg. Really tasty! My husband got the pancake special which consisted of a stack of pancakes with bacon and eggs between each layer. That was incredible! We also treated ourselves to caramel macchiatos which was the perfect mix of sweet and warm coffee on that blustery cold day. We will definitely be back on our next trip to Munich!!! read more
