The only plus side to California Choice is that they offer a variety of plans from employers to choose from and eliminates the need for a minimum number of employees need to be enrolled on a specific plan. This is helpful when there are multiple locations or you have an employer who is truly trying to look out for their employees. The downside - they don't do anything outside their "box". If it's different than what they normally do, the average customer service representative can't do it. It normally takes getting to a supervisor. Their billing is abysmal. You receive the invoice about a week before it is due. They do not offer an online option or even the option to receive your invoice by email. They are horrible about reactivating C.O.B.R.A. elections, esp. if you utilize an outside administrator for those benefits. Employees pay for their C.O.B.R.A., the check clears and they still are denied access to healthcare. They have no concept of medical leaves for employees. I understand that employees can be termed off their company's policy for exceeding FMLA leave. However, they don't have an option to indicate termination of benefits based on medical leave compared to termination of benefits for separation from the company. An employee on medical leave is typically still an active employee of their company. To reinstate their benefits when the employee returns to work almost requires an act of Congress with what they require to prove the employee has returned. They also allow employees to by-pass their employer to cancel benefits, without a verifiable qualifying event. Instead of advising the employee to contact their HR department, they process the employee's request, which can impact the employer should they be audited because they failed to make sure the qualifying event was in place (outside of open enrollment). Overall, this company has A LOT to correct. It appears, however, that's not a priority for California Choice. They are content on collecting premiums and whenever something gets processed, so be it. They see forms; not people. They are slightly better than Covered California when it comes to the chaos they cause while administering health benefits. Sometimes, it's worth going directly with one or two carriers and bypassing their nonsense. read more

Only giving 1 star because I can't submit a review with ZERO. Worst customer service ever! They're the exchange we're currently using for our business's health insurance, and have had such a bad experience. They refuse to work with their customers, screw up your paperwork, delay your approval process, but still expect you to pay on time or get charged a 10% late fee. I like the premise of an exchange because my employees can pick any insurance they want, but holy hell this company is absurd. Maybe I should buy stock. At the rate they're going, they must be extremely profitable on the fees alone. I'm hunting for another company that does something similar. If I could give California Choice NO stars I would. My husband and I filled out the application with our information back on 11/12/2015. We have just received confirmation on 1/6/2016 that we are now active and it was retro'd back to 12/1/2015. California Choice said that they were backlogged and that is why it took so long which I strongly feel is NO excuse. Because I was not in HealthNet's system til now, I had to postpone my surgery that I was suppose to have back on 12/18/2015 because we did not want to get stuck with the bill. Now that we are active, I find out that California Choice input my birthday wrong so I have to wait again. DO NOT use California Choice. They are incompetent and slow. read more

Our company has used California Choice for many years and we have had no problem with the customer service at all. I'm not sure why it has bad reviews here other than the fact that health insurance in general is way too confusing. California Choice let's our employees choose the plan and carrier they want at a price point that works for them. I have had only good experience with support and service. read more

Astonished at such little reviews here, which is not representative of the service upheld by California Choice. I'm in the health insurance industry and work with a lot of insurance carriers on a daily basis. I truly believe California Choice provides unparalleled excellence. Certainly they have a strict policy they must uphold, but once you are familiar with your own health policy and that of California Choice, they provide excellent customer service. Our brokerage writes so much business with California Choice because of how easy they have made it for small-business employer groups to offer a comprehensive benefits package with a competitive array options to their employees. read more

Liars and dishonest. This company stole my money, they owe me $1000 dollars and I have 5 months waiting to be returned.

I received a bill stating that the DD was 4 days before the billing statement. I also received a bill on the 20th of the month...that was due on the 20th of the month. I received it on the 30th of the month and received a nasty little letter that I was going to be dropped. Not ME, but my employees..and they were going to send a letter to each of my husband's employees will receive a letter stating they aren't covered because of non payment of health insurance. I had paid them 09/14/2017 1910.70 for October. Did not receive bill for November so I called them.The customer service agent gave me the adjusted amount of 1130.76. I had not received a correct billing as one of our employees left. Paid $1130.76. Which should be for November and then sent another payment on 10/30/2017 of 1722.74 which should be applied to December. They disagree. So I filed a complaint with the California Dept of Insurance. read more

As with others, sure wish I could give a zero. CC is an insurance company that has no customer service, it is a take it or leave it, their attitude is work under our process or go elsewhere. Patient care is not their thing!!! They issue notices of intent to cancel on the first of the month, the day the premium is due, and even though you may be correct, they take forever to clear their mistakes, all the while presuming that YOU have screwed up and continue with cancellation. The only fix is to prepay and have adjustments in the future. Got a cash flow problem, so what, PAY US FIRST, WE TALK LATER! They gave us two days to fix a documentation issue, but took 6 weeks to respond and tell us that everything was okay! In the meantime, we tried to file a grievance, their customer service representatives didn't even know what a grievance was! And the supervisor actually told us on the phone that there is no grievance procedure, even though it is required by law!! Dept of Managed Health Services cant help either, they are powerless and unable to place sanctions on an insurance company. DO NOT GET COVERAGE WITH THIS COMPANY, YOU WILL REGRET IT!! read more

I can only think of one word... "Crooks". I have an employee, who is pregnant, and we applied for her insurance on October 19th. We followed up every other day to make sure her paperwork would be processed by November 1 so she could begin prenatal care. We were told, yes, her insurance would be effective November 1. It was, however, they billed me for October as well!! So not only was she not told that she was already insured but they charged me for insurance they told me she did not have!!! I asked them to check the records of my conversations and, OF COURSE, there was no mention as to when they told ME of her insured date. So disgusted in the lack of integrity here. read more
