Bumping up my rating to 4 stars. California closets came back very strongly. They accepted the issues and then worked to fix all of them. The product looks great and works well. They have some great employees who take ownership and ensure that customers are satisfied. Will certainly use them for future projects and also recommend them. As a company, they need to fix their processes though. read more

Having spent 35+ years in corporate management, I have never encountered a more disorganized and arrogant service model than the Austin/San Antonio California Closets franchise. The Timeline: We signed in May 2025 for a project promised to take 4-5 days. It began in late July and was not "finished" until September--nearly a five-month ordeal for a standard master closet. The Process Failures: Project Management: Non-existent. There was zero proactive communication. I had to initiate every update. Labor Inconsistency: They utilized a single-person crew for weeks. When the project stalled, a second, "clueless" crew was sent from another division who lacked the site-specific knowledge to finish the job. Management Arrogance: When issues were escalated to the Sales Consultant, the San Antonio Director, and eventually the local franchise owner, the responses ranged from dismissive to outright rude. At one point, checking on the progress in my own home was treated as a "disturbance" to the crew. The Result: The project was never officially signed off. We finally stopped pursuing them out of sheer exhaustion despite small alignment gaps and unfinished details still remaining. Summary: Do not be deceived by the high-end marketing. This company lacks the internal infrastructure to manage mid-range projects and shows a complete lack of respect for the customer's time or home. If you expect accountability or professional communication, look elsewhere. read more

Leah with California Closets is the best. She came in a took our design and drew it up. She called us later that day and said "We can do better!" She was so right. Easily the best experience we could've imagined having! Kimberly (sales) and Kyle (install) were fantastic to work with. From our first day visiting the show room and meeting with Kimberly to the last day of Kyle coming to wrap up over a weekend to ensure we hit our time deadline, the team worked as efficiently as possible to make sure we got the best quality product for the price. The crazy attention to detail was great. Kimberly met with us a few times to ensure she was designing the most functional spaces for our lifestyle while keeping it within our budget. We had them do 2 walk-in closets, a sit down vanity, 2 home offices, and a 12' media console. Even the smallest knick or scratch in the cabinet at time of install was caught by the lead installer, Kyle, and sent back to their warehouse to be remade same day. Attention to detail 15/10! Cannot wait to work with this team again! read more

We have run the gambit of terrible construction experiences, resulting in being highly involved in the process and very particular with our expectations of the work. California Closets not only met our expectations, but they exceeded them. We started with a simple window seat / built in storage project and since added a massive walk-in, a kid's room closet, and next up is a media cabinet / built-in. * Designer (Amanda) was at our home within 2 days from our fist call, and we had plans and pricing within 24 hours. Amanda is highly talented and creative and her measurements and build out were spot on. She's also lovely to work with -- she listens, she provides her POV, and she's highly collaborative. * Our installer (Vivian) was a breath of fresh air. He takes pride in and is meticulous with his work. The install of three massive structures were completed in 5 days with Vivian working solo. He's fast, but impeccable. And just a joy to have in our home. * The scheduling team was communicative and friendly and I wish I could recall her name-- she's deserves recognition for job well done! She has stayed on top of all the moving parts and communicates/schedules when we will have them. She also remembers that we prefer Vivian for our projects and works around his schedule. NOTE: You have to wait about 2 months between the design and the install. Some of what we selected was custom so you have to wait on some of those components. Plus, they are busy with other installs which is always a good sign. We had the major parts install while waiting on a couple of custom doors. Custom doors came in about 6 weeks later. BUT, they just got their own building capabilities so this should shorten the time. We loved getting a chance to meet the team and work with them. 100% recommend! read more

Terrible experience. I am so very disappointed. I wish I had gone with any other company, as there are many local companies who will do a much better job at a fraction of the cost! We had a wardrobe installed. We thought it might add value to our home to have a custom California closet, but more importantly we did this for to improve our own lives and organization. It has taken value away from daily life. First, it looks exactly like ikea. Ikea actually would have been better because at least it can be modified and upgraded. Second, the design is not functional in the space. Any upgrades or modifications to the existing installation would cost much more money of course. We would have to modify our home and move walls in order to make this work. Additionally, the staff is very pushy and also pretentious. They will compliment and praise you all day when you walk in to the store, promise extras and discounts and faster turnarounds to get you to agree to things. They moved our dates 3 different times. I could say more, but this should be sufficient in warning others not to fall for this scam company. read more

What started out as an exciting project ended up being a disappointing experience overall. My designer, Amanda, really took my thoughts and ideas about my closet needs into consideration and that was reflected in the designs she came up with, which I did really like. I had California Closets design 3 closet spaces for me: a spare bedroom would become a walk-in closet/dressing room; a second closet would be used as storage for gym items; and the 3rd was for the laundry room for just over $20K total. While there was a 3-month lag between when we finalized plans and the installation, I actually wasn't really sweating that although I did wish things could happen sooner. What was terrible and inexcusable, was the overall LACK OF COMMUNICATION or PROJECT MANAGEMENT. Days before the install, *I* had to contact customer service to find out where things stood. There was never any kind of update on the status of all the parts for my order; never any communication around what to expect and what I needed to do in order to prepare for the install, etc. Just crickets. I had also asked if there was any way my installation could happen sooner and no one ever got back to me about it, which is completely unprofessional. Let customers know where things stand! Get back to us when we have questions! Assure us that things are moving and you're on it; this ensures trust. They did, however, consistently collect their payments. On the day of install, several shelves were missing from the laundry closet unit; the wrong knobs for the dressing room were replaced, and several other items were missing. Even after expressing my disappointment, California Closets has not once offered to make things right, instead, continuing to charge my credit card even though the project is obviously still not complete. And get this: I actually asked Amanda to add 1 extra jewelry tray and a rep BLEW MY PHONE UP 3x to "collect payment." Are you kidding me? That tray is $175 and I'm paying you guys $20K. You really couldn't just offer it to me for free given the experience I've had? And is it really necessary to blow me up about $175? I haven't even gotten the tray yet -- you guys still owe me shelves, knobs, etc. What I did like: * The designs Amanda came up with wonderful *The guys who installed were awesome and worked hard to get things completed read more

Built-in bookshelves with bottom cabinets project took over 2 1/2 months longer than quoted to complete: Incorrect colors were brought at the first installation date, along with missing cabinet fronts. At the second installation date to fix the color issue (white molding was brought initially instead of the black to match the rest of the design), the cabinet fronts were still missing. It took me emailing over and over for weeks to get clarity on when the project would be finished; each time there was about a week in between my email and a response by the customer service rep. I finally decided to call customer service directly and was told not to do that moving forward and to just stick to email. Our installation was completed on October 30th, well over 2 months after the original installation date scheduled for August 22. The remaining balance was immediately charged with no apology or small discount or anything offered to account for the massive delay in completion. I will say our designer Kimberly Woytek was lovely. The issues we had were outside her control and yet she still tried to advocate for us. We won't be using California Closets again, but she is not the reason why. read more

Paid 1/2 of the payment (15k) in Feb for a closet project. Install began in June and paid in full (another 15k). How so very foolish of me. Amanda (the closet designer) had the electrician install the new electrical plug in the wrong place. They said it would take 3-5 days to install. Took 6 days and then they said they didn't have all the items to install due to supply chain issues. They didn't get back here until August. They send out a new technician each time and not with the correct things to install. It's now August 31st and they have to send out people 3 more times before the job is completed. Their customer service is abysmal. They couldn't care less. They quit contacting me as soon as the payment was received in full. I must contact them if I expect to have any communication. To make up for their mistake, Stacy offered me 2 out of 4 fixtures to add to the closet. It would have been a nice gesture if 2 of the 4 hadn't already been purchased and weren't already installed. Later I found out that the hide away mirror that Amanda had suggested for the project wasn't on the order. So as a token of their apology they decided to give me the mirror at no extra charge. The first guy came and didn't have it with him and installed the Maddox wall organizer at a slant. The 2nd guy came out and said he couldn't fix it that the dry wall needed to be repaired. The mirror he had wasn't a mirror but rather a counter top. They are sending out another guy today and have I been informed there will be 2 additional visits before the project is completed. Expect great customer service upfront and then it will turn. I never could have imagine spending 30k would provide such a disappointing experience. Their last response to me on the phone is that sometimes it takes 2-3 visits. I informed her it's been over 10 to which she responded it is what it is. read more

I was overwhelmed by all the targeted ads for custom closets when we were first considering the project. I reached out to California closets for an initial estimate and Leah showed up a little early for our appointment and worked diligently to ensure everything we wanted for within our budget. She's responsive, professional, and a huge reason why we chose California Closets. read more

We have had a horrible experience with California Closets. Terrible communication, significant delays without any follow up from the company, facts misrepresented. They installed a half completed project without telling us they didn't have any of the doors, and things just got worse from there. Disappointed with California Closets: Misleading Quotes, Inconsistency, and Unprofessional Service. My experience with California Closets was far below expectations. The business is franchised and your experience may vary based on your location. Misleading Quotes: The initial consultation and quote seemed reasonable. However, upon further discussion and after finalizing the design, the price changed twice with zero explanation why it changed. Inconsistency: The sales representative provided conflicting information throughout the process. Rude Practices: The sales rep displayed unprofessional behavior. This included claiming that "this isn't a used mattress store" when asked about pricing discounts. Her dismissive comments and lack of listening skills were painful to sit through. Conclusion There are plenty of highly-skilled master carpenters and craftsmen throughout Austin who can provide a higher quality of service and a product at a fraction of the cost. read more

Terrible experience. I liked our designer Mariana and she did a great job coming up with a design and concept we liked, but the execution/install was pitiful. Excuse after excuse - my $40,000 project still isn't complete and it was supposed to be finished 4 weeks ago (after they had already worked for ten days, they needed more time because their installers were only here for about 2 hours a day). I had to deal with 15 days of my house in complete disarray and SO MUCH NOISE. I have a toddler and a newborn so that was really hard. They left tools and screws on the floor at night and on the weekends - SO DANGEROUS for my kids. I couldn't believe it. I reported this to Jean Tracy and spoke to her a couple of times - she seemed to really care and want to help, but I was so disappointed because nothing changed. In fact, the next day they only sent one guy and he was here from 11am-2pm...nothing seemed to get done! Very frustrating. And like I said, my project is still not complete and it's been almost a month since I've seen or heard from anyone. Unbelievable. The other thing I'll add is I've done projects like this in 2 other houses with local companies and it took a fraction of the time, was very organized, and was COMPLETED on time. One of those massive projects was also during the Covid era in Northern California (where things were REALLY shut down), so I'm not sure I buy that excuse. My husband's $12,000 wardrobe is still missing a hamper and my desk looks pretty ghetto with no backsplash. I wish I could say the product was totally worth the hassle but I'm not sure it is. read more

These guys are a scam. Please avoid California closets. I ordered a closet with them. After a multi-month wait they partially installed my closet in Jan. They said they'll come back and finish it. It is May now, no one would care to return my messages. I have a closet waiting to be finished for 4 months with no end in sight and no one even caring to respond. Please read this review if you are considering hiring California Closets or its sister company Lavish. We have used them in New York and Texas for multiple bedroom closets, master closets, and bathrooms. What they do well: 1. Design. The studio and the employees are very well trained in design and being able to create a mock up to help you visualize what your closest or vanity will look like. The design options has greatly improved over the years and they now look much more custom vs IKEA assembled. California Closet used to really financially make sense when custom is just unaffordable but now there is competition and you should check it out. Lavish is totally not worth the price. 2. Fast Install. On the day of install, if its simple design, it will go fast and is generally pretty clean process. Tip: be 100% ready for them. They will not do anything to fix the room. What May or May Not Go Well. 1. Install. Complicated installs do not go well. They don't arrive with all the parts, pieces are backordered. Simple, straightforward, one day installs are fine. But if you are doing a master closet or bathroom then be prepared for delays. 2. Crew Training. Each time a crew returns to complete work, its a different person. They are not well trained and the install quality can be hit or miss. The more complex the job the greater the problem. 3. Communication. There is not good communication between operations support. When something goes wrong its a nightmare. The crews don't have a leader that can make something happen, they just show up and assemble the pieces they have been given. If they don't have it then its up to you to recontact your sales person and make it happen. Its like there is no middle layer to address problems. 4. The Details. Pay attention and think about the details. Really focus on door swings. Focus on where their baseboard trim stops and yours starts. They did something really goofy with baseboards as they only think about their closet and not the whole master closet. The horizontal opening doors seem to have magnets but then install team doesn't put them on. Then its a whole thing to get the magnets and event then they say "which doors do you want them on". Its like every door that you show in your studio that should have them. 5. Product Quality. California Closest is pretty good on product quality. BUT LAVISH, OMG, terrible. Quality of drawers and doors were so bad we made them redo it. Getting Lavish doors to hang straight and close in alignment is a nightmare. What will not go well. 1. Service and Repairs. I guarantee this will not go well after you have had the closets for several years. They expect you to list the needed parts before the tech arrives. They actually want you to pay for the parts before they arrive. It takes forever to get the tech scheduled to arrive. But here is the kicker. They change the slides and brackets ALLLLL THE TIMEEEE. So what was installed is no longer used. They need to have a service truck stocked with the various hinges, brackets, slides and screws that can be used to fix this stuff. Equip the repairman to figure it out and fix it in one trip. This idea of how many screws and which slides is nonsense as we arent even sure which part is broken. read more

DO NOT USE THEM! What started out as an exciting experience has turned out so very disappointing. I started this project in Oct 2022 and after several empty promises, lack of communication, an incomplete install, and much frustration, my project is STILL NOT DONE! I'm now approaching month 8, and I'm still getting "vendor delay" answers. The customer relation representative explained that production issues are out of their control and therefore, impacts their install. I then replied it's one thing to offer production issues as the explanation but that doesn't cover the very poor, apathetic customer service/communication that has been given. I've had a closet install done, at a previous house of mine, with Closets by Design. Their creative consult/install/execution/customer service is amazing and NOW I know better to ever use Cali Closets again. Sincerely, the worst experience. read more

My family has so much usable storage space now rather than the dead space we had before. I'm still amazed when I walk into my closet and see all of the shelves, drawers, and hanging spaces that weren't there before! I don't regret a single penny or going with this company although many people encouraged me to find cheaper companies. They say, you get what you pay for and I wanted work that would last. I chose to go with a company that prides themselves in providing quality craftsmanship and unmatched customer service! My consultant, Raquel was from the San Antonio Design Studio and assisted me whenever I had a question and was super helpful from beginning to end. She made sure all of my materials matched my vision AND budget without being pushy or condescending! I recommend California Closets to any and everybody looking to upgrade that ugly little rod and shelf combo that seems to be standard in most closets. Nope. i will give this company not one red cent. After trying to submit an inquiry online (with my name address, and a description of the project online), the scheduling tool would not allow me to make an appointment. I clicked have someone call me instead. This was a Wednesday. I immediately received rapid fire text messages, asking me for my address (which made me uncomfortable), and also several phone calls, and two emails also asking me for information I had already submitted. I expressed frustration with the aggressive pursuit (from Cassandra, Jean and Clara) and concern that the left hand has no idea what the right hand was doing, but i again provided my address and a description of the project via email. I asked for an appointment for about 10 days later. Jean Tracy responded that she would book it, but she again, needed my address and a description of the project. i did not hear back. Over the weekend I received voicemails from Cassandra and Clara to follow up on booking the appointment (that I believed had been booked). When I returned their phone calls, I reached Jean Tracy. Who, AGAIN asked me for my address and a description of the project. I again expressed frustration that I had left that information in the voice mail i left earlier today, AS WELL AS via email to her on Friday, AND had provided it on the website last wednesday. Jean Tracy then presumably reviewed notes and my email expressing concern, and said, "honey, if you aren't comfortable with our level of service why don't you find another closet company." and THEN SHE HUNG UP ON ME. that's $10,000 with a potential of another $15k for another room that Jean Tracy lost for California closets. They obviously need the work given the number of people they have chasing potential clients. read more

If you like dope smokers this is the company for you. California Closets came to my home in January 2021 to draw up plans for an office space. I was told it would take about 8 weeks to get the office space installed. The first installer arrived in April and installed everything but one part of the space. While here he was smoking dope as witnessed by myself and one other individual. He said he would return and finish it but never returned. I called the company and they sent a second installer who measured and never returned. I called CC again and they sent a third installer who measured and never returned. It is now August and I called again only to realize that everyone had been let go except the installer manager who came out and measured. By this time the whole unit had pulled away from the wall. The installer manager came out and fixed the job and it is now September. I have attempted to call the owner of CC in Austin, Mr. Daniel Siegel multiple times and left multiple messages and have not heard from him. I am making the assumption he does not care what kind of customer service he renders since he has chosen not to communicate. Shame on you California Closets...you do not deserve to be in business. read more
