I have bought several closets at different homes from California Closets I had a lock installed in my jewelry drawer that I could not get open and called the office and they tried to talk me through getting it open but lock was completely damaged. I needed a new lock to be installed. They WOULD NOT EVEN CONSIDER fixing this for me but wanted to charge over $400 dollars to do it. I asked if I could pay for the new lock and if they could not charge me another $200 to come and install it. UNACCEPTABLE, I've spent well over )10,000 dollars on closets. Would never recommend this company to anyone! They do not stand by their work. Plenty of other closet companies out there. Pick one! read more

Wonderful experience starting with our consultant Shellie who patiently walked me through a series of designs until I found the right one. Charlie is a very talented painter and gets right to the job. Our installation professional, Raphael, was very skilled, friendly and honest about some glitches that cropped up along the way. The glitches were resolved right away without any attempts to dodge responsibility. I love the closet I now have and highly recommend these folks for anyone looking to improve their home. read more

Update 7/27: No update. No one reached out or responded to my email or text. Business more concerned about responding in public and defending image than actually solving problems. Honest mistakes happen. No big issue. Lack of accountability is deafening. Original review 7/26 (shortened to comply with review length): Designs were good but implementation and client service leave much to be desired. We hired them for 5 areas in our home and it was a 3-day installation. Multiple issues arose that could've been avoided. One panel in a closet island was not placed correctly and as a result, is not flush with the rest of the island, with a corner sticking out. This should've been an easy mistake to catch, had any of the installers done a quick quality check of the piece after it was competed. Apparently they were too flustered as this piece was completed on the very last day and they were supposed to depart at 2:30pm every day, but had to stay until close to 3pm on the last day (and it was a Friday). Apparently no one bothered to do a necessary quality check. On our media center wall, the installers made a mistake and originally tried to install a floating shelf on a spot that was lower than where it should've been. Of course, they did have all the designs with precise dimensions so this should've never happened. This mistake left a very visible and ugly mark that's unfortunately centered right above the TV. Remarkably, when we asked about this and they told us what'd happened, and even one week later now, not a single person from the company ever apologized or showed any vestige of accountability. We do live in a two-story walk-up and they had to carry long panels up the stairs. Unfortunately they scratched the wall by the stairs at one point. Then, they scratched paint in two small areas at the bottom of the closet they installed. Our installation was Wednesday through Friday. The Friday afternoon prior I called the designer for some questions and was then informed a few doors in our project wouldn't arrive on time so they'd need to come back at a later date to put those on. Apparently I was "on her list of people to call" that day so I would be informed. Shall we say that would've been... quite a funny coincidence? If I hadn't called myself probably they wouldn't have bothered to inform me and we would've had the even more last minute nasty surprise that the entirety of our project would be delayed indefinitely. We sourced handles and knobs ourselves and had to drop them off at their office beforehand. They demanded that we drop them off 2 months prior to the installation date because it was critical to measure them for the glass doors. Come to find out, more than 2 months later and the doors are nowhere near being ready. It made zero sense to begin with since all the dimensions of the handles are clearly spelt out on the product's page online. Secondly, the installers gave us back those very handles and they were never even unpacked. So they made us go through the trouble of driving an hour to their office to drop those off 2 months in advance for no apparent reason. One thing about dropping off parts with them: please make sure they do a count with you in person and get it recorded. I'm positive they lost one of our handles. I bought everything in one go for the first batch from Home Depot and still have the receipt so I know I'm not crazy. When the order was delivered to our home we made sure everything in the order was there, then literally put them all in a bag and drove to their office with it, so there's no way a 16" handle could've gone missing before it got there. It's a big piece and not easy to lose. We dropped off 2 batches of parts with them and both times the person just took the bag without looking at the contents before putting it in the back. If they say something is missing later on, you'd have no proof. Another strange thing was they told us we were missing one knob and just needed to have it ready on installation date. So we did. However, all 3 days went by and the installers never asked for the knob. We assumed they'd just ask us for it when needed. But the days came and went and no one said a thing. We realized this after they left, and somehow they managed to complete all the pieces without it? Very strange. It's been 11 days since I found out - for myself, not that I was reached out to and informed - that the doors would be delayed. No one has contacted us to give an update for a date. It's been nearly a week since the media wall mistake transpired. No one proactively acknowledged the mistake, let alone apologized or showed any signs of accountability and goodwill to make it right. Now we have a glaring eyesore right above the TV that's impossible not to look at. On the contrary, they were very quick and efficient to request 90% of total payment immediately after the *incomplete* installation. read more

This could easily have been a glowing review... We were thrilled with the design and order phase, our design consultant Briana was absolutely terrific. And we are very happy with the closets themselves. So why two stars? As part of our home renovations, we had new hardwood flooring installed and had the existing hardwood floors refinished. The entire house has also been repainted. When the California Closets installation crew arrived, I explained that we had just had new hardwood flooring installed etc., so I was very concerned about avoiding any collateral damage. I was assured that they'd cover all surfaces and take all appropriate precautions. As I watched them cover our stairs, I assumed we were in good hands. A bit later as they took a break, I went upstairs to take a look at their initial progress and discovered: * Multiple tools, toolboxes, ladders, etc. sitting on our hardwood floors - with no protection - and in many cases those items also leaning unprotected against our newly painted walls and trim * Multiple piles of wood shelving (the closet components) standing on their unfinished edges on our unprotected hardwood floors, and also leaning unprotected against our newly painted walls and trim * Multiple pieces of shelving leaning against multiple pieces of our brand new and recently delivered bedroom and office furniture In the end, our new and previously pristine flooring suffered multiple abrasions and scratches. This was 100% avoidable, and I expect any modern contractor to take the necessary steps to protect a customer's home from damage incidental to their work. read more

The quality from start to finish for this California Closets team was exceptional, not to mention the added value these upgraded closets add to your life and to your resale uptick. Laura, my designer, was friendly, courteous and professional. She revised her original plans, making the final results even better. Joe and Jack, the installers, were terrific. They covered the floors, worked to bring the plans to life and cleaned up the areas after all was done. There is great value in having California Closets added to your home. We used California Closets for our son's nursery and were very happy. Also happy with the new foyer install - minus the one drawer that was designed to open into the hooks, according to designer's measurements; that the installer didn't notice when he installed it (we caught the error). However, we are sorely disappointed in the product delivery for the largest install of a bedroom (a big boy room with two closets). We chose Adriatic Mist, which looked gray on the sample. Unfortunately, it's appearance is beige in the room - which is painted a pure gray. Unfortunately, neither we nor the designer thought to view the sample in the actual room. I wrongly assumed gray would be gray and trusted my designer. We were told nothing can be done. Our designer talked to David, who spoke to Julie, and said it was customer error. That we own the product and if we don't want it installed then we can "have it piled up in a corner in our garage." And we can "pay for a new one." That "no one else has ever complained about this in 20 years" so we must be wrong. There is zero recourse for an unhappy (repeat) customer. We spent almost $3,000 on custom closets and our only option is to junk it; or live with it. Customer satisfaction is not guaranteed. Lesson learned. The install was a bit trying, as well. They sent one guy (very nice guy) for three closets on two floors. Installation took roughly seven hours. On a Saturday. They couldn't send two guys? We also had damage to our freshly painted walls and closets. And pencil marks left behind on the fresh paint. They have offered to repair or reimburse, which we will do, but that's still more time spent on this. Stick with basic white, use Elfa, or hire a carpenter if you want to color match with satisfaction. Avoid this branch of California Closets if you want to be treated respectfully should you voice concerns. And if you expect any effort to be made to make sure you're happy with your product - definitely go elsewhere. I wish this review could have been different since I do think our designs are smart and helpful. And we had two more closets to do next, which also had strong designs. But this was a trying experience, at best. A bit combative. And so expensive. read more

We recently worked with Debbie Royal, an associate of the Ridgewood location which announced recently that it's closing it's doors. Fortunately, Debbie is still with California Closets out of the Fairfield location. We couldn't say nicer things about our experience with her. She designed and facilitated the upgrades of 3 rooms in our house. First, the most space transforming built in cabinets in our family room. Changed the whole look of the room. Next, our home office needed storage and a good filing system as it's our workspace storing our personal documents and a trove of business paperwork as well. Working with our vision and needs, Debbie designed a system that is as functional as aesthetically pleasing. And finally, our master closet. Stripped down and painted one day, built into a dream the next. Service was professional but warm, measurements taken in the house were speedy but accurate, and Debbie's design advice reflected her own good taste and expertise as well as consideration of our input. The timeframe to construct and build offsite was set and kept, even through the quarantine. When the state deemed it safe and construction was allowed to resume, installation took just 2 days. The team wore masks in our house and work was done with care to protect our home and all the items they were working around. Bottom line, if you're considering using California Closets, feel confident that the product is excellent and if you're lucky enough to live in an area she serves, use Debbie Royal who will work to the highest standard and transform your home with as much care and attention as if it were her own. read more

You have one of the BEST employees I've ever had the pleasure of working with! I would dub myself a shopaholic. I have shopped all over the world and online. I am a true lover of clothing and shoes and wanted a space to house my favorite items. I have NEVER had such an exceptional customer service and sales experience before! First, the owner of the New Jersey store contacted me very promptly and connected me with Donna Infantolino for my design consult. Donna called me immediately after I hung up the phone with her boss and had my custom Martha Stewart closet designed within an hour of my initial call! She listened to all of my ideas and helped me make the best use of our space in our new home. Every single thing I wanted to accomplish, she made it happen. I cannot express how nice it was to have such an expert helping guide us through the design process. The closet is my favorite room in the house! It is functional and GORGEOUS! Every time I walk into the space I smile! I've never seen a prettier closet before to be honest! Donna was an absolute joy to work with! Any hiccups that came up, she took care of them and made us feel completely taken care of! She answered her emails, phone calls and texts promptly and kindly. She was very open and kept us updated on everything! Like I said, I've NEVER worked with someone as professional, kind, courteous, efficient, AND funny! We are so happy with our new closet system and our experience working with Linda. We were really nervous that our new closet was going to be too small (we actually debated expanding the entire closet and making it bigger, but decided to go with a closet system instead). We now have more than enough room for all our clothes and our system is perfect for our needs. We did the entire project remotely and Linda made it feel seamless. From our meeting with her via zoom to the mock-ups she provided to our very respectful installer who made sure we understood how the system worked and that we were happy before he left. We never felt pushed to get a fancier system (we ended up with one of the more basic systems) and Linda actually ensured that the design both fit our needs and came in under budget. It is definitely not cheap, but for something we use everyday we think it is worth it. read more

Everything was PERFECT from beginning to end. Allison was a dream to work with. She was thoughtful, creative and efficient. She was not at all "sales-y" and never pressured me. Even though we had the world's strangest issue (no fault of CC at all) after installation, it has already been resolved and we have only had our closet for 3 days!! Every home project should be this pleasant, fun and simple. UPDATE July 2018 What more can I say than my original review?! Initially, we had our master walk in closet done. We were so estatic with that, that we did our teen daughters teach in closet with bifold doors. Our final (sad) stint was 2 weeks ago when we excitedly did 3 more closets. 2 sliding door, reach ins and one more reach in with bifold doors. Each closet is designed slightly different, all specific to each child's needs. With 4 teenagers in our house, life gets very crowded and hectic. California Closets sure helped to make one small piece of our home pleasant, organized, dreamy and happy! Allison Pearce, our designer is an absolute GEM! She's a true listener, wonderful communicator and a masterful designer. ALL of our needs have been met because she is supremely skilled . Sean, our installer, is equally top notch He is friendly, very professional, efficient, respectful and highly skilled. Having Allison and Sean in my home was like having friends over for visits. I have recommended CC to my 2 sisters, a few friends and my mother. I cannot say enough to have about this company! Thank you everyone. I am sad my closets are completed and that my interactions are done. Maybe I will buy a new house to have more closets done! UPDATE: JUNE 2022 We actually did purchase a new home in March of 2021. One thing i did nearly immediately was to contact Alison again to design our new master reach in closets. I immediately learned that 1 closet (mine) was an unusual shallow depth when Alison came to measure. She told me it was at the bare minimum depth for a closet, recommended a design and we accepted. Fast forward to install day. When the closets were complete, I immediately hung my clothes up and quickly discovered that the rods were installed too close to the front of the closet, rather than the center. Meaning, my hangers were positioned too close to the closet door and therefore didn't fit behind the return on each side. I called right away and was met with a rude and abrupt install manager who was short and annoyed that I had a complaint. When Alison called, she too was rude and tried to justify the placement on the shallowness of the closet. I understood full well the closet was shallow (she pointed that out when measuring) but as a "professional " designer she should have take this into account and designed the unit for the rod to be installed in the exact middle of the space. She recommended I buy all new, space saving hangers or not use the approx 18inches of return space. I expressed my displeasure and eventually a tech came back to adjust and move the rods to where everything now fits just perfectly. I hesitated updating this review for over a year because I had been so happy with my previous experience. However, after being inundated with emails from CC asking me to update my review based on my most recent experience, I decided to update. My most recent experience has soured my opinion and I no longer recommend CC. They are rote & robotic and only good at designing perfect spaces and lack the ability to determine unique situations read more

Debbie Royal, my consultant, took her time to study both my home and gain a sense of my style and direction and made strong recommendations (paint, hardware, carpets, and material) to help me realize the vision. Mike and John, the installation team, were so good from start to finish when it was showtime. They made for a clean install and provided all of the information that I would need to make sure that I got the most of the closets. They were prompt, courteous, and obviously engaged in their work and representation of the company. California Closets came highly recommended from my mother who has used the company for over twenty years. The entire process went smoothly until the end. I was not satisfied with the end result with all the peg holes exposed. I misunderstood the designer and thought we were having closet doors installed, too. This would have solved the unfinished look of the peg holes. When I inquired via email, the designer responded that CC doesn't do doors (meanwhile it's clearly stated on their website that they do) and it was a misunderstanding and Doors were never in the plans. I explained that it was indeed miscommunication or a misunderstanding but I wouldn't have agreed to this design unless there were doors. I requested 15% discount from my $2,300 total ($345) since now I'd have to call a contractor to install doors. Not only did California Closets Fairfield not grant me the discount but I received an email that they charged my credit card for the balance without my authorization. I was told during the time of contract signing AND before the installer left that I would be contacted to decide how to take care of the balance. Less than two hours after my email saying I was dissatisfied and wanted a discount they charged my card! Yikes. Quick to take my money with no regard to customer service. If you go with this location of this company make your you cross your own Ts and dot your own i's and don't expect excellent customer service once the job is done. A huge company like this... We had California Closets in Fairfield design several closets for us in 1989. Recently one of the closets collapsed after 32 years of use. I noticed that there was a limited lifetime warranty on their closets. I called to describe what happened and i expected to find it was not covered for some reason. Actually, they never even questioned the warranty once they saw pictures. An installer came 3 days later, on a Saturday no less, and completely restored the closet. No fuss no muss no cost. It was a pleasure to work with California Closets & designer Linda McHale. I have a small to medium size bedroom walk-in closet & with the design suggestions from Linda, I am amazed that we are able to fit all items & then still have space for future additions. I was concerned that designing & cost aspects would make the project of revamping our closet space very stressful, but under Linda's care and guidance, it was quite the opposite. She let me focus on what I needed while she worried about the challenges. We were like a team and she worked on the design & would revert back with points until we had a design that made all of us happy. Her design suggestions have given me a closet that I will enjoy. She even understood our budget and worked with that from very onset. The building team also did an excellent job and I am very happy with the final result. I had California Closets come do a home office and 2 entertainment pieces. The office is outstanding and was pleased with the entertainment pieces. I was told they would make any repairs or adjustments free of charge. I called Fairfield and guess what they had no clue, salesperson no longer there. So I decided to do it myself and got an eye opener. The material was the cheapest and broke apart while I unscrewed it, hence their horror when I asked for repair. My advice have a good carpenter do it with quality wood and avoid these guys. read more

So I have a hard time leaving such a bad review on a family owned business but I feel it's necessary for the buyers out there. I would not recommended using California Closets for multiple reasons. Pros and cons below. Pros: Does maximize the space with efficient builds The field office did a few things to right their wrongs (the wrongs shouldn't have been to begin with so not sure this is a pro) Cons: The quality does not even warrant "good" When they built our piece the drawers did not align nor did the actual trim. (They'll blame that on the ceilings and floors which we measured and were only off by a quarter inch when their build was off by inches) They brought the wrong hardware which I had to replace on my own with stripped screws from their installer on the original. Lastly, we paid thousands and felt the overall quality was easily equal to a Lowes pop up you could have professionally installed for a quarter of the price. Wouldn't even think of recommending them to anyone. I feel bad I even have to leave a review like this as I never really do but I couldn't let this one go. And to Julie's reply, my husband was present for the walkthrough. In having the unit moved it is odd that there were no marks on the walls to show it was moved. Your company asked to saw my baseboard down to accommodate your mistake initially and I said no. So with moving it it was explained there would be marks in which your painter would have to come out. Oddly there were no marks so somehow the unit was not moved over and it fits. Strange! As for the handles I asked for chrome you brought satin nickel. That is again not my mistake so in regards to your reply good for you that you have those ratings, clearly that's how you get your business. Another thing I left out is that the handles were crooked and also one door had to be replaced before the unit was even complete due to an imperfection in the quality. Bottom line, you're paying for a name. At your prices you shouldn't need to utilize your customer service in the capacity you have. The issues should have never come up in the first place. An installer should be able to execute drawer alignment with their eyes closed. In short, take your business elsewhere as you can see it is not worth the aggravation for the money you are about to spend. read more

I had a great experience with California Closets. My designer, Ellen, was such a amazing designer- very efficient and had great ideas. My space was difficult as it is an old house and the closet had to be built around wood moldings, radiators, etc. It was not an easy job, but Ellen did a fantastic job. It was a bit over my budget, but worth every cent. The closet is gorgeous! I am so happy I went with this company and would certainly hire them again. The company is very professional and efficient. Recently moved into a newly renovated home which makes my 5th project with CA Closets -- specifically my Designer, Denise Ilavsky, and their top-notch installers, Ray & Jon. Each project has turned out better than the last. Since this is a 'tiny' house (only 518 sq ft), space is at a premium. Knowing this would involve extra planning, I contacted Denise long before I even closed & moved in. This gave her extra time to think outside the box and design a custom floor-to-ceiling wardrobe, office space with library shelving, storage and a full wine bar! Her designs are over-the-top and it's so much fun to be able to pick out every detail to match the space. Denise really has the ability to interpret my ideas & tastes while incorporating them into the reality of space limitations. She's done "huge" wall units & walk-ins for me where there was plenty of space; however, working in a 'tiny' environment has its own set of challenges. Her designs were over-the-top and their team pulled it off without a hitch. The entire CA Closet team is comprised of consummate professionals and I couldn't be more thrilled!!! read more

Horrible customer service. There were several problems with the closets after the installation, and getting them fixed has been extremely difficult and time consuming. The service department has a habit of ignoring phone messages and e-mails, taking long periods of time to get service visits scheduled, and not following up or through. The product is fine, but this store is not. read more
