The salads, the kebabs, the dips, the seafood... everything was first rate as was the service. Only dish that faltered (and we had 10 among four of us) was the moussaka. Terrific meal! They need to pay more attention to their Yelp listing - there's a full bar, excellent cocktails, and they take credit cards - despite the Yelp listing.

To me it looked the size of a starter. Hummus, baba ghanouj, and something called a rabbi salad I think. The birthday girl had heard good things, and we were but slaves to her will. :P This cosy Iranian restaurant is situated in Tradeston, a short walk from the squiggly footbridge that snakes across the river, so it's not too far away from town really. Iranian food is the way to go if you want to explore food from the middle east but aren't keen on spice. Food from this region typically carries more sweet and sour flavours with very little spice. It is rich and flavourful without being overpowering. Watch out for the portion sizes, because most food from the middle east (especially starters) is served with the intention of sharing among your fellow diners. My friends didn't believe me and ended up with HUGE starters which I ended up having to share. Oh, the hardship! :P The two starters we ordered were Mast-o Musir, a homemade yoghurt dip mixed with finely diced shallots and served with naan, and Kashk-e Bademjan, which is baked, crushed aubergine that has been slow cooked with garlic and herbs, topped with a sprinkling of crushed walnuts, sautéed chopped mint and a splash of kashk (a traditional Persian preserved yoghurt whey). Both where delicious! Although the Musir sounds simple, the understated flavour was spot on when paired with the sesame covered naan. And of course the Bademjan was just bursting with flavour. We ordered another naan to go with it. Interestingly, naan and other types of bread are very precious in Iran, which we didn't realise. So when we ordered two naan to share between us, not realising there was already a naan going to be served with a starter, the waiter informed us it would be too much. And he wasn't wrong. :) For the main, one of my friends ordered the spicy chicken kebab (not Iranian and not for sharing, but one of the few spicy foods on the menu... and it is SPICY). The birthday girl and I ordered Baghali Polo ba Mahiche, which is only available on the weekend. It is a dish of saffron rice cooked with fresh dill and hand peeled broad beans, served with a lamb shank that is slow cooked for 12 hours! You won't believe just how tender and tasty it is. It literally falls off the bone. And it's such a big dish that I couldn't finish it as well as have dessert! I know, I'm naughty. But the waitress packed it up for me to take away. I love it when a restaurant is prepared for such eventualities! There is an interesting array of desserts available some exotic and some UK staples, so I decided to try some saffron ice cream. It was so fragrant and punctuated with toasted pistachio nuts. Just to die for. The birthday girl opted for the café glacé which was basically a creamy coffee float, and my other friend picked her go-to dish - chocolate fudge cake. We ate our desserts REALLY slowly because we didn't want to go outside again. In fact, we were in the restaurant until closing time and the staff were sweet and courteous and never gave the impression they wanted us out. After we were done, we ordered a pot of mint tea, which was to be poured into glasses with saucers. The saucers are pretty deep, and I'm informed that because the glass keeps the tea so hot that traditionally people pour the tea into the saucer to drink it. All in, a cultural culinary adventure. Its actually like a mini museum with hundreds of wonderful and ancient looking Persian artefacts and paintings adoring the walls and bookshelves. I could spend hours looking at all the stuff, but its not the real reason why I come here. Of course, the real reason is for the sumptuous Persian food. Persian or Iranian food is famous for its kebabs and these guys do some of the meanest kebabs I've ever had the pleasure of eating. In fact Persia offer a plethora of wonderful kebabs, like minced lamb, lamb fillet, chicken, fish and prawn. The kebabs can come singly or in various combinations and with different marinades and seasoning's. If you are struggling on what to order I would totally recommend a mixed kebab which comes in portions for 2 or 4 people. The mixed kebab for 4 also includes succulent grilled lamb chops, about 8 other various kebabs and rice or naan. I'm not even a fan of lamb chops, but in Paradise they taste so good. For a price of £49 this is an outstanding bargain. For non kebab lover there are also the famous Persian stews. These are often very rich and fragrant made with interesting spices and citrus fruits for example. For vegetarians, these will be you main options. The starters are equally good. As some of you know I am a bit of an aubergine freak and the Mirza Ghasemi (Grilled aubergine, garlic, egg and tomato sauce) is outstanding and tastes brilliant with their freshly made naan bread. Another firm favourite of mine is the Olivieh Salad, which is deviliciously addictive. If you are an adventurous type you may well fancy a shot at some of the peculiar deserts. Although most are not really to my likin, take for instance the Falode (Noodles mixed with crushed ice, rose water and sugar, served with a slice of fresh lemon) or Fresh Carrot Juice and Ice Cream. They are pretty interesting but a bit odd for our western palate perhaps. The baklava is always a winner though and the portion size can feed a few. It's worthwhile mentioning that Persia doesn't serve alcohol which obviously keeps the cost of the meal down considerably. I've been visiting this place for years and the quality of food has always been excellent. Therefore, if you fancy a taste of heaven, I would definitely pick Paradise :)

I'd recently purchased a voucher for dinner, and tried to book a week ago for dinner on the weekend. They said they took email bookings, but the lack of response to my email suggests they don't. I called on Thursday to book for Saturday night, and it went to answering machine. I left a message, only for them to call back at 10pm that night. Now, I know that I go to bed relatively early, but phone calls at 10pm tend to panic me and think "family emergency!" which is not a pleasant feeling as you're drifting off to sleep. On Friday I called again, to return to the answering machine of doom. This time they called back at a more reasonable time, and I booked in for 6pm on Saturday. When we arrived the restaurant was pretty busy (3/4 full) with just one waitress. We were seated and enjoyed the atmosphere - this place is well decorated without being tacky. The service was friendly but I could see how rushed off their feet they were - a few more waitresses started around the time we arrived so I thought things would run smoothly. After we'd ordered, we sat chatting and having a pleasant time, until that moment that you look at your watch and ask "just how long have we been waiting now?" That, added to the fact that I was starving made the wait feel like an age (which it wasn't, but it was definitely more than 30 minutes from ordering til we got our starters). At one point, a waitress came to apologise which was nice - but perhaps some breads would have been more appreciated. Our starters arrived. Starters weren't part of the deal we'd got, but I always like to get something extra to see what the food is really like. I ordered basterma & egg - this was a rich, buttery dish of eggs (scrambled) with some really flavoursome cured meat through it, and some unknown spice. I really enjoyed it, although about 1/2 way through it was really too rich to eat any more of, so I just picked out the meat. It was also a little odd having scrambled eggs as a starter for dinner. Priced at £4.95 I also felt this was a little steep for the actual dish. Graeme H had the kofta (£5.95) which I enjoyed trying - not too dry as kofta can be, and with two delicious sauces to accompany. Quickly after we'd finished our starters, our mains arrived. The voucher was for one tagine per person, with flat breads and rice to share. The rice came in an impressive pyramid shape which I loved, and was cooked with vermicilli through it. Very tasty! I'd chosen the chicken and spinach tagine, only to be told that it wasn't ready yet. So I switched and ordered the chicken and potato. In hindsight, I should have asked to wait for the chicken and spinach as I'm sure it would have been ready by the time we came to eat anyway! Graeme had the curried beef tagine, which was the nicer of the two. I liked my tagine but there was a simplicity to it that didn't impress me. The flavours were ok, and the sauce was a little watery. I think if it had a punchier flavour I'd have enjoyed it more. Graeme's was a really nice rich flavour that meant I was dipping my bread and rice in his sauce although I didn't think it tasted right with mushroom through it. We had a quick look over the dessert menu, but decided it wasn't for us. I really wanted to love this place, as it's convenient for us and I like unusual cuisines. Unfortunately, the booking experience as well as the long wait for our food really tarnished my excitement. While I liked the food, I'm not sure that would tempt me back on its own.
