My bf surprised me with a calligraphy class and it was so much fun! Karen was very welcoming and was so great throughout the process of the class. She made sure everyone could write whatever letter we were on before moving on to the next set of letters. I loved that she went one on one with everyone to make sure we got it down and to answer any questions we had. She showed us how to write the letter if we didn't quite get it and gave us extra paper to practice for after as well. It was great we got to practice writing an envelope address which was fun and to see how much we learned that day. Her home was lovely, and it was so nice she had little snacks and mimosas for us during our halftime break. It was truly a nice experience and I can't wait to learn more on my own. Karen is such a sweetheart and wonderful teacher! I enjoyed her class and look forward to other classes in the future. I have been wanting to learn calligraphy for quite some time but was always intimidated by it. All my fears have left and I am ready to just practice practice practice. Karen provides a unique calligraphy pen and a folder of everything you need to practice all your lettering at home after her class. For 3 hours we practice all the different letters in upper, lower case letters and numbers. I took Karen's class a few weeks ago. Her home is really nice, and she provides a great assortment of food (and mimosas!) which was really tasty. She's very nice and has great stories about her time living in LA doing Calligraphy for people in Hollywood. But at the end of the class, I didn't really learn how to do calligraphy. I felt rushed to get through things (I might also be a slow learned and bad at calligraphy) - and didn't have a real sense of how some of this was different than just cursive. While we learned our letters, we never learned any numbers and we did not learn how to connect the letters to make words. For $125, I expected (maybe wrongly) to learn more than I did. If you really wanted to do calligraphy for something, I would recommend a more thorough class, as I don't think you'll learn that in this class. read more

I have taken several classes from Karen, and there is NO one better. Karen makes sure to give you one on one time, and you won't leave the beginner class without a basic working knowledge on how to do one type of calligraphy. Not to mention how relaxing and sweet her home is! You are in a calm and relaxing environment while learning, and you get to take home a booklet, pen, and usually a craft at the end of the class. Two friends and I attended this lovely class today. In addition to a yummy spread of food and mimosas, the home was welcoming with examples of Karen's work displayed. We each had a folder waiting for use with our names beautifully written on the front. Inside there were practice sheets and example sheets. Karen started us with a basic shape that would become the foundation of several letters. She demonstrated on her chalkboard so we could all see and then came to each of us for personalized attention. It was wonderful to learn all the capitals and lower case letters, and we even had time to learn how to address and envelope. We had a great time with Karen, who is knowledgeable and so helpful! We laughed and learned with gentle correction and guidance. I feel prepared to practice more on my own and I would definitely take another class with Karen. A Saturday morning well spent! read more

My husband found Karen on Yelp and gifted me a calligraphy class for Christmas. She was so booked up, he had to sign me up for a class in February. I was so excited, I had my best friend sign up too. Karen provides a lot of one on one attention because she keeps her class small. We learned so much and by the end of the class we all felt so much more confident and had improved. I'm not going to lie it was frustrating at first but in the end I was super happy. She had snacks and drinks available. I loved her energy and her expertise. I seriously wanted to learn calligraphy and this was one of the only options in the OC area with great reviews. Class: - It is a small class of 10 people. - Karen jumps right into it and goes through lower case, upper case, and numbers. - She is constantly checking everyone's sheets to make sure we grasp what the letters should look like. - We are provided all of the tools for the beginner class. Location/atmosphere: - The class takes place in her beautiful home. - There are delicious little treats, chocolates, tarts, cheeseboard items, and sparkling lemonade. I mostly appreciate that it was a no nonsense class. Folks are prepping for weddings or planning to use the skills in the future. Found Calligraphy to the Stars and I am so pleased. Karen, the instructor has a wonderful gift of calligraphy. Everything was supplied....even drinks and snacks. You get one on one attention and Karen will be sure that you do the letters the correct way. If not, you will do them again and again.....until it is right. I like that style of teaching. Karen saved my invitations. I had found Karen on Yelp and her pricing was great because I had 160+ invitations to address, we scheduled a week for her to address my invites because I had so many. I told her I would call her once my invitations came in. Then a huge snow storm happened on the east coast and my invitations were lost. After they found them they were damaged and had to be reprinted. By the time I received my invitations they were 3 weeks late and I had missed my scheduled week with Karen. However Karen said "Don't worry I will make time for you". Through the entire process she was an angel, she could tell how frustrated I was with the storm and print company and just kept reassuring me that as soon as she received my envelopes she would get to work. Due to my increasing desire to learn calligraphy, Johnathan S. did his due diligence, and after much research settled on Calligraphy for the Stars. He purchased a class for the both of us to attend this Saturday morning. Karen provided us a reminder email the night before with exact directions to avoid attendees getting lost, which was so sweet. Parking is plentiful, so no worries there. Johnathan and I arrived super early, because we thought the class started at 9 instead of 9:30, and Karen was so sweet and flexible and made us feel right at home. She set up the most amazing tablescape and provided us with delectable pumpkin treats, fruit, and cheese and meat platter along with lemonade, fresh pressed coffee and her own homemade pumpkin creamer. Karen is upbeat, creative, and patient and was able to wrangle 8 of us of varying degrees to produce beautiful calligraphy within 1 class. The amount of progress we all made was astonishing and just a testament to her teaching capabilities and skill. It was great getting to learn from her, and getting to meet: Jey, Paula, Suzie, Kayren, Maureen, and Josie. We had a great group and learned so much. The cost of her class includes practice sheets, 2 calligraphy pens, and tips and tricks from a professional! Karen was very professional and kind. She calligraphed our wedding invitations that came out stunning. I am a bride on a budget and she has one of the best prices around. I now see that there is a "check in" offer to receive 20% off - I wish she would have mentioned that to me as we even discussed the benefits of yelp for business. Also, I didn't catch it until we were stamping and stuffing the envelopes, but she would interchangeably use "no." "Number" and "#" for people's addresses, when I specifically asked her to follow my list of names/addresses exactly as I had them written - all spelled out, no abbreviations. I would advise to put extra emphasis on how you want things from her. Her turnaround was faster than even she estimated. I think I dropped them off on a Saturday and picked them up the following Thursday. read more

Adding on to the review from Trisha S., I was one of the lucky students to also attend Karen's Calligraphy class. After much research to find a class in Orange County area I finally discovered Karen's class through her web-sight on Friday evening! I emailed her to say I was sorry to have just found her thinking I missed my opportunity to attend her class the next morning as she limits her class to 8 so as to have enough time to help each and every student. She was so sweet and called me to say she still had one opening and if I wanted to come I was welcome. She texted and emailed me great directions and told me to come early to meet the others (we were all first timers!) and have some coffee/treats. Doing the class in her home/studio setting made it warm inviting and comfortable and she herself puts you at ease to learn and progress quickly. Also she showed us all where she does her calligraphy jobs and the set up for success which is not something you would get in a classroom. Instead she really wanted us to be successful and showed us as many "tricks of her trade". I have a new appreciation for calligraphers as it does require a lot of personal attention and practice. Not only did Karen's 3 hour class give us time for plenty of both, she sent us home with practice materials to continue to improve. Some of us expressed an interest for a follow up class so we can continue to improve and grow with her guided expertise and she was willing to open her schedule to another class on Thurs Nov 17 at 10AM. It will be for some of us returners as well as any first timers who want this great experience. I have always wanted to learn calligraphy but never had success with crafts and hobbies.
