This place was my go-to place when I lived in Madrid. The downtown location (C/ Señores de Luzon) was walking distance from home (I lived at Plaza del Cordon), prices were very fair, and quality was really great. This is a great place for tourists to Madrid who may not have the time or opportunity to get over to Barcelona/Catalonia. Can Punyetes offers a nice variety of primarily Catalan specialties at very reasonable prices. They grill most of the food (including the bread for the pan tumaca) over a real wood fire. I usually went with grilled quail, but everything was always good. They have a lot of great wine options, and you can try your hand at drinking from a porron. The best option on the dessert menu, in my opinion) was always the pastel de castanyas (a chocolate and chestnut pie), though of course they also serve an excellent crema catalana (like a crème brulee). If ever I return to Madrid, Can Punyetes will be my first stop.

When I found out I was coming to Madrid I had to book a table. First things first, my suggestion is book way in advance. This place fills up fast. My friend and I waited too long and the only seating we could get was at 11:15 PM. No big deal though there's plenty of places you can get a light snack in the surrounding area while exploring the city. Walking in, the architecture immediately hits you. Low ceilings, gorgeous old brick, tight dining rooms, it really feels like you stepped back in time. The whole atmosphere is elevated without being stiff. Staff was super friendly and made the experience feel smooth from start to finish. There's also apprently a really nice wine cellar at the bottom I overheard other patrons bragging about. Food wise, I will keep it real, it was good, just not my favorite meal in Madrid. The sangria was solid, definitely one of my highlights. The croquettes were fire. Crispy, creamy, exactly what you want. My friend's seafood casserole was actually really good too, I lowkey wish I went that route. Now the misses. The sautéed vegetables with Iberian ham didn't do it for me. The veggies needed seasoning bad, and the ham leaned a little too salty, so together it just felt off. The suckling pig, the signature dish, was good, but I was not blown away. If I find myself returning here, I would explore other options. After dinner, there was a little show and they let you keep a souvenir menu, which was a nice touch and made the night feel more memorable. Overall I had a solid 3.5 star experience rounded up to 4. Sobrino de Botín is history, it is iconic, and it is worth saying you have been. Just do not expect it to be the best meal of your trip. Hit Botín, soak it in, then go explore the rest of Madrid's food scene, because that is where things really start to shine.

The callos a la madrileña (aka tripas) was exactly what I was hoping for - tender honeycomb tripe in a paprika-rich, brick-red sauce with chunks of morcilla and chorizo you sop up with crusty bread. The tortilla came out thick and custardy in the middle, all potatoes and eggs, the classic bar version you want with a short pour of vermut, which we also ordered and drank with gusto. Nothing fancy, nothing overthought, just simple, beautiful Spanish bar food done right, in a place that's been making locals happy for generations. Cash only, so make sure you hit the ATM first.

The breakfast itself was disappointing. The Spanish tortilla was completely flavorless, just eggs and potatoes with no seasoning at all. The egg in the sandwich was raw, and when we asked if they could cook the egg a little more, they did, but were annoyed. Service was fairly quick, but the only thing we actually enjoyed was the freshly squeezed orange juice. I would not recommend this restaurant, at least not for breakfast. There are so many inexpensive and much better options nearby, this was a waste of money.

We had an amazing three course meal, were given and entire bottle of local white wine, and bottled water for €68, a bargain for the quality of the food and the location on the Plaza Mayor with a view of the entire square. I had the beans-judieos to start. They were hearty and perfect for a cold day. They came with a pigs ear, which I didn't try and some sausage that was flavorful and went well with the beans. My husband had a nice mixed salad that had tuna, the usual veggies, and olives-like a Nicoise-tasty. For my main course I had the suckling piglet. I had wanted to try this local delicacy without having to order an entire portion and this was the perfect compromise. Extremely tender, with a crunchy skin and potatoes on the side. I enjoyed it, and I'm so glad to have tried THE DISH of Segovia. My husband had the hake and was very pleased with it. For dessert I had the best rice pudding in the world. It was creamy, with a delicate orange flavor from orange peel, and a wonderful combination of cinnamon forward spices. It came with a scoop of ice cream which was good. I think they could lose the ice cream and serve more pudding, but I guess the ice cream would be nice on a hot day. My husband had the regional, marzipan heavy dessert and loved it. The wine was refreshing and the bottled water came in a beautiful blue bottle. On the whole 10/10. Great food at a reasonable price (given the quality). Primo location and good service.

When you walk in it seems like a typical narrow bar with some tapas behind glass. At the end you head downstairs and the into the restaurant. The restaurant is divided into several rooms with tables. It was amazing how we kept going and kept seeing more rooms. How big is this place? The walls covered with all sorts of stuff. Finally we entered the main dining area. Our group of 14 fit perfectly. El Ñeru specializes in traditional Asturian dishes (Asturias is in northwest Spain). One of those dishes is the Fabada asturiana, a white bean stew). This is what I got. Hearty and delicious. Perfect for two people. They also serve dishes from other regions of the country. My wife went with a traditional Madrid dish, the callos a la madrileña. Also, hearty and delicious. Both dishes are heavy, you're gonna want a nap afterwards. The rest of the group was satisfied with their orders. Zero complaints. My son tried his first asparagus and liked it. Other favorites were the croquetas, pulpo a la gallega, and the oxtail. This is a must try. I agree with the Yelper love.
