There are 2 lovely mosaic murals in the church that are just beautiful! One is of Father Damien who served the lepers banished to Molokai. Church dates to 1888 and as such, still retains most of the original architectural elements the French designers incorporated: proper narthex, nave, sanctuary, apex, and sited correctly "ad orientum" (facing east) so that the sun (symbolic of Christ) rises and illumines the altar where the Holy Sacrifice is re-presented at every Mass. Also contains the proper tabernacle and candelabrae so if desired, Mass in the Extraordinary Form could be offered/celebrated here. The altar is impressive and there are many other nice appointments that adorn the murae (walls) and ceiling. Many of the statues of saints date from the late 19th-20th century, and while the original stained glass appears to have been replaced by clear double paners, it doesn't detract from the majestic, and effectively lifts one's senses and thoughts to God (as is the whole purpose of church architecture) Lastly, we couldn't help but notice the outdoor replica of the 1858 holy grotto at Lourdes, France, reproduced with incredible detail. It was fitting that this be so prominently constructed near the front entrance as a nice reminder of the church's namesake. We were blessed to come here to worship with friends, so close to our lodgings. Actually got to talk with many parishioners including some who were born and raised on Oahu but relocated here. Oldest Catholic church on Kaua'i, circa 1840. Contains the original church structure (which is…read moreincredibly rare to see the original structure so well preserved) now used as a multi purpose area, and the "new" church built in 1889. The historic site also includes the original rectory, new rectory, and the original cemetery also from 1841. We arrived a few minutes before a lovely sunset and captured some amazing pictures. The church architecture is happily or was happily preserved from the ravages of post modernism. Therefore it still retained the form and beauty of a proper place of worship where the human senses are brought in alignment with contemplation of the Creator. This effect cannot and will never be achieved using current architectural designs that seem obliviously ok with building churches that look like basketball courts. Sic semper cum moderna. Cannot fully describe the joy we felt being here. Loved the coral-plaster columns, the Koa wood altar, and the antique built-in holy water fonts. The crucifix is exemplary and done in the French style. There is a surprising authentic statue dedicated to Our Lady of LaSallette and a very Hebraic themed statue of St Joseph, foster father of the Child Jesus. Spent a long time in prayer here. Tempus fugit... and time flew. Aside from the transcendent attributes, just walking around the site was edifying and peaceful. Highly recommend one visit this historic landmark if in the area. We are currently attending the morning and night sermons, as well as their bible studies that they offer. You can tell that the brothers there work hard to ensure that they were preaching the Gospel and teaching others to be more like Jesus. Everything is so similar to the King St. Church Of Christ in Las Vegas that we both got baptized at and we're glad to be around fellow brothers and sisters. Everyone is so welcoming and you can tell how loving they are towards all their visitors. They told us to fill out our information in the back and sister Lala even took a picture of us after service was over! Brother Mike made it feel like we were home away from home and even offered to grab some snack after bible study. It feels amazing to be connected with spiritual family miles away and getting to know everyone. My husband and I will be staying here in Kauai for 2 more weeks and are planning to attend all services. Thank you Kauai Church of Christ for making us feel loved. We love you all!
