There are 2 lovely mosaic murals in the church that are just beautiful! One is of Father Damien who served the lepers banished to Molokai. Beautiful warm welcoming parish church full of aloha, piety and tradition. Vibrant community and prayerful atmosphere. Church dates to 1888 and as such, still retains most of the original architectural elements the French designers incorporated: proper narthex, nave, sanctuary, apex, and sited correctly "ad orientum" (facing east) so that the sun (symbolic of Christ) rises and illumines the altar where the Holy Sacrifice is re-presented at every Mass. Also contains the proper tabernacle and candelabrae so if desired, Mass in the Extraordinary Form could be offered/celebrated here. The altar is impressive and there are many other nice appointments that adorn the murae (walls) and ceiling. Many of the statues of saints date from the late 19th-20th century, and while the original stained glass appears to have been replaced by clear double paners, it doesn't detract from the majestic, and effectively lifts one's senses and thoughts to God (as is the whole purpose of church architecture) Lastly, we couldn't help but notice the outdoor replica of the 1858 holy grotto at Lourdes, France, reproduced with incredible detail. It was fitting that this be so prominently constructed near the front entrance as a nice reminder of the church's namesake. We were blessed to come here to worship with friends, so close to our lodgings. Actually got to talk with many parishioners including some who were born and raised on Oahu but relocated here. We visited Hawaii for our 2018 summer family vacation, visiting the Big Island, Oahu, and Kauai. All were very nice and we had a great time. On Sunday, on Kauai, we celebrated Mass at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. ------------ This Church is dedicated to The Immaculate Conception, Mary, the mother of Jesus. When Our Lord's mother appeared to St. Bernadette in Lourdes, France, in 1858. When Bernadette asked Mary who she is, Mary replied "I am the Immaculate Conception." The Catholic Church has since shared that this title refers to the importance of Jesus' mother herself having been conceived without sin (by Saints Joachim and Ann (St. Ann)), and remaining sinless through God's grace (Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee...) through her life. ------------ Immaculate Conception Church is just past the hospital in Lihue. Mass was nice. The happy little toddler next to us made us smile a few times during Mass. Jesus loves us. The priest talked in his homily about the importance of being a family of God, all working together as a parish. Mass was good. :) ------------ After Mass, we captured photos of the Church and we met a lady who lives there and who also liked visiting St. Louis, and our Old Cathedral, many yards ago. ------------ We also enjoyed seeing the images in the back of Church. read more

Immaculate Conception Church - Churches Near Me - Lihue, Hawaii

Its location is easy to miss , there is a sign, though not a well-lit or large sign from the hi-way that points to it. Came here twice during my Kauai vacation, and on one occasion, there was a Eucharistic celebration (that is - NO PRIEST!) That disturbed me a little, since we already are aware that there are fewer priests all over the world in general, and this was a clear indication that we need more priests! Very welcoming congregation. They host a lot of tourists from mainland. An older building, with a lost of open side doors to let in the breezes. It was actually chilly enough for a sweater those mornings. Parking is spacious enough. read more

The minute we walked in a guy greeted us and gave us the song booklet. He probably noticed that we're not locals so he asked us if we want to do the offertory, which means we just have to carry the Ostia to the altar. I wanted to do it but my friends already said no (they have no idea what the heck he was talking about because they're not catholic) so we moved on and seated ourselves. There were a lot of singing from the choir while waiting for the mass to start with the Hawaiian touch incorporated in it. There were even a couple of local ladies who hula with some of the songs. Nice! Before the mass started, they asked the tourists to stand up so they can give each and everyone a welcome lei. Amazing experience! What a good way to start our last day in the island!. read more

Immaculate Conception Church - The ushers wear Hawaiian shirts!!! So cool and authentic - Churches Near Me - Lihue, Hawaii

I attended Immaculate Conception Church for a wedding back back in June. It is located off the main highway in Kauai. There aren't a lot of signs so it can be hard to miss; especially when flying down the one lane road. The church itself is very quaint with beautiful stained glass windows. It doesn't have air conditioning so it can get pretty hot. If there is a breeze it is not terrible. They have roosters on the property(much like the rest of Kauai) and the roosters kept crowing during the whole ceremony which was a bit distracting The bathrooms were basic. They were outside and very hot. But had runnig water and two stalls I have never been here for mass or service so I can't speak on that but it was a great place for my friends wedding and was close by to where the reception was being held as well as many restaurants and stores. read more

It was a wonderful service. As in previous reviews, the parishioners greeted us as a visitor very graciously giving us a lei. The music with the local Hawaiian flair was really exceptional. The day was warm and the widows were open with a delightful breeze coming through. The Priest gave a good Homily. The service was perfect and I would definitely go back the next time in Kauai. We chose Immaculate Conception Church in Lihue for our destination wedding. We chose it based on pictures we saw online, which were very beautiful, and when we saw the church in person it was even more beautiful! The church is decorated with fresh flowers once a week. We did not feel the need to add any additional flowers or decorations for our wedding, which helped to keep costs down. It is also worth mentioning that even at mid-day the church did not get too hot. Planning the wedding from afar was very easy as we worked with Deacon Dave. He was very laid back. We attended mass at ICC prior to our wedding, and we were completely embraced by members of the parish! It was comforting to feel like a part of the church family even though we were far from home. read more
