Hidden just off the main street of Marrickville up a few flights of stairs you walk in to a awesome bar with the roof painted with a huge Kama sutra mural and tin roof tiles and leather lounges. Licensed to 3am with great wines and boutique beers on tap.

It's a Jazz club with live acts every night, its a bar lounge. It's sophisticated dark and intimate. " Once you're inside Step back", says the purple haired door mistress with the voice activated LED t shirt, "and look up". Apparently painted by a famous Sydney artist, there is a huge mural on the ceiling. The place was pumping on Friday night. Jimmy Vargas and Mia Mortal (say it slowly... ) Vargas like a Brian Ferry look-a-like is apparently a self titled 'Croonoir' from San Francisco's cabaret. Mia Mortal has been sashaying the burlesque scene for the past 25 years. The show was a stunner. The Owner Craig was at the door when we walked in, he told us he'd moved up from Melbourne, and had been running clubs like Lazybones for years. He said "If it's not underground, I'm not interested" I liked his Moxie, and I had to concur. The hipster scene seems finally on it's knees with the clientele here being an over 30s crowd. I admit, I felt very relaxed. I even saw a member of a well known Sydney rock band here. If you want to stay ahead of the game? Say Hello to sophisticated class! Lazybones you're doing it right. $10 on the door gets you entry. Wine and Beer are priced reasonably, cocktails at $18 seemed a little pricey, but it looked like top shelf liquor. The menu, while I didnt try it, featured "Bunny Chow" with pick your own topping for around $12 as I recall. There were also Samosas and curries. It's very loud on a Friday night, Adults only. Good for date night or a chilled out trip into sin alley.

Booze brings us together. Wow. This place is very cool. The staff are rather boisterous which brings down to earth, what could easily be a very snobby little locale ( only because of the the high class booze and all those chesterfields and floor to ceiling bookshelves - sploosh) Not having a good sample to go by, this place seems a go to for girls nights, and the night I visited there was a medium sized group of ladies cutting loose and not caring who heard their hollerin. Wine is a gal's best friend and I watched as they palmed off a would be suitor with nothing more than a glance. Heros. Wine by the glass in big bowled wine glasses with a great selection, and Elvis who I presume is the owner, knows his tipples. My pick of the eve was the Alto Monte - $14 a glass but by George that wine is as delightful as a magical miniature new born fawn prancing across your tongue on a rainbow. Food is basically nibbles. Sharing platters: a cheese one, a meat and cheese one and a Vego one with Cashew cheese. Toasties including one with Brie, cranberry and Rabbit terrine. Delicious. Anyone can google the origin of the name of this place, and I think it does every justice to the moniker. I think this may become my regular hangout.

It's a little dirty, a bit tired and service is unpredictable. The terrace upstairs has the potential to be such an amazing place to hang out (and a great space for private functions) and the downstairs area is big, dark and condusive to romance (ahhh... memories....)... but overall Kuletos has lost some of the spark/energy that can be found in similar bars across Sydney. Despite the tiredness, this is a great bar to start your night (or spend your evening, if you're not having a big one). Grab some two-for-one cocktails, unwind with friends and transition into a more tipsy, carefree version of yourself. You'll have a good time, the drinks are great, it's got a nice vibe... but it could be so much more.

It is 3 levels separated by street art painted walls. The inside levels have some bar, stool and table seating, the atmosphere is quite closed up and dark. The upstairs level has picnic tables and a far view of the city and has a completely different feel compared to inside. Maybe it is the daylight drinking or my older eyes but it is showing some age, but still if I am in Newtown I will be grabbing a Toblerone.
