We did not have a reservation, but they fit us in as a walk-in at a small coffee table with 2 ottoman seats. Not the most comfortable set up, but I appreciate the cozy atmosphere, almost like you are sitting in someone's very posh and dimly lit den. All the NOLA classics were featured, like Vieux Carre (no likey), old fashioned (likey), and hurricane. There were some twists on the classics as well. I liked the newer house specialties, and ended up having 3 drinks, more than I intended. We snacked on some popcorn chicken, which was nothing special, but very satisfying when hungry. We were also lucky enough to be there when the live jazz band played a brief set, which really set the mood. I took off a star because not every drink was a homerun, and the service was a bit too impersonal for a speakeasy. We had a different server each time. One of my favorite parts of going to a speakeasy is to watch the bartenders work their magic and ask them for recommendations, and if I'm lucky, maybe get an off menu drink. Not quite set up that way here.

Not only do they have decent beers on tap, but it is also a live music venue, and the beer garden out the back is awesome. Okay, I didn't get to see a live gig here, namely because I ended up here during the day, and it is a bit of a trek from the city, but that means that it doesn't get anywhere near as packed as some of the other pubs. There is just this great vibe about this place, and really friendly staff, that I love, and if I was in Sydney, would make the effort to visit it more often. Oh, and I should mention, in place of poker machines, they have pinball and old style video games.

The menu in the beer garden / restaurant area out back is one page, but what a page it is. Our group was all over the Jerk Spiced Beef Shin burger with pineapple but for mine it was the Buttermilk Fried Chicken burger with crunchy slaw that won the day, biting into that crisp-coated but amazingly juicy chicken had me at hello, goodbye, and everything in between. You know what else is great about this place? They stock Stolen Rum, and the bartenders are friendly as your next-door neighbour ought to be. It feels like hanging with mates, it's the gold star for what bar service should be.

It's actually a pretty big space and they have a fabulous bar with boutique wine & beer and some intriguing looking cocktails. Loved the old rock'n'roll vinyls they were spinning. We chose a couple of chairs near the table that had been reserved for "Rebecca's Mum" - cute - and indulged in a bottle of shiraz and a cheese platter. The cheese was served up as it should be, on a wooden board at room temperature and consisted of a creamy blue castello, a cheddar, a double brie and quince and fruit and nut pastes, raisins and lavosh crackers. I could have eaten more but I always can with cheese, it was a decent sized serve for two and they didn't skimp on the crackers like so many places tend to! We were there at 7pm on a Thursday night and there were a handful of people but I got the distinct impression this place would get busy on weekend nights or after dinner, when normal people look for cheese! I'm sure they have other stuff there but I'm all about the cheese. Mmmm cheese....

I'm been here twice... thinking maybe the first time was just a quiet night. But no. The Green Room…read moreLounge is always dead. Could be because it's drinks are stupidly overpriced ($9 for a White Rabbit Dark Ale? WTF?) or maybe just because there are way better small bars on Enmore Road there days. They mainly book great Aussie blues, roots & jazz-type bands but mix it up with some cult cinema and the like. I have never ever seen a not-great gig on the Vanguard stage or even in their calender- true story! They do dinner & show packages and the dinner seating varies depending on the type of act that are playing, booking numbers etc - sometimes it's in front of the stage and sometimes up on the balcony. The sound here is really good no matter where you end up sitting, tickets are reasonably priced and I can't comment on the food because I've never tasted it. You're on your own there sorry! Drinks prices are a little on the high side but the service is good - we were unintentionally in the way of the bar & the woman we were bothering, instead of getting annoyed, graciously found us a table. The only reason I dropped a star was the drink prices. I would go here for the music every night if I could afford to! Oh and check their listings for business hours as they're not open every night - it varies.

(A violent yet skill involved metaphor.) The night goes as follows; I get to the Vanguard early and take a seat in one of the booths, only to discover that behind me in the near booth is my friend, looking quite different, but still recognisable and I join their table for a chat and to meet his band. They play their set and I watch on from the rear of the club standing with the family at the CD sales stand. A few CD's are bought and I drink of the wine. Next comes some Cabaret, a few strips and a lot of singing. The MC is tres hilarious and the music is great. I get my phone out and track down a few of the numbers for later listening activity. The night ends in further beers, additional chats and the purchase of a CD for my good self. Good shows, tasty wine and a food option. The view from upstairs is glorious, but interrupted briefly by a pair of lesbians ripping each others hair out and getting escorted by the security. The view from downstairs is great as well, but lacks lesbian lovers quarrelling.
