Douthat is my 35th Virginia State park visit. Saturday I hiked 13 miles, just under 30,000 steps! I ended up on trails that still had fog coverage! I started at Stony run and linked some trails together so I would circle back to the car. The trail started with ground rock, and after 7 creek crossings and some elevation, it turned into rocks and roots. Once I got up higher to the switchbacks, I'd been hiking two hours. It just kept going! At some places (Tuscarora point and Blue Suck) the path is on the edge of the mountain. If you trip, you're gone! I was happy to see each Route Marker Helped me to know my plan was working. Im going the right way. At one junction I asked Gemini the elevation I've claimed from Stony run trail head to the sign Im at right now. The answer was 1,740 feet. They had 2 waterfalls. I saw one on my way up and another on my way down. It was a tricke of water but it helped notate where I was on the map. From there, it was only were big large rocks to navigate for a good mile. Takes your energy away. I was so happy to see my car at the end! What an adventure. I did drive through the park before hiking and stopped at the camp store for a t-shirt for my grandson. I walked in shouted good morning. No response. Maybe she didn't hear me. I looked around and her younger, co worker came in. This woman started massive gossip about the girl who finally just quit. She dogged this girl the whole time I was there. Checked me out when buying my shirt and never said a word. I asked the younger girl if there was still a restaurant here and she was answering to say yes but its take out but that other woman snapped, "Its closed!" She needs to find happiness. Clearly she's not a happy person, at least, at work. I thanked the young girl and left. Super awesome park! I loved it! read more

How beautiful! You really can't find hidden gems like this anymore. Just nature, no cell signal, no emails, just for real peace and quiet. I stayed in Cabin 12, a two bedroom cabin on a little hill. It was far enough away from the other cabins to feel private, but within sight enough to feel safe. There were trails to hike or bike all over, strolled a few, but the frigid weather kept it 3 miles or less, so glad there were plenty of loop options. As we (the dog came along as usual) were there in winter, a lot was shut down for the season, but there was a restaurant, camp store, marina, and swim beach that I bet are pretty busy come summer! The lake is beautiful against the rolling mountains. Town is close by for groceries, and the Falling Spring Falls are a must see! Hit up Covington and Clifton Forge for supplies and other random things to do if you are interested in a low-key vacay! read more

We had seen signs for this state park while occasionally traveling along I-64 in western Virginia. While pressed a bit for time, we decided to check it out with an eye towards deciding whether it would be worth a future camping trip. Yes, it would be! The state park (4,545 acres) is nestled in the Allegheny Mountains. It had been a traditional family park since 1936, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for the role its design played in development of parks nationwide. The park features mountain scenery, stream fishing, a 50-acre stocked lake, sandy swimming beach, cabins and campsites (including some lake-side), and 43 miles of hiking. There's also a well-stocked camp store and small grill. We were pleasantly surprised by the prices. One tip: when you reach the state park, there is a parking area on the right along the stream, with signage. The MAIN entrance, near the lake, is an additional four miles up the road. read more

While visiting Virginia, there was many kayaking options to choose from. We chose this place because of the fact that we could take our furry babies along for the ride. We were not expecting to like it so much! The workers at the information center were super friendly and we only had to pay a small parking fee. There is a small "beach" area which was cool to see but the dogs were not allowed in. The prices for our kayak or boat was ONLY $10 per hour! We thought this was an amazing price and bought two hours. Our experience was amazing and the views were sooo amazing. We will definitely make an effort to come here again if we are ever in the area. If you are debating whether or not to come here, do it!! They have many things to do and even have a restaurant!! read more

We throughly enjoyed our time at Douthat. I have friends that swear by the park, so we wanted to give it a shot. We planned to spent time fishing on the lake and in the creek. The water was VERY low due to a lack of rain. The water wasn't deep enough in the creek except for by the bridge. Some had luck if they were on the water, but fishing from the shore didn't provide much luck (at least for us). We camped in our travel trailer at the Lakeside campground. It is our favorite being right on the water. We stayed in a non-specific site, but all will be specific next season. The campground is smaller than the other two, but still plenty of room for all sized campers and RVs. There is no cell service till you get back to Clifton Forge. There is wifi by the beach and the visitor center. Be prepared to put your electronics away and unplug. You won't regret it. read more

This is such a beautiful park and one of VA's original 6 state parks... We came here to pick a trail to hike and while buying our parking pass at the ranger's station, we were given some suggestions and a brochure with all their trails. We chose the Blue Suck Falls trail and it was a nice, easy hike (even though they list it as being difficult) to the falls. There's a neat bench made of stone up there too, and you'll know you've made it because you'll see the bench (the falls aren't much to see, so it's hard to know you're there simply because of them). We'd definitely come back next time we're in the area! read more

Interested in glamping or cabinning? Get in touch with nature and rough it out at Douthat park. It is best to go in group and book in advance. Cabin 1-9 sit across from the made lake. Cabin 21-24 are located by the stream with slopes. There are tiny cabin, one bedroom suite, two bedroom suite, and group houses. The cabin was clean and equipped with all kitchen amenities and utensils. Bring your own Pyrex and disposable plates and spoons. read more

A extremely nice place to visit. It can be tough to get reservations, so plan ahead if you can. We stayed at the Whispering Pines campground. Mostly the place is for people with RVs. Even so, we did fine with our tent (pads are gravel). Bathrooms and showers were top notch for a campground. Each site has power and electricity. Recommend sites 15, 16, etc or so if you want some shade and trees. We reserved site 3, not realizing it was basically an open field. The folks in charge allowed us to move, with no hassle. Fortunately, there were other spots available. read more

Very cool state park tucked into the George Washington National Forest area. This park offers everything from beautiful Hiking Trails to a large lake for Fishing and Boating. The Park also offers A few large campgrounds (one with horse stalls), and a large handful of cabins for rent. This is a great park for a family picnic or just a day out in the forest. Zero privacy, a problem with unleashed aggressive dogs, and group campers. We visited the Lakeside Campground in August 2015. The sites were disappointingly close together and the campground host (Don) did nothing to enforce the dog leash rule so my children and I were charged by one campsite's dogs as we walked on the paved road to the showers and a second unleashed large dog from another camp site growled at me on my own site when I tried to shoo it away after it wandered over (I had already seen this unleashed large dog growl at a little boy fishing so I didn't want this dog around my young children). After we had already set up our tent we had the misfortune of being surrounded by 5 families camping together on 5 different sites. These 5 families did not choose a group site (group sites are available at Douthat) but individual sites spread out over the campground. All weekend, they walked back and forth talking loudly to each other. Certainly not the fault of the park but something to be aware of when choosing the popular Lakeside campground over other campgrounds at Douthat. Unbelievably, the campground host was also having a party the weekend of our visit and he had a ton of visitors, too. Lakeside was just overcrowded. I would like Lakeside if it were less crowded and the campground host enforced the dog leash rule. Next time I will try another campground at Douthat or visit during the off season. The Douthat lake swimming was fun and the staff was friendly. The growling, charging, unleashed dogs soured the trip though. read more

Ahh. Douthat. This park is tucked in the mountains and we get no cellular service. Wifi is available at the beach complex, the restaurant, and the office so we can get our Internet fix. Douthat is perfect for families of any makeup. It is almost halfway between our family in Frankfort, Kentucky, and family in Virginia Beach (about 5 to 5 1/2 hours for each of us.) We take advantage of the trails, although they could use some updates on the marking and maps. Get a canoe and paddle the lake. We've never had any luck fishing, but the lake is stocked several times a year. Our kids have a good time working towards the Junior Ranger Badge each time we come here. The educational programs run all summer. The only trouble is finding the time to swim in the lovely lake when we are running all over doing programs. I'd tell anyone to camp Lakeside, but then there wouldn't be sites available for me! There are no hookups/electricity at the Lakeside, so pick from the other loops if you like air conditioning. The rustic cabins are perfect if you want a little bit of creature comforts, but be prepared for lumpy mattresses. Douthat is an annual tradition for our family that we hope to continue for many years. read more

Husband and I hiked all day long and didn't double cross our path. Excellent views of the lake and mountain range beyond. The waterfalls were more of a trickle, but the changing leaves made up for it. We didn't get to stay, but would have loved to try out one of the cabins. They looked well maintained and had a variety of sizes for different groups. Being from another state, we were very impressed with the low cost to get in, the quality facilities, and the great expansive trail network. VA parks do it right! read more

My wife and I went tent camping at the Beaver Dam (horse stall) area at Douthat this weekend. We normally rent a cabin but decided to try the tent. Had a wonderful time. Camp site clean as were the bathrooms. Douthat is our favorite state park. read more

This is a lovely park, but I have to express my frustration at the way they treated our Scout group. Apparently, an impending hurricane, a declaration of emergency by the Governor and the safety of a Scout group (that wished to drive home to the coast before flooding and tropical force winds) are not sufficient reasons to leave the park early without being charged for the unused night. Does anyone really think that we prevented the use of the site by someone who saw the hurricane coming and thought it would be a great night for camping? read more

Ok we love love LOVE this park and all the state parks we frequent. I do not currently have pets but this is the first time that is so because I always had dogs and cats until I got older. This weekend at Douthat we had to contend with dog/cat hair left behind from previous occupants. In the bed. In the sofa. In the dish strainer. I am ok with pets. I saw in the journal where someone recently brought their cat. Yeah. And another brought 3 dogs. It was a one room cabin. Cabin 22. I wasn't overly thrilled with the animal hair but it's still a great park. No internet but that's ok too . We didn't see but 2 deer and those weren't in the park. My favorite is Smith Mountain Lake. Keep on supporting our state parks. read more

We stayed in one of the cabins in the mid-season. A really nice park and the cabin amenities were good - try to get a cabin with a double bed if you're used to snuggling. The restaurant is only open during limited days and hours, so check that if you care about eating there. We had one meal and it wasn't that great - the bread was awesome but the rest of the meal was too chewy roast beef with instant mashed potatoes and overcooked vegetables. Service staff was good though. Very well kept up park and looks like a place we would go to again. read more

We love the White Oak Campground. We had not been for a while. The new bathrooms/showers are great. We tried to find the Ross Camp Trail but even after directions had no luck. The cabin sign shows hiking but we could not find a sign or tree posting anywhere. Earlier in the day we hiked Buck Hollow and the signage was very helpful. Also, it would be nice to have the menu of the restaurant and swimming hours in the sign-in package. read more

The lake is beautiful and so are the cabins. We had a party of six people fishing for trout. We all paid to fish at about 6:00 am and we were ready to catch fish, since they were telling us that the lake was being stocked twice a week all the way till June 15. What a disappointment, the last time I fished for trout was the week before at a lake that was stocked three weeks before and I caught my limit. Anyway I asked my brother to go fishing with us since it was being stocked twice a week I figured we would catch are limit and go home before noon. We fished for eight hours and not did we catch a trout, I did not even see a trout swimming in the water with polarized fishing sunglasses . Great place to walk, never fish here. I decided to give Douthat a second chance, and I did not see on our second day of fishing not one trout being caught. We started fishing at 6:30 am and fished for six hours with a bluegill being caught off power bait. If Douthat is stocking the lake as much as they say that they are, then they have to many large mouth bass eating all but a few of the trout being stocked. read more
