There are technically two different grounds for RVers and I was happy to be back in the farther grounds (less traffic noise from street and more privacy). It is lacking a few amenities. Although they are in the works, there are only port-a-potties around the campground and no laundry facility at this time. If long terming here, I would prefer to have at least a place to do laundry. If we are ever in the area, we will definitely stay here again!

The campground is famous for its sold out annual Bluegrass festival yet it is gaining attention for its powwow events. It was very easy to find the campground. We went to the Five River Campgrounds for the Third Annual Powwow in Parsons in June 2025. It was the most meaningful pow wow I ever experienced. The owners of the campground (Joyce & John) gave the sales of the tickets to the powwow to the MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) Memorial Grove. The non profit organization is involved in promoting awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. Some of the performers gave their earnings to MMIW Memorial Grove as well. The Five Rivers Campgrounds owners welcomed us with open arms and immediately noticed us as photographers. We do a lot of philanthropic work in photography yet we rarely get noticed or thanked by many people for it. The owners of the campground were selling tee shirts and stickers with our photography. We had given permission to have our photography used to the performer we have taken the photo of and we were happy to see that he & the owners of the campground were displaying our photography on tee shirts and stickers in the campground shop. The campgrounds are beautiful with views of the mountain. Immediately staff helped us park and alerted us of the speed limit on the campgrounds. The powwow was held outdoors and there was an open air arena with a roof to provide shade. The stage in the venue had a shelter and a good view. You had to provide your own seating, yet we knew that beforehand. The fee for the pow wow was $10 for two days, and we captured the most memorable and beautiful photos we ever took on those days of performers in regalia against green foliage and the mountains. The powwow was small yet the amazing camaraderie and performers were unforgettable. This was one of the finest powwow venues in ambiance, performance, connections, and professionalism we ever experienced.

We got to this park in the middle of the night, and had everything all pre-arranged with the office (including payment). When we got here, the roads were a bit narrow, but, even in the blizzard conditions, we were able to make our way (albeit very slowly) back to our lot. Once we got there, the pad itself is completely paved, and relatively level. The width of the pad is the exact width of our bus, therefore, you need to have a bit of driving skills to maneuver around here. We got one of the 50 amp sites (only 6 on property) and had a great view of the lodge and resort through our main windows. In addition, we have seen a law enforcement officer, plow truck, and one or two park vehicles drive by since we have been here. Oh yeah, we are the only people here now. One thing I will say about the park. The spots are not all that long, and there is really no reason for that. There is plenty of space at the end of the paved pad to continue on for 20-25 additional feet. I am not sure why they do not do that. Anyhow, on to the resort. The resort is a short walk across a beautiful foot bridge that extends over the water that surrounds the campground. When we got over there, we went to go book our spa appointments, and take a look at the indoor pool. You can read my other review on the resort for more information for that resort. Suffice it to say, that NOT ALL AMENITIES at the resort are included with the price of admission to the campground. During the winter months, it is $8 a day for up to four people to use the indoor / outdoor pool and hottubs. This is just a nuisance fee that truly serves no purpose. Just ask before you assume here. The rate during the summer is $15 a day for four people to use the pool or hottubs. The campground has beautiful amenities, and is really a nice place to stay and relax. During the summer months, the trees would be in full bloom, and would allow you to take advantage of the fire ring and nice gravel picnic areas on each site. This is definitely a place we will be coming back to.

The tent sites are a short walk from the bath house, and are located right on the lake. The sites provide a raised wooden platform for your tent as well as a picnic table and fire pit. The park doesn't allow outside firewood but you can purchase small bundles (6-7 pieces) for a little over $7. Lots of wildlife to see, and the fishing is good. Our family will be back!

I camped at Kumbrabow State Forest mid April while attending a Ramp Festival in Pickens, WV…read more Kumbrabow is a jewel! Tons of hiking trails, trout fishing, gun and archery range, and home of the Bowers CCC Camp. The staff at Kumbrabow was helpful and attentive from the time I called to get information to while I was there. Kumbrabow has tent/RV camping (no hook ups), and cabins - all along picturesque Mill Creek. The WV Forest Service has positioned split firewood at the entrance of the camping area for sale. There are three pit toilets, but no water at the camping area. There is a bath house, with hot water and laundry, two and a half miles from the camping area. The bath house is in the same area as the Ranger Station. Payment for camping sites, first come first serve, are self pay ($17.00/night) next to the wood shed. Make no mistake, Kumbrabow is remote, but worth the trip.

Company store had a plethora of items for all ages; hubby had a field day!! Beautiful area and very remote . Bus tours came daily, but not excessive as seating on the trains is limited, so good crowd control lol These trips book up months in advance; my husband booked it a year ago so don't drive up thinking you can get a seat. Three trips: ( different Shay locomotives too, but I am not the expert with this). 1. Bald Knob : a 4.5 hour train ride up the mountain. It was an open car, and it was pretty cold, even for those prepared. The scenery was pretty but I saw zero wildlife. We were going to have a hot cocoa, but after waiting on line for over 10 minutes, they ran out. There was a guy reading over the P.A., giving some history. They give you a " hobo lunch" : bun, turkey and ham, pasta salad, applesauce, chips, water bottle, 2 cookies and mustard and mayo. Bring additional snacks/ drinks as it's a long trip...and gloves and hats if during fall trips. 2. Greenbriar River: a more pleasant ride, 2.5-3 hours, enclosed car with table seating. Narrated as well at parts, but P.A. was terrible. Lunch was at a restaurant ( make your own sandwiches) in Durbin, our stop, and there were three choices which they determined. Saw 2 turtles and one bird. Highlight was meeting the people who Sartre across from us. 3. Whittaker Station: about a 2.5 hour trip, also on an open car. This trip had the most informative and interesting narration of the three. Got my hot cocoa lol and some pretty photos. Interesting town history. A cool experience for train buffs and company houses are available to stay in. Beautiful area.

Yeah that's all you see 90% of the time: trees! Train they used was originally for transporting lumber. They built wooden benches there and we had to sit all 5 hours on those benches. For the experience the price is absolutely ridiculously high. I think they should pay us to go through this insanity. For 5 hours there is zero service on the train. You can't buy water or snacks. They give you plastic bags with some cheap food that we would never touch like cold cuts of the cheapest sort and bottle of water. They stop at the end at some stop where they sell gas station snacks. This trip would be good the most for one hour but 5 hours it was real torture. Do not advise for older people or people with kids. Kids were going nuts from boredom. Horrific experience .

Seth, the owner, keeps the place in great shape and is quick to respond by phone or text. At $15 per person per night, it is a great value. Fayetteville is just minutes away with excellent local restaurants and shops, and the Canyon Rim Visitor Center and the rest of New River Gorge National Park are an easy drive from the campground.

Gorgeous State Park and one of my favorites since I was a kid. My parents used to take us camping…read moreand fishing here. My brothers and I used to love to swim in the streams and ride our bikes. I love to go here and hike with my own kids. The area is so quiet and so lovely, extremely peaceful. I always leave feeling refreshed and alive. I love to walk calmly through the forest and think. When I was a kid, I would pretend to be an indian or a pioneer, sometimes an escaping captive fleeing through the woods. I have always had an overwhelming creative imagination. The park is lovely to camp in and great locations for fishing. No huge waterfalls but still nice small ones. If you are like me, you just enjoy being outside!!!

An amazing set of Falls. See the Lower falls if you can…read more This is one of the best sights along the entire drive. There are 3 different sights to see at this stop. There are upper, middle and lower falls. Let's start at the beginning. There is a parking lot for about 30 cars directly off the road. There is a set of restrooms in the parking lot across from the trailhead. The trailhead has a solid pathway of switchbacks that leads to an observation point to the upper falls viewpoint. For people that want to shortcut the windy path, there is a straighter trail that goes directly down the hill to the first viewpoint. From there, there is a boardwalk with lots of steps that leads down the a bridge that crosses the river. Then more boardwalk and a steel set of stair to two platforms to view the middle falls. More boardwalk along the river and a large wooden stair platform leads to the lower falls. If you get a chance, you should see all three as each is unique and all are beautiful as much as the walk is enjoyable. Just remember, walking down is easy and you have to walk back up to return to the parking lot. Well worth the walk. Enjoy.

It is a well developed trail with lots of stairs, including an actual stairwell to get you to the bottom of the falls. If you are mobile and in the area you should visit, just give yourself some time on the hike back if your a big person like myself.
