I will say that the sites are somewhat small and there is some road noise (through no fault of the owners), but since I didn't spent much time in camp anyways, that was more than fine by me. They are transparent about that and it is just something to keep in mind rather than anything that detracts from the stay as long as you know what you're getting into and are okay with that.

I personally love how secluded this beach is that stretches out for miles. This beach is great for walking along the shoreline and/or enjoying a picnic at. In order to get here you will have to drive on a somewhat twisty road for about 6 miles. It is right next to Fern Canyon so I love visiting both at the same time due to the close proximity to one another. There are unique hikes in Fern Canyon due to the fern-covered walls you can walk through. This is such a beautiful area. I have not used the campground and only visited the beach so I can't speak to the campground aspect of this area. It is very peaceful and serene and a place where you can often spot elk.

Gold Bluffs Beach extends for 10 miles along the Humboldt County coast in Prairie Creek Redwoods…read moreState Park. It requires a day use permit to enter because of the volume of visitors that come here. Mostly because popular Fern Canyon is next to it. Gold Bluffs has a campground with 26 sites. Permits are not required if you have camping reservations. To reach Gold Bluffs Beach, you have to drive on a 6 mile windy dirt road called Davison Rd that you can access near the Elk Meadow picnic area. Trailers are not allowed on Davison Road. Visitors will need to pay the day-use fee, or show their federal pass or CA state park passes at the Gold Bluffs Beach entrance station. You can also hike the 11-mile James Irvine loop trail from Prairie Creek Visitor Center. No permit is required if you are hiking. Gold Bluffs Beach was named after a gold discovery in the 1850's that attracted some interest by miners. If you are going to come here, make sure you check out nearby Fern Canyon. It is a must-see! The 1,200 mile California Coastal Trail runs through Gold Bluffs. After hiking Fern Canyon, I walked over to the coast of Gold Bluff to walk in the water and soak in the sun.

The outside space was really well-designed, which isn't surprising considering the owners have a landscaping business. It had a nice patio with outdoor furniture and of course the hot tub! The private hot tub in the middle of the redwoods was definitely a highlight for our vacation. We brought our two small dogs and it was great to be able to leave the door open and let them roam inside and outside. There wasn't a fenced yard, but it was secluded enough for us to have them off-leash. The house had everything we needed for cooking and there was a tv with cable. Definitely plan on going back...hopefully soon! I also want to note that we actually stayed at Redwood Haven, not Forest Haven, although both are have the same owners and seem similar.

This time the water situation was terrible, and things were really run down. The water wouldn't fill the toilet, and all water in the rooms was brown. I say rooms, because the manager moved us out of one room that we suspect was actually being lived in by someone, and put us in what he called, "a better room." We couldn't shower, we couldn't make coffee in the provided coffee pot. The bed was pretty comfortable. There is a great, safe yard for dogs to wander around in, and that's one of the reasons we liked this place. In the past the place was mowed and well-taken-care-of, but this time the grass was taller than my ankles, and I wondered if they just couldn't afford the upkeep. I don't know what's happening at the Sea Cliff Motel, but I hope for their sake they can get it together and do the upgrades they need to do. Hard to do I imagine, with so few rooms and not charging much. I think they're in between a rock and a hard place. Three stars is generous... Here's hoping.

(We had a super easy fuss-free check in after a long drive, which is probably worth another half star). The accommodation was perfect for our needs. No wifi or even cell phone reception (yesss!!!), just a simply furnished but recently refurbished and absolutely spotless redwood cabin in an tranquil glade off the old main road to Trinidad. I complimented the owner on the thoughtful landscaping (appreciating that sort of thing on holiday) and so was surprised to hear her express regret over how truly beautiful it used to be. There's a long story there which is not mine to tell but it certainly seems as if the owner is now pouring her considerable skills into restoring the whole place, which by the way, dates from the twenties! Would highly recommend for families (we stayed in a 2 bedroom cabin with our 7 and 9 yr olds).

We stayed in the Brown Thrush cabin and found this place to be a gem. Reasonably priced, quiet, clean and no cell service. It's just down the road from Patrick's Point State Park, Larrupin Cafe and the town of Trinidad. The inn keeper was very gracious; she stayed up late to make sure we arrived and kept us well supplied with towels and coffee. Hope to stay again.

The breakfast was yummy - an apple Dutch baby (YUM), ham, yogurt, berries, and jam. She also provides cream, coffee and a French press. We rented the Rhododendron flat so we could have two rooms. It comes with a kitchenette with the coffee, tea, mini fridge, etc. The sitting parlor was lovely and the bathroom is pretty. The beds were comfortable and the establishment was pleasant and quiet.

There's a little pizza truck across the street that has pretty good pizza and a little market with beer and snacks and microwavable foods. But that's it, you're driving about 30 minutes into town for a restaurant or small grocery store. One of the other guests brought a Coleman stove and there's a little table outside where you can cook up food, that looked like a good idea. Also a fire pit to roast marshmallows or hotdogs. Now beware, it looks a little desolate when you pull up, but the inside was great and setup really well. I believe it's a work in progress to renovate. Fridge/freezer and microwave was great to have as well. It's right off the road but no road noise, it was quiet and peaceful. Great spot, highly recommended if your goal is to get to the trailheads quick and enjoy the outdoors.
