The grounds are gorgeous, and we loved the different camp features that served as wedding venues- the big dining hall for meals, the wedding ceremony on the beach, the cocktail hour on the waterfront lawn, and the gala reception in the rec hall. They do an excellent job marketing themselves to prospective families, but what we experienced was very different once our son was there - Summer 2025. They hire many alumni as counselors or counselors in training who are too young, and when issues arise, there seems to be very little accountability. In our case, it felt like protecting relationships with counselors' families took priority over protecting the campers. Our son attended as an incoming freshman. We discovered his trunks had never even been unpacked. His bathing suits, personal belongings, and even letters from home remained untouched after confirming MULTIPLE times everything was unpacked. Even more concerning, we learned that one specific counselor had been hazing and teasing both our son and another camper. When we brought this to Woody's attention, our concerns were initially dismissed. We later found out they were already aware there had been issues with this counselor. Rather than removing him from camp, they simply transferred him to another bunk--while still allowing him access to his previous bunk and the same children. That decision completely shattered our trust. We spent nearly $17,000 expecting our son to have an incredible summer. Instead, he came home with an experience that has had lasting emotional effects. We didn't fully realize the extent of it until this year, when he was almost unable to get on the bus to attend a different camp because of the anxiety and fear he carried from what happened. Woody's response was an apology, a bottle of tequila, and a $500 discount toward returning the following summer--as if we would ever consider sending our son back. In our opinion, the appropriate response would have been to take full responsibility and refund our tuition. Every family's experience is different, but this was ours. I hope sharing it helps another parent make an informed decision.

But I can't because: 1) The nurse had no idea that health insurance cards are protected health information (PHI) by law (HIPAA). 2) I hand-delivered 2 letters for my daughter in summer 2024. One got to her; the 2nd did not. This was a heartfelt father-daughter communication, so I complained. The registrat (AL) said she'd bring the matter to the director's (SM) attention that evening at dinner. I heard nothing. 3) I decided to stop sending my daughter and received an email from Huckins asking why. This time, I informed the director (SM) directly. She did not reply. Since their medical staff is poorly informed and their director doesn't care enough to even reply to parents, it seems fair to question whether one should entrust their child to those people. Finally, I should note that the registrar (AL) is an excellent communicator who responds quickly and fairly. She geniuinely seems to care.

At Wazi, she tried all kinds of activities that she had never even heard of, such as archery, and came home with new interests. She also matured tremendously over that summer as these young kids are given the opportuntiy to choose which activities they would like to do, take care of themselves and make all kinds of decisions on their own. My daughter felt safe and happy all summer. During the 2021 summer, they did an amazing job of letting the kids enjoy a mostly normal camp experience even though COVID was still around. Highly recommend Camp Wazi for any child as there are so many activities to choose from and it is a nice small camp with a great staff!
