We recently spent two nights at the Campbell House Inn while visiting Joshua Tree National Park. First it is the perfect location to the park, nearly a straight drive. But once you see the palm trees in the distance, head down the little dirt road, you feel like you have entered a private oasis. The house and property have quite a story to tell. We found freshly baked cookies upon our arrival, along with chilled water and coffee in the dining room/sitting room. Peggy was so friendly and helpful to us, as was the rest of the staff. We stayed in the Sunset cottage at the back of the property. It was nice and quiet and very private. We had a little porch out front that looked off into the desert. Our cottage had a kitchenette with a mini fridge, sink, dishes, microwave and plenty of counter space if you are going to heat up leftovers from one of the restaurants or fix a small meal. In the kitchen was a table for two. The queen size bed was very comfortable and the living room cozy. There were plenty of windows to let the light in, and at night step out on the porch for views of stars. The bathroom was huge, and everything was spotlessly clean and comfortable. The property is large, with outbuildings and cottages, a game room near the pool and a pool house where you will find towels for the pool. Each morning between 7am and 9am you will find a continental breakfast in the main house dining room, sitting area. We had coffee/tea, pastries and muffins, along with sausage, hard-boiled eggs and egg casserole muffins. The perfect start to a day in Joshua Tree National Park. Each afternoon we found warm cookies back in the dining area. It truly was an incredible stay. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Twentynine Palms. The Mrs. and I spent this past Saturday night at the Campbell House. It had been over ten years since our last visit and we were in the area for a stargazing event so it provided a great home base for our desert adventure. Driving up to the Campbell House is like going back in time. I could imagine driving up that dry dusty bumpy road in a Model T covered in dust. Seeking out the health benefits of the dry climate that were touted by medical practitioners at the time. The last time we visited Campbell House was probably in 2012 or 2013. Our lives were much different then but we still had find memories of the place. We arrived around 2:30 and made out way to the main house. We opened the large red door and walked across the creaky floor into the small office. The main house has a lot of character. The smell of stale furniture polish and old linen permeates the air. The walls are thick and made up of stones that I can assume had been gathered locally and painstaking bonded together to form a desert architectural masterpiece. Check-in was easy and we were assigned the Artifacts Cottage which is another stone structure on the outer perimeter of the property next to the cistern which is no longer used. The cottage was pretty spacious. It had a queen size bed, a modular couch, and a kitchenette complete with an actual fridge. The bathroom was surprisingly large. Outside there was a small porch with a table and chairs. The views from the windows were incredible. My only criticism is the wifi was spotty and there weren't any USB chargers. Continental breakfast is offered in the main house. Hardboiled eggs, sous vide egg bites, and bacon are just some of the items available. The dining room, which I believe was probably a living room at some point, was beautiful and relaxing. The grounds are beautiful and peaceful. The day we arrived staff was setting up tables for an event that evening so there were lots of things scattered around. There is a pool on the property as well that looked very inviting. read more

Went on a 4 day retreat here and it's just gorgeous! We had a group of 14 women. Everyone had a cottage and 3 of us were in the main house. The breakfast was really yummy and changed daily. The staff was really friendly and eager to help. The entire place was very clean and decorated with period furniture and paintings. Beds were very cozy. Listening to the coyotes and owls was super cool. Made me feel like I was in the desert! The room for our art studio was great. Very spacious and the bathroom was very clean. We booked Campbell House because of it's proximity to Joshua Tree National Park. We had no idea how special it was! Driving in, the Palm Tree lined property looked like an oasis. There were freshly baked cookies upon arrival. The evening was peaceful and quiet with only the sounds of the local owl family. We stayed in the Farmhouse Cottage. We found the location of our cottage to be ideal with plenty of privacy and a beautiful cluster of trees right outside the porch. We only stayed one night and it was quite chilly so we did not enjoy the pool/jacuzzi. However, if we had longer and it was a bit warmer, it would have been incredible to swim and soak under the stars. The stone house and grounds were beautiful and immaculate. Our cottage was quite cute as well! Breakfast was very nice for continental. Staff was so friendly. We wish we had more time there. We will definitely be back! read more

We stayed in the Sunset Cottage for three nights on our recent trip to Joshua Tree National Park. We were right down the road from the entrance. The cottage was such a comfortable place to return to after our adventures whether it was for a midday nap after a long hike or in the evening to rest up for a new day. We appreciated that the breakfast spread was available by 7am so we could start our day in the cool of the morning. We also looked forward to the fresh cookies and coffee in the afternoons. The grounds are beautiful and there were many places to sit and relax or read a book in shade or sun. We enjoyed playing chess outside with the sounds of the nearby fountain. We enjoyed trying to locate the resident owl every day. My list could go on and on. Next time, we will stay for a week. read more

This was our second time at the Campbell House within a year and each visit was memorable, amazing and healing for me. My oldest daughter passed away very tragically last July and the desert is my healing place. From the very private and amazingly historic property, to the pool and all of the amazing amenities that come with each room, my visits have been thoroughly enjoyable. The first visit, I stayed in the Pinto Room, and this most recent, the Sunrise Room. I am definitely a huge fan and forever a loyal customer. I'll be back again, sooner than later. I am so fortunate to be able to experience an overnight stay in this historical desert inn. Campbell House was established in 1925, with its beauty and elegance remains. I heard from some of my acquintances, that if we arrived pass 9 pm, we had to go to their sister's hotel to obtain the key. But we arrived around 7 pm, so we were able to do the check-in process on site. The Main House is where the lobby and dining room area are. The second I entered the Main House, I was surprised. Its Victorian/ Colonial charm made me felt so welcomed. We stayed in one of the cottage suite and it was absolutely GORGEOUS. It was $250 for the night, but for the experience, room size and amenities, it was so much worth the price. The main dining room have a cozy couch, fireplace, rustic baby grand piano which I absolutely love. I was able to had some relaxation by playing the piano. The lush surrounding garden with different birds' sounds made me able to do my "grounding" exercise. They have jacuzzi, if Im not mistaken they close at 10 pm. They have pool, it was not heated. Plenty of games inside or outside (chess, croquette, etc). The main dining room serves coffee, tea, hot chocolate with some snacks at all time. Continental breakfast provided from 7-9 AM. The room with full size bath and kitchenette (utensils included). Every corner, every single area, have a beautiful-well-thought-of-decorations. We chose the Campbell House because of the rave reviews. Our experience affirms those reviews. They utilize contactless check-in, which worked out well. In the small fridge was a box containing granola, yogurt, fruit, muffins, and bread - enough for breakfast for two people for two days. In the kitchen was a small coffee pot, decaf and regular. Our room, the Cholla, had two queen beds, a kitchenette, dining table for four, full-size couch and love seat, coffee table, side table between the couch and love seat, large screen TV, bookcase with Readers Digest books, armoire, soaking tub, two ceiling fans, two metal chairs and a table on a covered front porch. We had neighbors who were loudly enjoying themselves outside (it was not rude or late), but once they went inside next door, we couldn't hear a thing from them. The room was extremely clean. There is a swimming pool and hot tub on the premises as well. The grounds are beautiful. While staying here, we saw a coyote, roadrunner (yes, the coyote was after the roadrunner, which just flew into a tree; for once, the coyote came out of the ordeal uninjured), two owls, and many bats. The night sky outside is beautiful and full of stars. The Milky Way was plainly visible. All of these were real treats for us. Car parking is right outside the door. The entrance to Joshua Tree National Park is almost a straight ten-minute drive from the house. We spent two nights here and slept in comfortable silence. I am nervous about being too complementary, because they might raise their rates. It is a beautiful garden oasis, with cottages to give privacy. The rooms are roomy and well decorated, the bathrooms are large, with a large tub/shower. The room was very clean. We appreciated that the kitchen had real wine glasses and mugs, not plastic or paper. The breakfast was excellent and generous. And the air-conditioning was wonderful, 72 in our room 107 outside. We stayed in the Sunrise room and would like to try another room someday. We went to see the stars and visit Joshusa Tree National Park. We saw lots of stars on a moonless night. At home in Orange County, you can count all of the stars on your fingers and half of them seem to be headed for LAX. However, Twentynine Palms has very little to offer for eating, sightseeing or shopping. We enjoyed the wildlife too, jack rabbits, owls, desert Iguana and a beautiful snake. And there is much evidence of other larger wildlife visitors at night. Nice grounds and pool. Erica and Heidi and anyone else we dealt with were a pleasure. We weren't able to visit the inside of the Campbell House because it was closed because of the off season or Covid restrictions. We would like to come again in the fall or Spring and see the House and enjoy the desert when it's cooler. read more

What a nice hotel/b&b. We stayed one night in the Cottage room. Tons of space for 2 or 3 (sofa bed in sitting area). Great oasis to recharge after a drive and hike all over Joshua Tree National Park. They are still doing the no-contact COVID protocols at this time but everything was set up perfectly for our stay. Loved the grounds and the pool area was nice too. Lovely place! We wanted to go to Joshua Tree and this place had the best reviews so we figured we'd stop by and check it out. So glad we did! We were greeted by Jan. She was very nice and had a warmth about her which made us feel instantly at home. Then she showed us the available room which we were very impressed with so we decided we would stay here! :) There are treats available in the main room along with coffee and tea. There are also movies we can borrow as well as books and games. We went to the pool and jacuzzi. The jacuzzi was luke warm and the pool was cold, but it was hot outside so I wouldn't really want to sit in a hot jacuzzi anyway. The breakfast was great! We had omelette paninis! :) served with a side of fresh fruit! Definitely coming back here again! read more

Before you visit this B&B read the Purple Hummingbird a well written biography of the Campbells one of the first homesteading couples that built this home. First, the staff is knowledgeable, conscientious, and considerate. Second, the main building, a beautiful stone 2-story home matches every photo we saw. The interior adapted to a B&B retains most of the architectural features the Campbells built in originally. Third. we spent a very pleasant week in the Cottage a free standing place. The exterior of our room is deceptive, looking neglected. Open the door and you step into one of the most beautiful spacious collection of spaces we experienced. Their website is a true picture of it. You enter into a sitting room with a love seat from which to watch TV. There is a fridge, microwave, coffee maker and table setting for 2. The bathroom has a deep tub with an adjustable shower head. One bad note, the queen bed is extremely soft, the pillows uncomfortable and the bedspread heavy. After the second night our bodies adapted. Fourth, in the afternoon they have coffee, tea, homemade cookies and dates, watch out for the pits, in the dining room/lounge. Fifth, breakfast is delicious. The Continental, 7-8 AM has homemade goodies with honey butter, granola, fresh fruit salad and Greek yogurt. For the hot breakfast they make these muffin sized quiches with different ingredients each day, while keeping all the goodies from the Continental available. They made special ones for me when I explained I had a dietary restriction. Most important, everything is clean, the landscaping compliments the house, and you can see the home the way the Campbells lived in it. We will be back to this gem outside Joshua Tree National Park's Oasis Visitor Center. read more

This place was absolutely perfect for our family staycation. We booked the Campbell Suite which included two bedrooms upstairs in the main house and our own private bathroom. The rooms are beautifully outfitted, the beds are supremely comfortable (and I am picky), the curtains keep the rooms dark dark dark and we had our own private thermostat to control the AC which is super important for me *high maintenance hair flip*. I have a medical condition which prevents me from eating out at restaurants and Jan, a lovely woman who helped us at the front desk and who also apparently prepares the delicious food, offered to make me something special on the side, which just completely blew me away. My own family doesn't usually do that lol. They have a large assortment of teas, water, freshly baked warm cookies, dates and coffee available all the time. Breakfast includes both Continental (baked goods, fruit, yogurt) and a hot breakfast following. We spent our day exploring the expansive yards, playing in the pool, dancing to oldies under the lights of the garden gazebo. The grounds are gorgeous, the attention to detail takes you back in time, the people working there were all very friendly and helpful and the amenities were bountiful. I stayed here with my mom and sisters during the month of May. We stayed in a super cute cottage style residence. The room was large with full kitchen and bathroom, sitting area and TV. We had all the amenities we needed. There is also a small pool and jacuzzi which we used. Breakfast at the common area was fresh and delicious. They even catered to our special dietary restrictions: gluten and dairy free. The hosts were friendly and hospitable. They made us feel welcomed. It was very close to Joshua Tree where we explored for a night hike. Nice getaway, I would recommend it to anyone for a simple weekend experience. read more

We stayed here for three nights in December. It was everything we could have hoped it would be. The staff is very friendly. We stayed in the museum room. It is like a little cottage on the edge of the property. It had a little refrigerator and microwave. It has a few outdoor chairs. It was nice to sit out there and watch the sunset behind the mountains. The bed was comfortable. We had a bit of issues with the WiFi but we were not there to be on our phones or laptops. It worked more than it didn't work but there were a few times it didn't work. Breakfast was always good. The shower had good pressure and plenty of hot water. The room has a living area and I fell asleep reading on one that is how comfortable they are. Property is a bit on the edge of town but I loved it. Very close to one of the entries to the National Park. I would love to come back in a warmer month to try the pool area. We had some nice conversations with other guest at breakfast. We were looking for a place to stay that was near the Joshua Tree national park entrance. We turned to trip adviser and couldn't believe the high marks this place got. A place with that many great reviews has got to be worth visiting. We called 2 nights before we needed the place and booked a lovely stand alone room with powerful air conditioning that gave us all of the comforts of home. The inn keepers were attentive and helpful in picking places to eat and in pointing out what not to miss in the park itself. The breakfast was the best we had experienced on our long southwest road-trip and we stayed in a lot of B&Bs. After visiting the park at sunset and having a nice picnic, we returned to the Manor for cookies by the pool and was treated to a flying show by the resident bat diving around the pool feasting on bugs. In the AM we had a lovely breakfast (check out that picture) next to the tree that was home to some baby owls. Overall an exquisite experience and a wonderful way to end our road-trip. read more

Being a subscriber to The Sun Runner, certainly I have been conscious of the different print ads for Roughley Manor. Not until searching the RM website does it become apparent what the array of lodging is. The stately stone house is a creation of local stone, that is where one dines for the formal breakfast. A brief walk from the house is the former barn divided into 3 separate lodgings. Here was our room on the far end, the Cholla Room, designed with a friendly kitchen with the basic amenities, including a sink with its own window. There's ample space within the room to relax. The pillows abound, Next to the front door is an outdoor sitting area with Adirondack chairs. For 3 nights this was our home away from home. Joshua Tree is where we head for a winter get-away, being lovers of geology, flora and fauna. Late last winter was our first stay at Roughley Manor, coinciding with the breeding season of the Great Horned Owls who return to the tamarisk tree in front of the stone house. A camera was set up in their nest so that it was possible from the lobby monitor to view the intimate nesting behavior of the pair and their indeterminate brood. Fluffy wee ones. Roughley Manor, an estate, is accessible on a dirt road from the main road. Once on the property it's easy to walk on the sandy desert floor, finding paths and, at night, to view the night sky. Stumbled upon this b&b because we had a hard time finding a house in the area that didn't have a 2 night minimum requirement. We were so glad we stayed here. It's a 5 minute drive to the Oasis visitor center and 20 minutes drive to skull rock. The campbell house consists of the main house, many suites and cottages. We got a room by the front entrance in the Cholla Room. Free parking out front. The room has 2 queen beds, large size kitchen with microwave, dining area with 4 chairs, frig, 1 tub/shower bathroom and a nice front porch. Due to covid we were unable to enjoy their typical breakfast spread in the dining room. A very nice breakfast package was stored in the frig for us. It was so much food we had enough for breakfast and lunch! (yogurt, granola, baked goods, eggs, muffins, sourdough bread, quiche, and juices/milk) I've stayed at many high end resorts and air b&b and the room we stayed in was by far the cleanest. I'm ocd when it comes to cleanliness so I will check the baseboards and every surface during my stay and to my surprise, I couldn't find dust or a single left over hair anywhere. Bravo to the cleaning staff! We walked around the grounds after our long day of hiking and wanted to enjoy a night of star gazing but unfortunately the moon was so bright that night we didn't have the best stargazing experience. We enjoyed some family time in the jacuzzi and the kids loved swinging and running around the large property. So charming! Can't wait to return. read more

Rooms are spacious, beautifully decorated, comfortable, clean and everything has attention to detail. Gary and Jan are attentive, friendly & helpful. Great stay! It is a few minutes away from the second entrance to Joshua Tree. They were extremely gracious and accommodating. The room was clean clean clean. Even the door handles had been shined. There are homemade cookies available all day and the morning meal is good. It's definitely more of an east coast vibe then a dessert vibe: trees little park area ..etc. although there were other guest staying ...you would never know by how peaceful it was. read more

Wasn't sure. Had two teens along. Sure enough, when arrived they were not convinced- not the usual resort. By the time we left, they were total fans. Beds comfy for sure, but I really believe my daughter was sold on the frequently refilled figs (I think she was the biggest consumer) and for my son the cookies (which again I believe he ate majority) that when he finished he was greeted with the smell of more baking cookies. I came here for a scrapbooking retreat last weekend and had a lovely time. All of the rooms are MASSIVE. We stayed in the Magnolia Suite in the main house. It didn't have a little kitchenette like the other rooms did, but I didn't miss it. It had a sitting room with a TV, satellite TV AND a DVD player. The bed was comfortable, the couch was not comfortable for sleeping on so I wouldn't plan on using it for that! Our hosts Jan and Gary were wonderful, very friendly and ready to share the history of the estate and 29 Palms. The food was delicious, too. We have already made plans to come back. Thank you Jan and Gary! A couple of small negatives -- not sure if I would come here without my scrapbooking group. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot to do nearby, although I've seen other yelpers refer to the Joshua Tree National Park. Also, I heard that the pool was not heated, though I didn't go in myself. read more

If I could give this place 0 Stars I would. Completely unsafe to stay here. If I had known I was taking my son out to the middle of the desert where there was NO ONE on premises and the grounds are dark I never would have stayed there, it is a HUGE safety concern. My son and I were outside enjoying the stars and moon light, and he had a massive grand maul seizure. I could not find my telephone in the dark to call 911 and there was no one on site to help me. I'm left alone on the grounds holding my son in my arms while he seized and I'm screaming for help. Finally an 80 year old couple came to my rescue and drove me to the hospital and called 911. I can't even continue with my complaint, my heart is aching. read more

Lovely desert B&B nestled on the edge of Joshua Tree National Park. The Inn was established in the 1920's by Campbell family. This desert oasis offers offers a main guesthouse with a large sitting parlor / breakfast room. Don't miss the extensive pipe collection in the parlor. My favorite is the berled wood set just under the two ceramic owels. Enjoy stunning views anytime of day from the many sitting areas on property. Head east on the grounds for an early morning stroll to enjoy the breathtaking sunrise over the eastern mountains. The sunrise was such a surprise I took a few snapshots....but get out here to see the real thing! The gourmet breakfast is served daily about 8 am and includes fresh grown herbs and fruits from their garden. The fresh mint fruit salad was light, fresh and memorable with berries and cut grapes. And the fresh crustless spinach quiche was Almost as delicious as the banana pancakes we enjoyed on the first day. If you have a choice while visiting Joshua Tree, the Campbell House is your best bet! read more

I don't know that I've ever come across more friendlier people at a lodging place than here - and that's after years of business and vacation travel. Friendly, courteous and helpful. We stayed at the Oasis room, which is off the main house and comes with a small kitchenette. Comfortable, clean and comfortable. Wifi worked well. A large group of us, after my daughter's wedding, stayed at the Campbell house and we had an unforgettable time! The rooms and cottages are charming, the main room has a lovely fireplace and lots of games, breakfast was delicious and the staff super friendly. I was here from 2/08/18 till 2/11/18 This place is a gem a hidden beautiful spot in the desert . Rooms were big and beautiful the property has little nooks you can sit at outside gazebos, bench swings and real close to Joshua tree national park . I was there on a much needed retreat that was also amazing .. the staff is friendly and helpful . The food was amazing ! If you ever need to get away I would suggest you give this place a try . Normally, I stay in Palm Springs when I am on TDY to Twentynine Palms. However, this time around, there were no halfway decent hotels available at the government rate (due to spring break, I'm guessing). So, I decided to see what TripAdvisor and Yelp advised for a stay in Twentynine Palms. This place soared to the top of the list, so I decided, "Why not?" and gave it a try. I am so glad I did. This B&B is absolutely perfect! If you're traveling here for ANY reason, check to see if Roughly Manor has availability. If you are on TDY (TAD for Marines) as I was, they will offer the federal government rate (you must be on orders, though). So, onto the good and the bad: The Good: The room - Super clean and brimming with charm. I stayed in the Pool Bungalow Room. It looked exactly as pictured on the web site. The bed was very comfortable. All furniture was elegant and charming. There were antique pieces throughout the room perfectly selected to enhance the room. The amenities (soap, shampoo, lotion, etc) were quite pleasant. Even the dishes in the cupboard were unexpectedly high end. The grounds - Beautifully landscaped and well kept. That about sums it up. There are so many trees, you won't have to worry about finding shade from the intense desert sun. From the manor's entrance, the grounds resemble an oasis in the desert. The breakfast - So well done! They served a breakfast quiche over a leaf of romaine lettuce surrounded by bacon and fruit on my first morning and a lemon curd french toast with peaches worked in and a pansy petal placed on the whipped cream. The meals were so delicious, and the presentation left me in awe. The tables are located outdoors, and the sounds and scents of the gardens enhanced the whole experience. I should've applauded after I finished my breakfast - it was that spectacular. The management - Jan and Gary are both wonderful, caring people. This is obviously reflected in the grounds, the rooms, and the meals they serve. Holding a conversation with either will only confirm this. Gary knew me by name at first glance, and bid me good morning the first time I saw him. That sort of personal attention is quite rare and very appreciated. The Bad: Not one single thing. This place really is quite perfect. Bottom line - I absolutely loved this B&B. I think you'll be hard pressed to find its equal anywhere in the area (this includes Palm Springs). My husband and I both loved Campbell House. It is a beautiful secluded spot set in the desert where you can come and relax. The staff treated us warmly and we felt welcomed the moment we arrived. We stayed in the Sunrise Cottage which had a back porch overlooking the desert. At night we sat on the porch and enjoyed the peace and quiet and the nature that surrounded us. In the morning we had a lovely breakfast. Walking into the main house and smelling the freshly made food was very comforting. We had such a great experience and we will be going back again in January 2017! read more

I can't say enough about this little desert gem! I stayed here in a whim. Since it would be be my final visit to Twentynine Palms, I decided to splurge a little bit. I am so glad I did! When you are on the grounds you totally forget that you are in the middle of the desert...it is that beautiful! I loved the room I rented. It was very nice, well appointed and quaint. The breakfast was a nice surprise. When the website boasted a free breakfast I imagined a continental or buffet breakfasts...but NO...it was a freshly cooked full breakfast. The day I visited a tomato basil omelette, bacon and fresh fruit was served along with a variety of beverages (coffee, tea, juice). Even though I was traveling alone, I had such a great time enjoying the grounds and amemities, practicing photography and talking with the staff. Speaking of the staff...they are such nice people! They are very friendly and welcoming. Although, this was supposed to be be my final visit to Twentynine Palms, I have come up with two more reasons to visit. If you should find yourself in Twentynine Palms for an overnight visit...do yourself a favor and stay at the Campbell House. You won't regret it! read more
