Cozy cafe with new furnishings in then downtown, redeveloping part of Negaunee. Great selection of coffees, pastries and sandwiches, with great service. There is a separate room for special activities - there was a group painting there when we stopped in.

Huron Mountain Bakery - Ishpeming - Lemon-filled paczki; have you ever seen so much filling?

The bakery is amazing and it would be hard to select what to taste, except that I was a woman on a mission. I stopped in the week before Fat Tuesday. Placing the order was easy and took only moments to complete. I returned for Mardi Gras and the bakery was understandably busier. There were folks that failed to plan ahead, so their paczki pleasure was impacted. Me, I walked in, the same helpful person was retrieving orders and I picked up my pre-paid dozen quickly. The paczki were amazing and brought me right back to Michigan. The paczki we had in MN were good, but they aren't the same. And I've honestly never had paczki that were SO filled. And the fillings were so fresh, so perfectly balanced with the pastry. We tried six varieties (oof, yeah!) and loved them all. The prune paczki is an easy favorite, being traditional, but that Bavarian Cream was sublime. I was completely spoiled. It was fun that my first visits here were for 'holiday shopping,' which makes me look forward to coming back and trying more yummy baked items!

There's a shared parking lot outside the restaurant, so don't let a crowd scene dissuade you from stopping by. The restaurant is bigger inside than it looks from the outside. We were greeted warmly as we walked in and were seated immediately. Our server was very friendly and cheerful and she happily explained a few highlights on the menu. ASIDE: That Friday Fish Fry has got to be awesome; 'nuff said! Mind you, Smokin'Hubster makes great omelettes. His breakfasts are all good, but the omelettes are a step above. After visiting Sherrie's - and ordering omelettes - he's mentioned more than a few times that he wants to go back for more. He ordered the Farmer's Omelette and secretly wondered if he he should order a side of potatoes. When he 'fessed up on the way home, he admitted that the omelette was way bigger than he expected and he was pretty full as is. I, on the other hand, worried about finishing my Italian Omelette without additional sides. Cudighi is a local treasure and the folks that do it well tend to do it generously. In fact, this might be my favorite way to enjoy cudighi! Too often the bread makes or breaks the sammich, but an omelette this good is a way better showcase of flavors. Super melt-y cheese, lots of 'shrooms and just the right tough of sauce; balanced without being sloppy. The miracle of the toast is still discussed today. Both the Hubster and I are rye toast fiends and when we learned that the bread is made on-site... done and done. It really made a perfect accompaniment to the omelettes. Flavorful without a bulky chew, so it toasts perfectly and melts in your mouth. If I was a toast snob - and I might be - this would be in the top three of the Best Toast List. It's that good!

On the food side, the strength is clearly in the breakfast-style comfort items. Things like omelets, hash browns, and simple diner plates tend to come out hot and filling, with portions that lean generous rather than precise. The quality is solid but not highly refined, more focused on consistency and comfort than technique. Some plates feel better executed than others, but nothing really stands out as exceptional. Service is friendly and straightforward, but it can vary depending on how busy it is. When it is running smoothly, staff are attentive and quick with refills and check-ins. During busier periods, though, the pacing slows and things feel a bit stretched, especially with table timing and order flow. The ambiance is very much old-school diner. It is casual, bright, and functional, with a lived-in feel that matches the style of food. It is not trying to be modern or trendy, and that actually works in its favor. It feels like a place built for regulars, early mornings, and quick, familiar meals rather than long dining experiences. Overall, this is a dependable diner with strong comfort food fundamentals, friendly enough service, and an atmosphere that fits its identity, even if consistency can vary depending on timing and crowd.
