This place is the absolute worst - avoid at all costs. Every time I've gotten service from here I'm pretty sure I was grossly overcharged, and furthermore there has always been at least one new thing that was slightly wrong with my bike afterwards (which the shop had the gall to charge me again for the new repair). I also once came in well before closing time to pick up my "repaired" bike and was refused to be helped by the older man working there because he was too busy "closing up shop." The only reason why I come here is because I don't have a car and this is the only bike shop within walking distance from my house when I have a flat. If you are able to get to Sic Transit Cycles, go there instead for literally any type of service. This bike shop is a prime example of why geographic monopoly power is bad for consumer welfare. read more

1 star only because 0 wasn't an option. I rented a bike with low air pressure, so I put air in the tires and was practically reprimanded because "he had just put air in that tire". I told him that if he had just put air in it then there was a problem because that tire was really low. I ended up returning the bike after maybe 3 hours because the gears shifted inconsistently and when they did shift they would skip gears and the chain came off twice. I told him how the bike was performing and was bluntly informed that the girl who returned it said it was fine. No refund offered, no discount. He just dug his heals in that nothing was wrong with the bike. 100% waste of money and a major bummer for my only free afternoon in Ann Arbor. read more

I asked for them to recheck it since they did not fix my bike like I payed for them to do, and they said I would need to pay more for them to fix a problem they made worse! I went in to buy a simple Allen wrench - one of the most basic items in any bike store. I was told in a very strange and sarcastic manner "what do you need one of those for? Person I spoke with said they would be open and available so he wouldn't let me reserve. Showed up at 430 and got greeted by a sign stating that they changed hours and closed at 4. This is absolutely unacceptable to not update the information on the voicemail, Google maps website OR inform people that hours have changed. I drove over 11 hours under the guarantee that this shop would be open and have bikes. No wonder this shop has such a terrible rating of this is the quality of "service" they provide. I just bought a new bike (off Craigslist) the other day, and it made me pine for some of my well-loved bikes of days gone by. This got me thinking, or rather remembering, about Student Bike Shop. I am usually one to err on the side of giving folks the benefit of the doubt, but after several unpleasant encounters with this store, I feel completely fine sharing my feelings that this place is just plain difficult to deal with. The older man at the counter is indeed often in a foul mood -- and it's not in an endearing way. Some people can rock a curmudgeon vibe at any age, but that's not the case here. My attempts at getting repairs here were so frustrating that I'd happily walk, bike or drive to a store that's farther from campus to spend money on something simple like a bike lock. I feel like this store corners some of the student market because of its location, but if it's service people want, I'd advise checking into a few of the other local shops before you decide where to spend your dough. read more

If you want any kind of quality bike or components, or any kind of quality service, STAY AWAY! This bike shop is in business for one reason only: 5,000 new freshman come to town every year...some wanting to buy a cheap bike (even though the prices here are too high) and others wanting to rent a bike (just imagine you're getting one of those bikes you see left outside ALL WINTER LONG, gathering snow, dirt, rust, and who knows what else.) This place happens to make keys, and I really highly suggest you go elsewhere (Vogel's is the best place), because whenever I get a key made here, I get the cops called on me because the key doesn't fit into the door at my place of work and the alarm goes off. You're probably wondering why this has happened more than once, and it's because they are acroos the street from my job -- it's so tempting and you think it won't happen again, that the bad key was a fluke last time. Their faulty keys are so off that they actually ruined our locks, the keys got stuck in them, we've been stuck in the store unable to leave to go home because we couldn't lock the doors! They are near Nickel's arcade and the State and Liberty Street intersection -- excellent location. The service was not that great and the prices are insane! I tried to look for a bike here but never again. The nice thing about this place is that it is right by Cafe Ambrosia, so at least you can get a good cup of coffee on your way out the door. read more

I've found the shop to be reasonable about repairs. Once I wanted to buy the parts and do the repair myself and they were fine with that. The guy behind the counter explained how to do the job. They sell new bikes and used bikes that are on the expensive side. You can also rent a bike, which is a much better idea than abandoning it somewhere, which a lot of students apparently do. read more

Avoid this shop at all costs! I took my mountain bike in for a simple tune-up. The result of the first visit was a bike that skipped gears on all uphills. In other words, it was much worse than when I took it it. After, returning it to "have it done properly" the bike was returned with the chain pin not replaced. The result was the chain jamming and bending the front derailleur, necessitating costly replacement (at a more reputable bike shop). My girlfriend needed to replace a spoke. The result was a wheel alignments with spokes that had not even been tightened! We are going through the hassle of fighting the credit card charges. I was cheated, tricked, overcharged, and they didn't even fix my bike. These people are thieves. Details below. I brought my bike here after it had been outside for a season. I told the *owner* of the store that the chain had been slipping, the back breaks were not functioning, and that the gear-shifter cable needed to be tightened. I have done my own bike repair, but I'm in the middle of a job search, and didn't have the time. He said it needed a new chain and a tune-up. I was prepared to accept the new chain as long as it wasn't too expensive. I asked, he told me twenty dollars. I agreed and said to do the tune up. I came back the next day to pick it up, and they tried to charge me $85 for what they had done. This is a 1985 Schwinn Traveller 2. It goes on Craigslist for $85. He said that the tune up was $55, and then tried to tell me that he spent 3.5 hours on my bike. I was so angry I told him he should have mentioned that it was going to be FOUR TIMES what I was concerned with before (the 20 dollar chain), and he said in response that he was just going to sell my bike if I didn't pay him. I came back the next day and paid. This is when I got really pissed. I told them I felt cheated, and they should have told me. The owner hid from me in the back, and sent his wife to collect my money. Then I got the bike home. On the ride home, I noticed that the back brakes still didn't work. Not like, they made a bad attempt at fixing it. They didn't TOUCH it. So, being upset that I paid so much, I grabbed my tools and disassembled the bike, to see what a $55 tune-up buys you. Balls bearings: rusty, unlubed. Gearshifter? cable is still lose and it doesn't move the derailer at all. Wheel alignment? Off. The front brakes, which weren't broken before, were for some reason adjusted, and now one side of the brake pad is making contact with the rim when the brakes are depressed. AND THE CHAIN STILL SLIPS. there was a new chain on the bike, I guess they're not willing to be that bold with their swindling. In fact, it appears that the only things they did in fact do was armor-all my seat and put a new chain on. This place was a total ripoff and shames any mechanic anywhere. Do not go here. read more

However, recently a friend of mine was sexually harassed by the owner. She went to the store for the second day in a row because the gear shift she had paid him to fix the day before was still not working (again, terrible service). While she was there he looked around to see if anyone was watching and then pulled her in close to him for a forceful hug, pinning her arms to her side. Luckily, she pulled away and quickly got the hell out of there, while he yelled "have a nice day" after her. DO NOT give this man your business. Its too bad that it is the only bike shop near campus, but do yourself a favor and find somewhere else to fix your bike. I joined yelp just to write about these people. I walk by this place and see people shopping there every once and awhile and feel terrible for them. I rented a bike from these people and the wheel had a leak. I went back and they were so rude about fixing it. I spent half my rented time fixing it and they didn't even want to discount me for that time or give me longer. I've also been walking and the old man who owns this place almost ran me over with his car. I was walking through the crosswalk and he didn't even slow down. I had to jump out of the way. Overpriced, rude and misleading. Went in for a replacement crank arm. When I suggested that they were overcharging me for the part/labor (in a reasonable manner, not intentionally being a jerk), they told me to do it myself if I wanted something cheap/free.. The old man that's usually at the counter is always grumpy and have fun using a credit card, he'll make sure to let you know that you should have cash. This store is amazing! They provided me with a great new ulock when the one i bought from Wheels in Motion just a month previous failed to work. They replaced my seat when someone stole it off my bike and recommended one that screws on. They cut the lock someone else had locked to my bike off immediately. They were extremely helpful in store with looking for other items like a seat cover for when it rains and even though they didn't have one for my exact seat type, they allowed me to try it on my bike and return it. They are in a great location and provide other great services. Ill probs buy my next bike from them if this one gets stolen too (as my previous one did)! Thanks for all your help guys! read more

I decided to check out this shop bc of the location. Truth is, they use that to their advantage, and provide sub-par service. I've been there several times and am forced to go back only because they are the closest place, but after my last time I'd rather just walk or load my bike in my car and go somewhere else. Visit #1. Flat Tire. I bought 1 tube only to find out when I got home that it had a gaping hole. I went back and to exchange and only after explaining the entire situation and checking with the owner did the "sales-person" decide that he could exchange the tube for one w/o a hole. (Yes, I know how to install a tube&tire and didn't puncture it myself.) Visit #2. Need replacement Rim, Tire, & Tube. My front wheel was stolen, so I carried my bike in looking for a cheap replacement and made it clear that I wasn't looking for a premium wheelset. The owner explained to me that the cheapest thing they had was $160+ dollars. I then went to the other location,(not realizing they are the same place) and finally someone else there looked up my rim size and found the right rim for $50...but it was at the first location! I went back and bought a single rim(+tube & tire) from the owner for $70(overpriced), when he said the cheapest they had was $160+. I've had many more negative experiences with them. They treat most customers as if they know nothing about bikes, and don't know what to do when they realize you know more than they do. I agree with the other reviews, GO ELSEWHERE!! read more

You can rent a rusty pile'o'crap from here if you're desperate, but you're probably better off buying a $75 bike from K-Mart and giving it to a homeless person when you're done (there's never a shortage of them around Ann Arbor). If it wasn't for the fact that it's within walking distance from campus then they would have withered long ago. Instead, they feed parasitically off the gullible and vehicle-deprived students of UM. Terrible. Went in look for new tubs from my tires. I tell the guy the size I need. He gives me what looks like the wrong size. I ask him, will these fit? He tries to tell me that they fit all sizes, which is wrong, they are totally the wrong size. I don't see the point in trying to straight up lying to customers in order to make a quick buck. This is a place that deserves zero stars. The only good thing that can be said about Student Bike Shop is that, because of them, I've learned how to repair and keep a piece of junk bike in working order. I bought a used bike from them and, knowing nothing about bikes other than how to ride them, trusted them when they said it was in good order. They guaranteed that if I found any flaws they didn't tell me about, I could bring it in and they would take care of it for free. After two days, my roommate took a look at it and told me the wheels were out of true, the first time I'd heard of the concept. Sure enough, the wheels wobbled like they were drunk when you spun them. Long story short, they guys there told me to fuck myself when I brought it in and asked them to true the wheels on the bike they sold me 2 days before. Avoid this place like the plague. Great Lakes Cycling and fitness is infinitely better. read more

Trust me that this one star is only here because whoever coded the yelp rating system does allow me to give zero. This is the first time I have ever yelped- I am not usually a reviewing type but I feel the need to warn people about this awful grime-hole of highway robbery. I walk in with my bike, because my rear tube is flat. I'm not sure if it just needs air or has a hole. The ancient, crotchety owner points me to the air-hose on the floor, and as I bend down to fill my tire he stage-whispers to one of the people working for him "They don't even know how to do that" Wtf. As I go to unscrew the cap to fill up my tube, he condescendingly mutter "counterclockwise." Wtf. After I inform him that I am capable of some things, I fill my tubes up and go to the nearby coffee shop to do work and wait to see if my tire deflates. An hour later it's completely flat so I go have them replace it. First of all, he wants to charge me $6.95 for a tube and $15.95 for labor... are you kidding me? However, I really had my heart set on riding my bike home so I accept. The lady working for him (very nice, no shade to her at all) says they'll try to have it done by five but it will probably take until tomorrow... are you kidding me. This was around noon. So basically, he wanted me to pay him $23 to take 5 to 24-plus hours change a bike tube. I say no way, and then she says if I throw in another $5 he'll probably have it done by today. Thank goodness that at this point I called The Local Bike Shop on 4th Ave. $15 TOTAL for the tube and labor- done in less than 20 minutes. Please students, do not let yourself get scammed or treated like you're stupid. This man does not deserve your patronage. The Local Bike Shop is faster, cleaner, nicer, and cheaper and only about four blocks away. read more

Saddest bike shop we've ever seen. Wife and I were vacationing in Ann Arbor and asked at an Outdoor store and a Yoga studio for recommendation for bike rental - both sent us to the Campus Student Bike Shop. I called repeatedly before somebody answered the phone. We found the shop on Maynard (not the one on Forest). The rentals were beaten and rusty, looked like they were dragged in from a junk yard or town dump. We took two cruisers. We just wanted to bike for a couple hours on the rumored Huron River Bike Path. They didn't know where it was or how to get to it. I asked for the seat to be raised; the bike was taken to the mechanic and returned unchanged. Before we left we were told about a $60 per bike cash deposit and pointed to nearby ATMs. Ouch! We weren't offered helmets and I still don't know if the store rents them. Once off riding, found that each of our right brakes didn't respond. My wife discovered her seat flipped up when you put weight on it. We switched bikes and I stopped every two minutes to push the seat back down again, eventually using my Yoga butt muscles to do it while riding. Given the store's reputation and location, a new owner would have a gold mine. As is, Elvis and his energy have left the building. (PS, we found the B2B paved bike path and had a grand time [despite a seat up my butt]). read more

I went into this shop with my girlfriend who lived right around the corner so it seemed convenient at the time. Each time I went in the service was consistently terrible. From the shopkeeper's attitude it felt as if we were inconveniencing him simply by being there. Everyone has bad days, but I've been into this shop about four times and that was the impression he gave each time. Service aside, the pricing was exorbitant for most of the services (about twice what other places quoted). Furthermore, when my girlfriend's rear basket fell off after they had installed it earlier that month, they wanted to charge another $15 dollars just to reattach it. With so many other competent, friendly and reasonably priced alternative bike shops around town, I can't think of a single reason for anyone to shop here apart from its location. read more

I found the student bike shop to be a reasonable spot close to campus that takes walk-ins. Transition Cycling is also close to central campus but requires an appointment, which can be wildly inconvenient. The service pricing is also reasonable although parts are not the best brands and are overpriced. A complete tuneup is about $50 and a wheel truing is about $15. In terms of promptness, they guarantee completion of work by a certain day, but what they mean is "by the end of that day". If you get something done by a given day, pick it up at 5 pm. The owner wasn't rude to me the way a lot of reviewers have described during their experience, but he wasn't cordial or welcoming either. This shop is convenient, but screams mediocrity. I have a mid-level commuter bike, but if you own a Surly LHT or a high end race bike, take it somewhere better. read more
