One thing they could do a bit better with this festival is communicating when events are changed/postponed/cancelled. Three years ago, they finally found the perfect property - located in the cute little community of Lakewood - and, officially became the owners of multiple homes. Lake Chautauqua is surprisingly idyllic - set in the finger lakes of southwestern New York - it is surrounded by wineries and cute little communities like Bemis Point and Jamestown (which was the birthplace of Lucille Ball.) It's about 40 miles east of Erie, PA and 80 miles south of Buffalo; it is also easy to get to from Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York City. The lake it's self is about ten miles long and is great for fishing, boating, tubing and other variety of water sports. The Chautauqua Institute is nearby - hosting concerts and a series of high profile speakers (Al Gore, Jane Goodall most recently) throughout the year. The community of Lilydale is host to a psychic community (and, fairy houses) which is renowned throughout the country - a little wacky, if you ask me, but very interesting to visit. Year round it is a beautiful place to live: the colors in the fall are amazing, winter brings lots of ice fishing, skiing and such, spring and summer are big tourist times here. Frankly, the only time I am truly relaxed is for the two weeks of vacation I get to take with my family (yes, I know I am a dork for liking to hang out with my family on vacation.) We sleep late, eat well, sit around on the boat or deck reading/playing cards/staring at the mote in the middle distance, drink wine and just chillax. It's wonderful.

Conneaut itself is kind of strange with the creepy abandoned looking amusement park, and the super haunted Conneaut hotel. We drove right through the amusement park and hotel until we reached a parking lot right on the lake. I think this is a public beach area right next to the tiki bar. I was impressed by how clean it was, and how beautiful the nearby lake houses were. The tiki bar was busy in the middle of the hot summer day. We walked right onto the dock for their boat! It was super easy and convenient. The lake itself is clean and pretty! We took the boat out to the sandbar at the flagpole in the middle of the water. It was only a few feet of water in some areas and kids and dogs could stand. The water felt amazing - 76 degrees! The bottom of the lake at this point is very sharp, so we had to wear water shoes. The lake is really beautiful and this is a great day trip from Pittsburgh.

On Labor Day weekend, it was cold if you spent any length of time on it. Great temp for tubing or boating. There are many coves or sandbars you can stop on if desired. Our hosts had a private dock so we did some swimming there. This is truly a town where families gather over generations sharing traditions. The weekend after Labor Day is typically the wrap up of the Summer season. This area gets lake effect snow and in the winter is pretty sparsely populated. Absolutely the worst camping we have ever done, she refused to let kids ride bikes after 8pm even though it was light out! Said kids couldn't be at the playground without adult supervision even though they were ages 7 to 16. On July 4th weekend we lost electricity the owner plugged our camper which is a 30amp to a 50amp and melted our cord! Absolutely worse camping ground around highly suggest looking into Lesiure lake or hemlock lakes. We were paid through end of the season and went to pick up the rest of our items and they were removed from a site we had paid for!
