A picnic pavilion with tables next to charcoal grills and a nice set of playground equipment over a mulch base. It is available first-come first-serve and there was a party setting up the afternoon I stopped by. There is street parking here and be sure not to block the driveways or fire hydrants. Colonel Crawford Park or Woodcock Creek Lake as it is more commonly called, is a great place during…read morea normal year, but unfortunately in early March of 2021, there has been a malfunction in the dam water control system, and the entire lake has unfortunately been drained. I stopped to visit yesterday to see it for myself, and everywhere that once was water is now just mud and ice. Surprisingly, there was still water coming out of the outflow on the back side of the dam, my guess was ice meltoff. I feel bad about all the fish and other aquatic wildlife that have perished due to this predicament. I imagine it will take months, if not a year or more, for the water levels to get back to normal . . . sigh. On a good note, the park was packed with people to try and get a look at the empty lake, but I imagine these crowds won't last, and this will do harm to the local businesses that provide services to all the visitors during the year (especially bad for those that already lost business during the pandemic). Hoping for better days . . . .

There is a rooftop bar at this location, but we did not partake in that -- just golfed a bit. There is plenty of parking nearby, including some no-cost spots, but they likely fill fast during busy times. There was signage at each hole with a colorful picture and information about the area. There was a decent amount of text to read and we found out some interesting new things we probably wouldn't have ever known if we hadn't golfed here!

Sort of like how the saying goes that pork is the other white meat, Erie Bluffs State Park is very…read moremuch the "other one" in the local vicinity compared to Presque Isle. Where as Presque gets millions of visits annually, Erie Bluffs is still fairly new only having joined the PA state park system in 2004. The benefit is that the bulk of the coastline along Lake Erie is developed and this 500+ acre parcel represented the last large acreage that was still untouched. The basic premise is that the park is about 12 miles south of Erie proper in Lake City, PA. There is a small single sign along West Lake Road and there is only a single parking lot/entrance for the park (technically there is a small secondary entrance and parking area if you're going to be fishing/kayaking Elk Creek which is slightly up the road from the aforementioned main entrance). You've got some fishing/boating/off-season hunting allowed and about five miles of walking trails. I'm not going to say hiking because in reality none of the trails here that we saw should be thought of as hiking. We did a box loop by walking the start of the Transition Trail - turned left to the Black Oak Savanna Trail - right to the other half of the Transition Trail - right to the Lookout Trail - over to the Fisherman's foot path - up Wildflower Way which leads back to the Transition Trail. Now there are three points with this park worth noting: 1. The trails are not marked. Is that a big issue? Not really as everything loops/links into each other and if you have any sense of direction you should be able to figure it out although in principal you could take a wrong turn and go a few miles over to the other side of the park by accident. 2. Maybe the western side of the park further away from the parking lot has better views, but the side we (and most of the people visiting the day we were there) were on doesn't offer much. Very heavy foliage and tree cover with only limited vantage points where you can appreciate the bluffs/view of Lake Erie. 3. Another reason that it's hard to appreciate the bluffs is that part of the trail nearest them (Bluffs Edge Trail) is gone due to erosion. Supposedly the bluffs are being gobbled up at the rate of a few feet per year by Lake Erie and even though the official park map lists that trail, it's very much not fully there. With all this said, parks like these are my favorites within the PA system. Meaning I enjoy the smaller C-List places without all of the touristy junk attached to them. Very pleasant experience here…read more We called a few days in advance to rent a fishing boat for 4 hours. We thought the price was quite reasonable. When we arrived, we were shown a safety video on boating. The worker at the time then met us at our boat and gave us more tips. We had no trouble on the water, and it was a great day. The only thing I would suggest is a more streamlined payment and paperwork process. It's still a bit old school and time consuming. Great day on the water!

Before you do ANYTHING and I mean ANYTHING AT ALL, have them show you the propeller regardless if there is a swim deck on the boat or not BEFORE you SIGN ANYTHING AT ALL OR TAKE IT OUT IN THE WATER. Trust me, it will save you in the end. DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING UNTIL YOU HAVE READ EVERYTHING ON THE PAPER AND HAVE SEEN EVERYTHING! We ended up paying for a new propeller that "was broken" and which ended up not being the cause of us stranded in the water. According to one of the employees who opened up the motor and I quote "You are fine, it's nothing. It's just the pin." He then yelled across the parking lot to the owner "it's not the drive, it's the pin in the transmission. We just need a new pin." The owner's response "I still need to put a new prop on it." Again, we were told by the employee we were not at fault. The owner then removed the 3 blade prop, removed the plastic sheath, said that part was fine. He did not charge us for a new plastic sheath and then put a 4 blade prop on the motor, which we were charged for. Apparently after we left, they replaced the pin as we saw the same boat in the water a few hours later. So for the frustration and dishonesty from the owner, if you still rent from them, DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING UNTIL YOU QUESTION EVERYTHING AND TAKE A PICTURE TO COVER YOUR BUTT. Do not trust and take your business else where.
