Don't get swept up in what is the long con of emissions repair in the Chicago suburbs. The first…read moretime my pickup truck did not pass emissions testing I took it to the top "certified" repair center in the little book that they gave me at the emissions facility. This place is conveniently located right across the street from the testing facility AND just happens to be the old testing facility. Several days later I had a $3500-4000 repair estimate to get it to pass emissions. At the time, this was a ~10 year old vehicle with almost 300,000 miles on it. I wasn't going to put that much money into something that old. However, it is paid off (long ago) and still runs great. So, with some smoke and mirrors and luck, I managed to get it through the emissions testing in the eleventh hour. However, this year, I could not. Don't get me wrong. The truck REALLY did need exhaust work. It sounded like a 70's era pickup kept at a farm to do work around the property and it gave off smoke and fumes from the holes in the middle of the exhaust system. I am not contending whether it should have passed: it should not have. I simply disagree with the process of hooking a vehicle up to a computer that does nothing more than read out computer codes and assign testing failure based purely upon that...not upon testing ACTUAL emissions from the vehicle. This year I gave Oxbo a try to see if I could get the vehicle through emissions. Why, you might ask, would I want to go to this trouble for a (now) twelve year old vehicle with 300,000+ miles on it? Well, as I mentioned, it is paid off and it runs perfectly. However, in the time between inspections, the local Toyota dealer service department took it upon itself to turn in to Toyota some images of the vehicle's undercarriage (think long standing recall problem). Voilà! The entire frame of the truck was replaced without costing me a dime: a $21,000 repair! So, yeah, I want to keep my "new" truck! However, this frame replacement did NOT come with a repair of the exhaust system. I asked Thomas about it and they advised me to give Oxbo a try (BTW, I also highly recommend the Thomas Toyota repair shop for honesty and skill). They told me that is where they have all their exhaust work done when a car owner insists that they "do" the work. In fact, if you ask around, most of the Joliet dealership service facilities are going to tell you that Oxbo is where they get their exhaust work done. Oxbo saved my truck from sitting in the alley with a "For Sale" sign posted in its window. Oxbo did the work in less than a week (I told them that I was in no rush since it was the holidays and it is now my second vehicle). Most importantly, they estimated less than $1K and delivered. I want to say the repair cost between $800 and $900. The thing to note here is that is about one quarter the price quoted to me by "the other place"; the one recommended by the omissions facility...not that Oxbo is not recommended...I never checked. Most importantly, the truck does not sound like it belongs on a farm in the south and it passed emissions with flying colors, no smoke (literally), mirrors, or luck required. The "experience" at Oxbo is not going to be like what you would expect from a dealership service department. They are a little "rough". Dealing with some of the kids in the "office" is particularly difficult (they always seem to need to go get the boss out of the garage...even to find your keys). However, the fellow who owns the place and does most of the work along with the rest of his garage staff KNOW what they are doing. They will do the repair that you NEED, not the one that the manual (or a need to maximize profit) might recommend. That is the only thing that really matters. Oxbo is an honest, hard-working, small business. They deserve your support. They will earn your support by the quality of their work and great price. Give them a try. You won't be disappointed!

I provided the fault code (P0750) along with background on what had already been done to the vehicle, and asked them to review the problem and provide a quote to replace the shift solenoid. The following day, I received a call with their "diagnosis," which was surprising and disappointing. They stated that based on the code, dirty transmission fluid, the solenoid supposedly being internal to the transmission (it is actually external), and what they believed to be 180,000 miles on the vehicle, they recommended replacing the entire transmission. In reality, the vehicle currently has under 153,000 miles. They quoted approximately $5,000 for a transmission replacement, which I declined. I completed the repair myself shortly after. The shift solenoid was accessible through a side pan in the engine bay, and the job took only a few hours. I also performed a fluid change since it was due. The vehicle is now shifting smoothly and operating normally, confirming that a full transmission replacement was unnecessary. I will say the manager/owner was friendly during our initial conversation and did not seem dismissive. However, the information provided during the estimate was inaccurate and ultimately led me to feel that either the shop was pursuing a high-dollar repair or simply did not want to take on the actual job. If the work was outside their technicians' scope, I would have preferred they say that directly. I wish them well as they grow their business, but based on this experience, I will not be returning.
