This place is a hidden gem in Brooklyn! Although I don't live in the area, I know a handful of people that do. Came here recently with my boyfriend for about an hour. There's parking available upon arrival. There's seating alongside the body of water. There's various activities available to do here including walking, taking a seat to overlook the water or people-watch, picnic, BBQ or grill, fishing, and running or jogging. The area is definitely kept clean. There's plenty of trash cans available here as well. I'm looking forward to returning here for some more relaxation. read more

I didn't expect the Canarsie Pier is surrounded by burnt, sun-scorched grass. I walked toward the pier expecting a couple attractions or scenic view. While it was nice to see people fishing or enjoying a cookout, it felt barren and hot. I would go to Brighton Beach or Coney Island instead. I was driving East on the Belt Parkway. Plumb Beach was packed with cars, so I continued on until Canarsie. Parking at the pier seemed messy, so I drove to the park and then walked over to the pier. First time visiting and I thought it was very cool. The pier extends out a good distance, with plenty of spaces to cast a fishing line, as many people were doing. Music was playing out of numerous Bluetooth speakers and several people were grilling delicious-smelling food. There was a community feel, like a party or something. The vibe was awesome, the views were scenic, and the people seemed friendly. This pier could easily escape the notice of most New Yorkers, but it's unique and awesome and well worth a visit. read more

This is such an amazing oasis in Canarsie. Perfect for fishing enthusiasts, walkers, families looking for a quiet place to picnic (there's even a mini playground for the kiddies!), couples looking for an out of the box date spot. It's surrounded by bike lanes, right off the Belt with lots of parking. You can even access it from Canarsie Pier via the bike/walking path. Benches and tables are available throughout the Pier. I grew up next door to Michael De Luca, the famous movie producer (Look him up on IMDB.com) Anywho, his mom always told him not to leave the block. Yeah right... We'd take our bikes up to Utica ave for White Castle, not a care in the world. Its the summer in Brooklyn, Son of Sam is gearing up, who cares when your a kid? One day I said, lets take a ride to the pier like we did 100 times over the years. Well this time, we met some kids I never saw before. MD had a brand new bike with a cool banana seat. The kids talk to us, I didn't think anything of it and we say see ya. Well the two kids come out with a huge wrench and say gimme that bike! (They aint takin' my bike) I say Mike, what do you want to do?? He kinda pissed himself and ran home. And his mom blamed me. I knock off a star for that move! Very peaceful and beautiful in the evening. Tonight I just wanted to just steal away for some quiet me time to gather my thoughts. It feels so good there in the evening during the summertime because you get a nice, cool breeze. This place is a favorite spot for avid fishermen and wannabes lol......those are the one who act like they know about fishing but don't. There is ample parking spaces available for lots of people. There is several tables and benches all over the pier to accommodate everyone. There is also a picnic area to get your grill on if you want to. I make sure that use the bathroom prior to coming here so that I don't have need to use the portable toilet. The scenic view is very nice to look at. What an awesome spot. I've driven by the pier a few times but never went until today. It's located right off of the Belt Parkway, the Rockway Blvd exit. There are plenty of concrete benches all the way around the railing that surrounds the pier. Plenty of parking spaces too. Parking is free and open from 8 am to 2 am. There's a Park Office off to the right as soon as you enter. There are also some port o johns there which is convenient. There are also some picnic tables with some grills as well which is cool. Plenty of fishers, and a few couples. Nice place to watch sunsets and sunrises. Also connected by a bike and walk path. read more

If you're from Canarsie you've been to the Pier for one reason or another. As of lately it has been a go to for me to just relax and be with my thoughts. While it may not be picturesque as some Willamsburg spots, it gets the job done. Depending on the day and season it may be empty or packed. Ppl tend to park up and handle their business there lol . Some Fish and spend all day there. In the Summer, you can find families having full on picnics and Barbecues. At night sometimes people just misuse the space however, it can still do the trick if you can block all that out. of my favorite spots to walk around and unwind. Perfect spot for a night stroll or to sit and talk. It's been a Staple for the area and I'm glad new places are being built in the area as well. read more

I can only give a limited review since I came at night. It was a cold, windy night in Brooklyn. I happened to be in Queens when the message came through. 2 of the coolest guys ever were looking for little old me?! Nah, it couldn't be! We're working now, come through, Ova Heeya! They said! So I schooled Stevie & kidnapped him in my car & off we went into the cold dark night over to Canarsie Pier. So glad I did! Even though it was night time there was still people milling about but I was safe. I was with my boys V.U, J.C & that Dayum overprotective Stevie! I know he only came out that night to watch over me. Yeah Stevie I peeped your hold card! LOL How many people can say they had a GREAT time hanging with some new friends in a dark parking lot? I can! Thanks for the memories guys! read more

me, Zee bestie & his 3 friends friends took a trip out here last night despite of the humid weather and moody rain that swept by us every now and then. We were geekin' out and wanted to go fishing there, of course all of us were newbs- as we look around us at the experts with nets and 3 fishing rods per person, we had two fishing rods and 2 people attempting to just get their rod together LOL and understand the art of fishing. But when we drove into the place, to my surprise, it was spacious, there were lots of parking spaces, some benches and i spotted a food truck there as well. It was quite a comfortable pier. Though i was fully surrounded by seaweeds.... and cups and garbage left by the patrons there, i do wish we all cleaned up after ourselves :P but the pier itself is a good spot! wish i discovered it earlier! we were only planning to catch and release, but we still have yet to get the niche of how to work the rod lol... at least we found a nice pier though! we basically were catching air the whole night but that's okay hahaha...we'll definitely come here again! I do recommend bringing some bug spray- these mosquito feasted on us. It also makes a nice group spot, I mean it was a Monday night (around 7?8?) on a Columbus day so it was kind of quiet, there were still a good number of people there but not overly crowded at all. Even with the rain and nasty weather, they had plenty of people there fishing and all, we left around close to 10PM and there were still good number of people still fishing. read more

Either you love the fresh air blowing in from Jamaica Bay, the perfect fishing spot for urban rodders, the families picnicking under the sparse trees, and the reopened bathrooms, or you don't bother stopping here often. The fish haven't been safe to eat since 1920 when the bay was a sewage dump for a rapidly growing city, but there are plenty to catch and throw back. Further out on the island this kind of spot could have been a financial success with marina, restaurants, retail and romantic walkways. But, right here that never worked, and so this landfill construct remains the place where Rockaway Boulevard dead ends at the water's edge. Gruff charm and a cool breeze. read more

Canarsie Pier has been my go to spot for over a decade. I have been coming here when I need a rest from driving on the Belt Parkway or even when I just want to pit stop and eat my food. The scenery is very calming during the Fall and Winter months but of course towards the Spring and Summer months it gets very busy and not so quiet. Many picnic here, go fishing, park & sleep, etc. At times I find it hard to find a nice spot to rest where cars aren't hovering next to one another. All in all, I like it here and it will continue to be a place where I can have a few moments of chill after being on the road. read more

I love this place. If you're looking for a nice outdoor spot to hang out and relax for an hour or two, come to Canarsie Pier! Located right off the Belt Pkwy (which you can see from the pier itself) is a wonderful spot to fish or just hang out. It's typically nice and cool thanks to the breeze from the water. There are food trucks and restrooms (port-a-potties if you come pre-season). Plenty of benches, including chess tables. There's a small splash park for kids alongside a BBQ area. Everyone usually does their own thing here and it's open until 2AM! Parking is right on the pier which is convenient. Definitely a nice place to kick back for a few. read more

I am not a big fan of pier fishing, I prefer the boat or the shore, but this location is perfect for someone who want to fish in convenience place, where you can park your car near by, and you can even find seats and a fence to lean your rode on. There are many fishermen on the pier, but it is huge so there is enough space for everybody. But even if you are not a fisherman, it can be fun just to seat on one of the many benches here, and watch the water and the fisherman trying their luck. Fishing while airplanes arriving to JFK above you, what can be cooler that that? I went here on a Tuesday afternoon, so it wasn't crowded at all. I am not sure about the weekend. read more

I've been to Canarsie Pier a few times for pier fishing. I usually come when it's still dark outside, like around 5a.m..And there's already a few fishermen here most days. It's a huge space, plenty of room for everyone so there's never really any crowding issues for fishing when it gets busy. I have caught stripe bass and Oyster Toadfish (ugly little things). I've noticed there's quite a bit of garbage laying around during those hours, so clearly someone's not doing their job..lol A little far from where I live, but overall, not a bad fishing spot. read more

I use to love coming here with my little sister! So much to do! Kayaking BBQ/ pinic area fishing and the clean little "beach" off to the side of the pier! This year though, I have noticed that the area is not being kept clean! The beach area is covered in so much trash, i saw two kids find an umbrella stick in the water! The beach needs a serious cleaning and maybe some trash cans so People have a place to throw the trash! The BBQs have so much build up! It's not even worth trying to clean them and I see many pol now bringing equipment from home. The pier was a beautiful and peaceful place to come with your family, but now Everytime we come here I just spend the entire time making sure no one steps in glass or find something horrible in the grass. The one good thing left here is the fishing! I just wish the parks department would keep this place in better shape! Canarsie Pier is a Nice place to relax watch people fishing and watch the waves. Im sad to say it is NOT cleaned properly. Mr Graves, park worker, cannot do it alone. The leftover fish straps on the pier's edges from months ago has stained the stone and has not been cleaned for months. . It just needs a Good sweeping all around the pier and to find out how other fishing piers maintain their areas. It can be Disgusting at times especially the Restroom which smells of Urine every time I, come to relax. Miss the resturant. read more

I was only here for a short time, just stopped because I was in the area. Yes, I'll say it's run down and there isn't much to see...maybe, yes, it's dirty BUT it's a part of NY. After most of NY has been knocked down and turned into condos and huge buildings made of glass without any artistic delights (no carvings, no gargoyles, nothing) it's really nice to see something that's not so perfect. This is a place to stop and just stare at the water purely for the nostalgic feel of somewhere in NY. No, don't go out of your way to go here. No, don't make this one of the spots you frequent. No, this isn't the place to stop if you need to go to the bathroom. Nope, it's not your first date either. But if you happen to be in the area, want to wait out the legendary belt parkway parking lot and it's a nice afternoon...just sit and gaze at the water a bit, it's inspiring. it's quiet. Be inspired. So I've lived in Canarsie for over a decade and it really wasn't until last year that I truly started to explore this park (it is considered a national park). The pier itself is loaded with people of various backgrounds, plenty of benches and trees for shading standing tall right near the benches. There is a picnic area with at least about 12 round wooden tables that are surprisingly very strong and stable because the weather seems to not have had any effect on their conditioning and they never replaced them. Look like they've been there since the 70s lol. There is even a beach to walk down and people generally do swim in the water, kids too. So, I kind of want to walk you through what i'm seeing as I walk up Rockaway Pkwy to get to the pier. Here it goes: Walking up the left side of Rockaway Pkwy about to cross Shore Pkwy which is the street in front of the west bound entrance of the Belt Pkwy, there is a green bike lane and sidewalk that follows around the circle and leads you to the side entrances of the pier. As you walk up, depending on the day you'll catch a face full of sun, the scent of BBQ pits burning (I believe there are 3-5 stationary pits in total) inside the picnic area to the left, a water sprinkler for the hot summer days that is conveniently situated away from concrete in the grass but is actually matted so it makes it hard to slip and the mat is soft enough so you'd reduce the likelihood of sustaining serious injuries. Walk further left you will notice the bike/walk path that actually travels pretty far down the belt pkwy (i'd say it goes from Mill Basin, could be further, all the way into Queens) I've actually on a few occasions needed to grab something from Best Buy and I literally rode my bike up this path to Gateway Plaza Mall in less than 15 mins and it has a pretty chill scenery. As you follow the path going further east, you will notice an opening to the beach on your right hand side. The first thing you will notice is the jetty straight ahead that looks to be surrounding what appears to be a huge drain pipe (I wonder if that's how the water in the streets of Canarsie exits when it rains since this area is below sea level (see pics of Canarsie after Hurricane Sandy online). Walking closer to the sand, there is a tree on the right hand side which conveniently seems to have grown its roots out to resemble a bench and I often sit under that tree, its my favorite spot on the whole beach. The beach is pretty special. Why? For one its not a commercial beach. So its not filled with large amounts of people, located near a bunch of stores or even have a lifeguard on duty. Hell, there's even a sign that tells you not to swim in the water. Mess around and get pinched up by a crab lol jk. Its riddled with nature and wild life from horseshoe crabs, field mice, possums, clams, rabbits and pretty often rare birds other than pigeons aka rats with wings. I've seen them all. Closer to sunset you will often times find fishermen and even whole families on the beach hanging out and even digging for the clams that bury themselves deep in the sand as the tide recedes. Now, i'm not telling you that you can, because it is tricky to do without completely breaking the law but I every once in a while will light a small camp fire a few feet from the water just to vibe out with. Yes, CAMP FIRE (at least 20 feet from anything flammable, 3-4 ft deep and 4-5 ft wide) Lets walk back to the main entrance and walk down the middle of the pier. Here, you have your fishermen, couples, families relaxing, a small playground for children, HUGE parking lot, an ice cream truck is always situated just outside the pier but inside the parking lot is another truck which happens to be like a food truck/store. Haven't ordered cooked food from the truck in years but i'm sure its nothing to really write about. Burgers, hot dogs, chips, drinks, small stuff. A building for Parks and Recreation services is in the lot as well to the right where you can also find public restrooms. I never been in them so I couldn't tell you much about them. There are checkered tables for the gamers of the mind located towards the end of the pier. The fishermen got it made too. The P&R staff had most recently started installing butcher tables and fish slop containers so people can clean their fish and properly dispose of the remains right on the pier.. All in all, its a very peaceful place to come relax at. Watching the sunrise here is amazing. Hell just finding somewhere to sit and watching the planes come and go from JFK is just as satisfying at getting your mind to come to a full ease. I always like to recommend coming here to have BBQs and gatherings. The one thing that makes this place unfavorable to many who don't live in Canarsie is, well, if they don't live in Canarsie or drive, its too far. You have the B17, B42 & B103 that are the closest MTA buses. So for us who live here, its our little gem for Peace Away From City Streets..... read more

This is a Rockway Parkway Bound L- Train- We have all heard this Staccato Statement studdered, barely audible, through the rusty L train speakers--- Nowadays The L train has changed- its clean inside- But its still makes the same trip to .... CANARSIE- This pier is located in the Gateway National Rec Area- and this has got to be one of the least scenic spots of this sick park. Its basically, no its actually about 3/4 parking lot with a periphery containing a walk way with people fishing, necking, and otherwise acting hopeless. Its a place where peolpe go to read the paper in their cars next to other people reading the paper in their cars. read more

I am not sure what rating to give the pier. Ive lived around here long enough to remember the fancy-ish restaurant the pier used to have, But since Ive gotten older i haven't really been back often. Last time was being buffeted by Hurricane Sandy winds then coming home that night to face the surprising destruction wreaked by the hurricane on much of Canarsie. I guess the reason for my lack of interest that is that there isnt much to do or see aside from the ocean and the Canarsie Pol. Guess I can give the old pier a visit soon. read more

Good fishing pier, with one tiny problem, I rarely saw someone catch a respectful fish here. If you are ok with small king fish and some herrings, you will find what you are looking for here. But if you are into serious fish, that you do not need to measure to know if they are in the right size, maybe there are better fishing spots (But not as comfortable). The pier is huge, with many fishing spots and many places to place your fishing equipment and comfortable seating. On weekends there is a track that sell food and coffee. If you prefer to fish alone, come very early in the morning, I heard that even the fishing is better. read more

I'm was born and raised in Brooklyn and I had never been here. I came with my mom and her husband on the way back from Thanksgiving dinner. We only stayed a few minutes but I saw some people fishing and that was cool to see. Although, I'm sure they are not going to eat the fish, I know I wouldn't. The pier has some seating. I also saw a plane fly over (JFK is not too far away). It wasn't crowded at all but I heard that it gets really crowded during the summer month, which is understandable. I'd like to come back when it's warmer. read more

I use to love this pier... No more... Restrooms closed, port a potties nasty as a sewage plant as the waste goes in... Feces and urine Everywhere... Walls, toilets and floors. I would post pics but I don't think anyone could stomach them... The worker in the office, yes she is really rude and said there is nothing she can do and to deal with or leavedon't worry we're gone... I will be making some formal complaints though... This is not my favorite pier. It is off the Belt Parkway exit 13. Alot of people fish, grill and hangout here. Few tourists come out here. Mainly people who live in the area or in another borough come here. There are plenty views of the bay and you can plenty of fresh air. If you like to fish I highly recommend this place. I am not fisher so this is why I give it 3 stars and I agree with some of the reviews on revitalizing the pier alittle bit. read more

For those who are not familiar with Canarsie Pier, it's off the Belt Parkway EXIT 13 Rockaway Parkway. To sum it up in a few words this place can use a modern revitalization which would bring more revenue, people and fun to this great space. Me and my family decided to have a BBQ here, which the parks department do supply charcoal grills (old, broke, I would not DARE use) if you do not have your own. However, I did see people use their grills and some even brought their own pots/pan of which they put on top of the grill and cooked their food...Yes, it made me go hhhmmm but It worked for them! If you don't get there early you will bake in the sun and be covered with dirt in order to get somewhat of a decent space. You will see plenty of people fishing, digging for clams and flying their kites. This past summer every weekend they offered FREE Kayaking which I must say was absolutely beautiful as most other places were charging! The water was very shallow for those who can't swim (like me) or afraid of ocean water (like me) and you MUST wear a life vest. read more
