Great park! Friendly people and nice dogs. There are lots of trails and an off leash area! Benches, picnic tables, trash cans. Parking lot. Open dawn to dusk.

My little ones.

We love to bring our dogs to the neighborhood Canine Corners Dog Park (inside Harry Griffin Park). There's a small dog play park and a large dog play park side by side, separated by a fence. Although, if you have a large dog beware of some small dog owners that don't follow the rules and have them in the large dog park. It's a nightmare waiting to happen. There's tons of toys, pooper scoopers, chairs and water buckets. The park is all sand and your dog(s) will have lots of playmates and you'll have lots of neighbors to talk with.

I'd added parks in La Mesa and surrounding areas to my favorites in a map app a while ago,…read moreintending to check them out but hadn't. I was in the area of this park recently, and passed a parking area while driving on Bancroft. I was in need of a restroom so I turned at the first road after and that led to another, smaller parking area. I parked there, found the restroom I needed, then walked around a little bit. The park is on a slope. There is a covered area for family or company picnics@ some sort of a ball court. I walked down the slope to the other parking area. A dog would find plenty to sniff around at, but I didn't see much so I headed back to my truck. The parking area started filling. Some cars and vans with their clients, on outings. Some guy parked next to me was talking to himself and dumped what looked like grocery store dumpster finds out behind his vehicle, I guess to go through them. And commenting on stuff in my direction. Ok, time to go. 10 am by then so I made a mental note to come early again next time.

You would have to take quite a turn after seeing the sign on Bancroft if you are driving from the Valley Farm Market. Parking spots looked quite limited as there was only one way in and then one way out. The table we got was perfect for us to enjoy our BBQ ribs, chicken, and salads under the eucalpytus trees. But would say some of the other seating areas were pretty much in the sun, so wish there was a bit more shade to those closer to the parking lot. The area looked very family friendly, lots of shade, and the grassy areas looked perfect for dogs to run around. I read in another review that dogs aren't allowed there but don't think I saw the sign during our visit there, so might have missed it. The dogs that were there that day were quite friendly and no one seemed to mind. There were two pavilion areas towards the left of the park which were well shaded where parties can be hosted. Bathrooms are nearby the higher elevated one. Overall looked like a decent park.

I was pleasantly surprised to see such a welcome update to the south-facing green area of the park. The city of course had to uproot about a dozen big trees for this project but better that, than remain a homeless haven. Next to the courts, the city also built a pro-shop where paid members can hangout, buy refreshments and use the clean restrooms. Members also have the benefit of reserving a court. The wall separating the courts from the apartment complex is made with sound-absorbing material, the benches are shaded and there are properly designated paddle racks for each of the five courts. I was the second pickleball player to arrive for the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting of the newly built pickleball courts. It was cool to see the usual suspects - friends I play with at Bostonia Rec Center and Lakeside courts, as well as new faces. This being the second El Cajon public pickleball court, me and my friends already started planning the days we will play here. This will most likely become another popular venue and one that will be maintained since local city leaders and council members are avid pickleball players themselves.

The enclosed area is a good size and there's a separate spot for small dogs however I am not sure if I like or hate that the large dog section is pure dirt. On one hand I feel maybe my dog won't catch fleas because there is no humid grass but on the other when we play fetch I fear she will get Little Rock's and dirt in her eye and mess it up. (This happened to my dogs brother when playing in the dirt and required a vet visit for corneal ulcers) My dog got dirt and rocks all over her mouth playing which isn't the worst but also not ideal. I think I rather just walk her around all the park in the future even tho it is nice to unleash her in the enclosed area. I appreciated that there was plenty of water and toys around. There was also a good stack of chairs and trees to sit under for some shade in the large dog area. I mentioned to beware of other owners and dogs though because when I arrived there was a large group of people and their dogs. The people hung out chatting and dogs were out dogging. No issues. Mine was greeted and pressed by a few but she minds her business and we went on to play in the back. Like another comment has said some dogs do get territorial and not all get along and that's fine AS long as owners take care and know how to handle their dogs personality. The dog that pressed mine luckily backed off when my dog didn't engage but not all will be that way. Unfortunately while I was there a nice dog named Buddy came with his dog sitter and got along just fine with my dog and the other two there. He was roaming around chilling. However an older bearded man and his white canine came in and immediately the new dog attacked buddy at the entrance and the man did not stop it. Buddy was bitten and hurt pretty badly. He was much smaller than the white dog that came in. He left unable to walk, dazed, and bleeding from his head. I felt so bad for the dog sitter, the dog buddy, and the owner receiving the phone call. And the man whose dog attacked walked away and just brushed it off saying "hope your dogs okay it happens". I can tell you NO it doesn't just happen because the 20 dogs there before didn't attack anyone else's dog. I wanted to help buddy and the dog sitter and didn't think to get the guys info. I was also scared and got my leash and my dog quickly out of there. So all this to say please careful and be watching your dog and close enough to step in and grab the BACK legs of your dog to stop a fight. We all go there to have a good time but times like that make me scared to go back tbh. Some owners are just irresponsible or careless and vet bills are expensive. My poor baby didn't want to leave but I was not about to risk it and not sure if I'll be able to go back after that. There should be signs with info on local vets or instructions on what to do if your dog starts a fight or sign that they might in order to prevent things like that.

The park is small but has what is needed. There are BBQ areas and picnic tables as well as some grass and a small playground. There is also some parking available in a lot but you can also park on the street. The playground is fenced in which I really liked but it also has to be fenced in because this park is right on the street, and it's a busy one with a lot of speeders. I was very aware of the closure to the playground ensuring everyone who came and went closed it behind them and if not going to it immediately to make sure it got closed. The playground equipment is small but had some slides the kids liked and a few swings. There are also 2 stationary play cars my boys loved so much. Although the boys had fun here we won't come back because of how close this is to the road. If we aren't in the playground area and we wanted to have a picnic it would be a constant worry and I wouldn't be able to let me kids get more than an arms reach away from me. There are better parks to go to.
