This is a nice park with plenty of space and plenty to do. They also have a dog park, which is where I went. The dog park is nice with pooper scoopers to clean up. Toys for the pups to play with. The park was okay but beware of other owners and their dogs and lack of supervision. See end of post for more. The enclosed area is a good size and there's a separate spot for small dogs however I am not sure if I like or hate that the large dog section is pure dirt. On one hand I feel maybe my dog won't catch fleas because there is no humid grass but on the other when we play fetch I fear she will get Little Rock's and dirt in her eye and mess it up. (This happened to my dogs brother when playing in the dirt and required a vet visit for corneal ulcers) My dog got dirt and rocks all over her mouth playing which isn't the worst but also not ideal. I think I rather just walk her around all the park in the future even tho it is nice to unleash her in the enclosed area. I appreciated that there was plenty of water and toys around. There was also a good stack of chairs and trees to sit under for some shade in the large dog area. I mentioned to beware of other owners and dogs though because when I arrived there was a large group of people and their dogs. The people hung out chatting and dogs were out dogging. No issues. Mine was greeted and pressed by a few but she minds her business and we went on to play in the back. Like another comment has said some dogs do get territorial and not all get along and that's fine AS long as owners take care and know how to handle their dogs personality. The dog that pressed mine luckily backed off when my dog didn't engage but not all will be that way. Unfortunately while I was there a nice dog named Buddy came with his dog sitter and got along just fine with my dog and the other two there. He was roaming around chilling. However an older bearded man and his white canine came in and immediately the new dog attacked buddy at the entrance and the man did not stop it. Buddy was bitten and hurt pretty badly. He was much smaller than the white dog that came in. He left unable to walk, dazed, and bleeding from his head. I felt so bad for the dog sitter, the dog buddy, and the owner receiving the phone call. And the man whose dog attacked walked away and just brushed it off saying "hope your dogs okay it happens". I can tell you NO it doesn't just happen because the 20 dogs there before didn't attack anyone else's dog. I wanted to help buddy and the dog sitter and didn't think to get the guys info. I was also scared and got my leash and my dog quickly out of there. So all this to say please careful and be watching your dog and close enough to step in and grab the BACK legs of your dog to stop a fight. We all go there to have a good time but times like that make me scared to go back tbh. Some owners are just irresponsible or careless and vet bills are expensive. My poor baby didn't want to leave but I was not about to risk it and not sure if I'll be able to go back after that. There should be signs with info on local vets or instructions on what to do if your dog starts a fight or sign that they might in order to prevent things like that. read more

Three separate dog enclosures offer dog owners the opportunity to exercise the dogs in the most appropriate place. Most dog owners are local to the area, but are very welcoming to newcomers. Outside of the fenced dog park, there is plenty of additional park to walk your dog on-leash. The trails are wonderful expiration places for on-leash dogs. People are social. Harry Griffen is a great park overall. It is large and relatively well maintained. If your dog is recall trained, although probably not allowed, other owners play with their dogs off leash in the open grass area outside of the dog park and have a great time. Proceed with caution when visiting the actual dog park with your pup. After one visit, I will not be coming back. I want to reiterate what other reviewers have mentioned, local dog owners and their dogs are very territorial within the dog park. If you are not "one of them", you should have your guard up, and they probably want to keep it that way. All dog owners should understand that a majority of dogs are similar to humans and are selective in the dogs they play with. There will be times when some dogs are too energetic for them or play too aggressively. This is normal and makes it important for all responsible owners to be attentive with how their dog is responding to other dogs. A lot of the owners here are not as attentive with their dogs. They are sitting around talking to each other or on their phones. I can also tell this dog park attracts larger dogs that need more exercise beyond the dog park and are not getting much exercise beyond their regular visit to this dog park. This combination of lack of attention from owners and pent up energy from larger dogs is a recipe for aggressive behavior and dog fights taking place regularly. read more

Dog park review #5 - This is so close to being 5 stars and I really did fall in love with this park...I'd say it's like a 4 1/2 really. Little Italy Dog Park will always be my favorite of all time until I venture out of San Diego county but this one comes 2nd! LOCATION: right by grossmont high school / El Cajon la Mesa area. It's probably thee biggest park I have ever been to. We are talking like balboa park sizing. Who would of thought. It's massive! Once we drove onto the property I was in AWE. PARKING: ugh, perfection. A million spots makes Sara happy! SIZE: So once you drive all the way until it ENDS, you'll come to the dog park. The dog park has three gate openings. One area is for ALL DOGS WELCOME - one area is for SMALL DOGS ONLY - and an additional ALL DOGS WELCOME. There is plenty of room for everyone. We took bubba to the small dog area at first, but eventually went to the all dog area. He makes friends quickly :) CLEANLINESS: There are tons of water bowls, water, a leash harness holder rack, a porter potty for the pup parents...I didn't see any poopie bags but just make sure to bring your own. DOG POPULATION: on the weekday in the middle of the day there were at least 5 dogs in the small dog area, including a PUG ugh. Perfection, thats bubbas new girlfriend. In the ALL dog area - around 10. Not crowded by any means, not overwhelming, yet not too little at the same time. It's a perfect mix. We have already brought our fur baby to this park twice now. We love that there is so much room, so many places for us to sit, including in the shade. The park is so huge that my bubba gets lost behind the trees and disappears. He likes his alone private time tho with other dogs so I let him be....he gets tons of kisses here. That bubba is a little flirt!!! The only down side for me is the sand. I get it....dogs get dirty. I get it. I just can dream right? Like...In my perfect world there would be half turf or some kind of turf area. So that I don't have to give bubba a bath as soon as we get home. Quarantine Review 2021: Nice, big, and open! I bring my pup here all the time and he loves the nice sand (instead of wood chips) and plenty of fun puppy action! The park is divided into 3 areas - one for small dogs, one for big ones, and one (the biggest one) for doggos of all sizes! Each section has lots of chairs and benches so you can sit and read while your best buddy burns some energy. The folks that bring their dogs here are really good about respecting social distancing and wearing masks when close to one another. The good news is there's so much space, it's easy to find a nice, safe distance from folks while still being close enough for a conversation. Sometimes the dogs can get a little rough with their playing, but the owners seem to be pretty on top of it and break up any scuffles quickly. Overall, it's a really pleasant dog park inside an even bigger human park, and with plenty of parking to boot! read more

Love Harry Griffen Dog Park. There are three separate enclosures for all dogs, small dogs, etc. We have two very different dogs--a big young dog that loves to run and play with other young energetic dogs. He had some socialization problems when we first got him, but this park has really helped. There are never too many people or dogs there, a lot of people go frequently at the same times, so it helped him become more relaxed. We also have a small dog under 20 lbs who gets along well with big dogs, and she has lots of fun, too. Great place! read more

So I can't take Vader to regular dog parks- but the open space all around this dog park is HUGE. I keep Vader on a long leash, but there is plenty of space to let him run around in that capacity. It's a well managed park with plenty of grass and play areas and has a short but decent walking path. It's not Fiesta Island, but it's pretty dang nice for what we need. It's still best to know your dog before letting him run around in the doggy area, and keep an eye on him/her as you won't know what other peoples' dogs can do, but over all, it seems like a good place. read more

Disappointed in this park yesterday. People don't like to watch their dogs! I've been coming here since I moved to the area because I like the location and the amount of dogs that are there. My dog is very friendly and loves to run with other dogs. I usually take him on the side where all sizes are welcome because my dog is about 30 lbs which is a little bigger than the average "small dogs". Yesterday, he was there playing and running, but after about half an hour there was a dog not much bigger than him that wouldn't leave him alone. I automatically assumed they were just playing until my dog gave side that he was attacking back. My dog has been well trained and is not the type to fight other dogs unless he feels attacked or he needs to. If it something minor that he can walk away from or avoid, he will. This dog however got to aggressive that when I tried to stop him from biting my dog after seeing him attempt to multiple times, THE DOG ALMOST BIT ME! I wasn't just worried for my dog, but when I asked around whose dog it was, no one knew and no one would help me with my situation even though they saw the dog being aggressive. I immediately took my dog out, but I stood outside the gate still trying to figure out who the owner was. Everyone sits in this area in the center of the park talking but they obviously aren't really paying attention. It's not that big to not be able to see if you're really trying. I never did find out who the owner was but I read in the rules 1. all sizes are welcomed on that side, 2. you need to keep watch and an eye on your dog at all times, and 3. you must remove your dog is they become aggressive at any point. Not sure if I'm bringing my dog back here after that. read more

**Watch out for these dogs in the small dog section** I like that this dog park has separate areas for large dogs, small dogs, and a third section for the less social dogs. I rarely have any issues here and the other dog parents have always been friendly. With one exception. There is this man that regularly brings his two medium-largish dogs into the small dog area. If you are there on a Saturday morning and see two fluffy poodle-like dogs, one is light brown and the other a light tan, you should probably gather your dog and leave right away. Neither of them seem to like dogs that are playful or that have a lot of energy. I've seen them repeatedly snapping and growling quite aggressively toward small dogs that run up to them, and they absolutely HATE my high energy, very social girl. So why is he bringing them to the dog park? Good question! At the very least, he should keep them in the non-social dog section. The dog park is for dogs that like being social and playing with other dogs, and that don't have aggression issues. Period. So this morning I see these two dogs coming into the small dog area where we were having a great time and everyone was playing so nicely. I know we've had problems before so i immediately leash my dog and leave, cutting our time short. I get a few yards out of the dog park when I notice my phone is missing. I go back inside the park to get it with my dog still leashed. One of these fluffy nightmares comes charging up at us and starts snapping and growling at my dog. He was literally on top of her while she postured submissively underneath. I try to pull my girl away and yelled at this dog to stop when the owner comes over, pulls his dog away and then proceeds to blame ME for the incident. I barked back as he was putting his dog in the non-social area (where it belongs!) He says, "You did nothing to stop it. We all saw what happened." Oh, you mean everyone saw YOUR aggressive dog charge up and start attacking my dog completely unprovoked? Literally no one is going to take your side on this, pal. I just wanted to run in quick, get my phone and get the hell out of there. As we were walking away, safely away from these jerks, I see one of his dogs go after another dog and he had to pull him off again!! Obviously my dog is not the only one your dogs snap at. My dog has never been aggressive and loves playing with all dogs (even the ones that don't like her so much) and I get it that her high energy can be too much for some. But if your dog consistently acts aggressive at the dog park, you are RUINING it for everyone else! I've gotten nothing but compliments on how sweet my dogs personality is. She absolutely loves being social with everyone, dogs and people, which is why I take her there. Unfortunately non-social dogs and arrogant jerks who don't see that their dogs are clearly the problem are making me not want to go anymore. It's really sad that one person can put such negative energy on what was otherwise a very fun morning full of healthy playtime for my dog. read more

We have personally witnessed not 1 but 2 DOG ATTACKS, both of which resulted in emergency surgeries!!!! THIS IS A HUGE ISSUE. First time here. Doesn't look as big as it actually is from the outside. We have two small dogs and normally they always play in the large, general dog area. My brother said they wouldn't do well here and I figured it out why pretty quickly. This is the only dog park I've been to where the owners are so non responsive to their dogs. A large dog barked endlessly at another dog across the fence for over 10 minutes and no owner was in sight. Then, a small dog came in to our area and another ran up to it and kept snarling and lunging at the newcomer. Again, no owner in sight. Every time a new large dog came in, at least 5 or 6 others hounded it. I'd definitely recommend keeping your smaller dog separate. I heard more barking here than any other dog park. That being said, it does the biggest small dog area I've seen. I liked that it had hooks to hang your leashes and plenty of seating and shade for humans. Despite the lack of attention from owners, my dogs had a good time and this park is really nice. 95% soft dirt so be mindful of the shoes you're wearing. Would definitely come again, especially considering both sides were packed so your pups will definitely get exercise and social interaction. read more

If you have kids, you've taken your kid to a park. Sometimes there are inattentive parents who sit back and chat,and pretend they don't notice their kid shoving your kid into the dirt repeatedly. At other times, the parents who happen to be there are involved. This is kind of what this park is like. It's very hit and miss. Sometimes there are great dogs and owners there, and other times there are owners like the one who was here last time. His dog had my dog pinned against the fence, her hackles raised, biting and chasing down my dog every time he tried to move. He told me, "Oh, she's just playing," - right before he pulled his dog away and held her to the ground to teach her to be more submissive (um, if your dog's just playing, do you need to discipline her like that?) I guess what happens is a group of dogs (especially the regulars) form a pack, and some dogs don't like new dogs coming into the pack. The owners are supposed to be like pack leaders and make their dogs accept the new dogs, but like I said, most just sit back and watch from their chairs. In their absence, there is chaos. I try to save this park for when my husband can come with us and control the other dogs and tell the owners what to do (people will argue with me but never with him-- go figure. Ha). He has had to repeatedly pull aggressive dogs off of ours. Our dog is 65 pounds, but very submissive-- makes him a great kids' pet but not so great in places like this. He panics and runs away and then tries to jump into my arms. I try to come at slower periods. Around 10 am and around 3pm seem to work ok most days. There have been some times when my dog assesses the park and refuses to even go near the fence due to the energy he's sensing. But another couple times, he got to play with some dogs of similar temperament to his, so he's had good times, too. Anyway, proceed with caution. Be prepared to ask other people to call off their dogs or to do it yourself. There are three separate dog areas, one for small dogs, one for large, and one indeterminate. Sometimes people bring in their small dogs to the large dog area, which I don't think is a good idea. My dog loves small dogs (he thinks he is about 10 pounds) but my friend's dog thinks they are delicious little snacks. Use good judgement. read more

I was hoping that this place would be a good place to take my 65lb, very passive dog. We love dog beach and the dog park at balboa park as there are similar sized dogs who like to wrestle and chase. This park is mostly populated by very large, aggressive dogs. Multiple scuffles with teeth bared while there. There are pooper scoopers and many poop bag dispensers around the park and still endless landmines for the unwary to step in. Could be a great facility. Thank heaven for dog lovers! Being new to the neighborhood, I was in search for a dog park in San Carlos, Del Cerro area. Looks as though this is the best bet even though it's in La Mesa...but just a hop skip and a jump away :) The park is visited by their regulars, not to mention financially upheld by its residents--the city does not maintain this, so what a beautiful community gesture. NOTE: the address given brings you to a house a few doors down from the actual entrance to the park, so just look for a driveway straight ahead and follow it alllll the way left until you can't park any further...can't miss it. The evening crowd after 2:30 is awesome! Lots of dogs, they actually play! And friendly!! The weekends, especially on Saturday are super packed. Half of the people don't clean up their dog poop. The review is mostly for the crowd at this particular dog park, but that kind of makes or breaks a good 'dog park' experience. Before I moved to San Diego, I loved going to my local dog park. I understand that it gets 'clique-y,' but at least the dog park I went to greeted new comers- some would actually start conversations with you. However, Harry Griffin Dog Park, not that way at all. I felt like the people in the chairs kind of just watches you as you walk in (walk of shame?) Possibly even judging you to see if your dog was "alright" to come in. Like I said, everyone was sitting in their chairs chatting away, while their dogs kinda runs around. Owners can be a little more attentive with their dogs. The park itself is alright- there is a lot of sand, so it can get dusty. It is also split into three sections: 1) Big dogs, 2) Small dogs, 3) mixture? I hear a lot of screeches from Canine Corners, so beware. I enjoy just letting my dogs off-leash outside of the dog park area. A lot of people seem to do it, but I'd wait to see if the people around the area looks like they'd be okay with it first. read more

Furthermore, the center small dog area is for dogs 'under' 30 pounds/18 in tall. Please do not take your dogs that are over 30 pounds into this area, it is appreciated. That is one of many rules of this park that is posted and we cannot maintain happiness at the park if you do not abide by the rules. Please pickup your dog poop as dog park is self maintained. Taken the animal friends here a couple of times. I like that there are three sections: one for small dogs, one for large dogs and one where you can intermingle. It seems that the owners that frequent this park are all pretty close and know each other. Every time I go it's mostly the same people. What I haven't liked about this place is that it's all dirt no grass. When the dogs get crazy and start running around the dirt really picks up and gets all over the place. Since the sections are only divided by chain-linked fences the dogs can see each other big and small, and some go a little psychotic and like to run back and forth from one end to the other. Unfortunately they get most of the dogs to do that next thing you know you can't even hear yourself think because all you hear is the commotion and ruckus. My dogs don't partake in any of that action and end up huddling close, since they don't flash their wild side to often. I always end up leaving soon after 10-15 minutes because they don't even bother with the other dogs. I think it's really up to your dog to decide whether they like it or not. Check it out. read more

I took my two older, well trained dogs to this dog park for the first time yesterday. There was one dog that was openly aggressive, but the owner laughed it off, even as it barked at me and my son. (My dogs maintained decorum.) The other people acted like it was ok to have aggressive dogs in a public park. Maybe the owner,and the other dog owners sitting in group, feel it is their private park. After being attacked and made unwelcome, as soon as my 12 year old dog relieved himself one person made a pointed remark about it before I had a chance to get over to it and it clean up. The park was a dust bowl in the heat, she acted like I was the one who dumped. It was a most unwelcoming place to be. There was a reporter there from a local outlet. I wonder what his impressions were? I would not recommend this park to anyone. read more

Bringing older intact males into the park is not a good idea.. Owners should give the rest of the people a heads up if their dog isn't fixed before letting their dog in the park. It just causes ruckus and problems. My dogs are both fixed but I understand others rights to choose not to.. I just wish those who don't fix their dogs would be more responsible and leave them at home. Do your research folks. It's not just opinion, it's science.. for the safety of all dogs in the park! I do enjoy this park (speaking from the large dog area) and go at least 3 times a week.. This is our neighborhood dog park, and we come once in a while to let our dogs stretch their legs and socialize. We have never had a problem with any other dogs and there is always a volunteer or council member around to share useful information on the park events and even the other visitors' pets. It is well-maintained and a nice place to let Spot run around without worrying about him. There are 3 different fenced areas, generally for small dogs, big dogs, and then for whomever wants a little more privacy I guess. Canine Corners is a great dog park! Lots of shade from trees and shade structures. Large runs for the doggies to get out all their wiggles. Plenty of chairs and benches to utilize. Water spigots and water buckets are in the runs. Canine Corners Dog Park is funded and maintained 100% by donations. Volunteers provide the maintenance. We go to this park very often and enjoy the friendly people and dogs. If you visit, please be a respectful dog owner by abiding to the simple park rules and cleaning up after your pup! The best dog park we have found so far in San Diego! They have three separate areas, one for large dogs, one for small dogs, and one other additional area. I've seen the third area used a lot for dogs with behavioral issues, because there are usually no other dogs in there. Our little beagle is usually in the small dog area. It has many seating options available for the humans. For the dogs, there are toys, water bowls, poop bags and pooper scoopers ready. It is mostly a dirt floor, but my dog loves it and I don't mind that at all. When we get a chance to go during the middle of the day, there usually aren't any small dogs there, but always a big dog or two. The owners are always friendly, and when there aren't any small dogs for my dog to play with, they always are happy for me to put my dog in with the big dogs so she can play. Whats great about this park: 1. Pretty close to my house 2. Fenced area for both small and large dogs 3. Lots of toys for dogs to play with What's not so great: 1. The dog park is all sand, no grass Unfortunately, the lack of grass outweighs the good stuff about this park. I'd be willing to take my dogs to a park further away as long as it has grass. read more

I used to like going here but i went here yesterday, and usually i like to walk about the area to get some exercise and encourage my dog to follow every once in a while to keep an eye on him. I don't think i want to come back. There is an old British lady with an accent that quickly judged me about keeping an eye on my dog and when he went #2 and of all the days i decided to sit at the bench by the entrance because its been warm lately (and I'm 6 months pregnant). She immediately had a radar of some sort that kept an eye on my dog (a Siberian husky) and had a attitude like a pooping dog is shameful and full of disgrace but i just brushed it off like whatever. THE REAL ISSUE WAS WHEN MY DOG POOPED A SECOND TIME. I didn't see him cause i was on my phone playing a game and they were sitting on top of the bench, not the seat bit where you put your stuff, so i couldn't see my dog pooping. THE LADY STARTS TALKING TRASH ABOUT HOW THE TEXTURE WAS SIMILAR TO THE FIRST POOP MY DOG DID. THEN IMMEDIATELY STARTS SAYING AND I QUOTE "your dog pooped over there, as a dog owner you need to pay attention to what your dog is doing and pick up after him. I don't have a dog here and i know this". That really bugged me because i was not bothering her or her friend, they were gossiping about who knows what and then tells me that i am not doing a good job on watching my dog while she has no right or reason to be there and tell other people that they are not on it about picking up after their dog. I was so upset i left cause i couldn't handle it and the pregnancy hormones were starting to take over. I wish i was able to take a pic of the lady who talked bad about me so i could show you what that person looks like. She was about 50-60 years old with blonde hair. read more
