This review is long overdue and quite honestly embarrassing that we haven't taken the time to write our genuine thoughts and opinions for a company and staff we think so highly of. If you do not want to continue reading this heart felt novel, skip to LONG STORY SHORT (Spoiler Alert: It's a happy ending). We'll be the first to admit that we were hesitant to put our beloved pup through a program that utilizes e-collar. We automatically judged based on the stigma of shock collars and lack of education (psttt...word of advice e-collars are different from shock collars; they are NOT the same - do your own research). After researching their extensive and detailed website, reading reviews (I'm assuming that's probably why you're here :) ), watching multiple videos on their YouTube channel, doing a virtual consultation and 3 day daycare evaluation - we can confidently say we made the best choice by choosing Canine Perspective's training methods. Jesse and the crew are authentic, genuine and keep it real on the daily. Don't expect any sugar coating - if that's what you need to feel good about yourself and your fur baby you should probably stop reading this review and look for a different trainer. Also if you're not one to believe in discipline for your dog, setting boundaries, or even saying "no" - again you should reconsider finding a trainer that will better fit your personal needs and not the needs of your dog. The Low Down on Why We Chose Canine Perspectives: Zoey was a major puller on leash (harnesses, martingale collar, gentle leaders, and metal leashes didn't work), prey drive was high, she was overstimulated when approaching or seeing other dogs, and positive reinforcement training was not working. Yes, you read that correctly positive reinforcement of "good girl" and constant high value treats when she did something right DID NOT WORK. It made going for walks unbearable especially living near major, busy city intersections and unsafe because her reactions were unpredictable. What Services We Have Used: Daycare, Boarding and Individual Training Training: 2 words - guaranteed results. We saw results instantaneously and those results keep improving every day. Why? Because Jesse prepares you for realistic situations and utilizes effective methods that enable your dog to be predictable, focused and well-mannered amongst many city life variables (ex. Fire truck sirens, fireworks, random squirrels). Also, don't be fooled - the results happen more quickly because of the additional time and effort you (as a dog owner) put into to reinforce the learnings from the training sessions. After 6 hands-on private trainings Zoey no longer pulls while on walks, heels on command, and has a consistent and reliable off-leash "come" even with various distractions (dogs, squirrels, birds). This training helped and prepared us to welcome a human baby home without having any issues. The 'place' command is god-send for a now very mobile child. Daycare: their structured daycare schedule works. With their consistent schedule, Zoey has never had an accident at home compared to other daycares we have used. Zoey always comes home clean, calm, collected and both mentally and physically content. She doesn't ever have excessive energy or is overstimulated from constant play. They have SUPER clean facilities, each dog has their own personalized water bowl, and they know each dog personally - also by social media account too :) . In the warmer Chicago months, they also go on pack walks around the neighborhood to find the latest murals from local artists. In the winter months, there are treadmills at their Logan Square facility. Boarding: straightforward service that is very similar to the Daycare experience. Our pup enjoys her staycations and as dog parents, we never have a worry in the world. Why we love the Canine Perspective Crew... If you have a question, concern or need - they take the time to listen and provide advice or a solution within a timely manner. We brought home a 16 week old australian cattle puppy in March 2019. We were told that our puppy was friendly, social with people and dogs, and a sweet cuddly boy. While he has always been very sweet to us, he was aggressive towards everyone else. When on walks, he would lunge and try to bite people who approached us. He would try to herd friends who came over and bit several toes, calves, shins, and ankles. He would lunge and viciously bark at other dogs who were just passing by, even on the other side of the street. We loved our puppy but had no idea where to begin with training and correcting these behaviors. We met with two trainers. The first trainer used aggressive corrective techniques that we did not agree with, and told us she'd return him to the breeder because he was too stubborn to learn and too aggressive to train. We were distraught and met with another trainer a few days later. The new trainer used positive reinforcement. She was nice, but focused more on obedience than behavior and after spending a lot of money on 6 sessions, our puppy knew how to sit, but made little progress in the real problem areas like reactivity. We were getting desperate and frustrated. Enter Jesse at Canine Perspective. Jesse let us know that our puppy has fear-based aggression. He said that he couldn't promise that our puppy would ever be social and like playing with other dogs, etc. but he did say that he could get our pup to be neutral with people in the home (which was our biggest concern). We loved that Jesse was honest with us about what he could do to help. Through training us (yes, we humans needed a lot of training) on how to correctly use the e-collar to teach our dog which behaviors were not ok, we made progress. It was not easy and it was not quick, but we worked with Jesse for 3 months choosing to do his 12 week program (NOT the puppy program as we started working with Jesse when our ACD was just over 6 months old) and we have made incredible progress. We also began using a prong-collar when on walks which was hugely helpful for gaining more control over pulling and lunging, two behaviors that we have almost completely eliminated. I can now confidently walk my dog without fear of him lunging at strangers (he still has the one-off reactivity to runners and bikers). He has gotten much better with reactivity with dogs as well, I feel that we're getting close to neutral there. But the best part of training has been how wonderful our dog is now inside the house. He has gone beyond neutral and is friendly and sweet to visitors. He loves to bring new guests toys to play with him. Our biggest concern was having kids one day. We recently had friends visit with their 1.5 and 4 year old and our dog was an absolute dream. He was sweet and friendly, let the kids pet him and throw the ball for him, and gave them kisses (licks) on their hands and faces.  Where do I even begin? Thank you doesn't seem to encompass the feeling of gratitude we have towards Jesse. We love having the tools and  knowledge Jesse shared to have a happy dog who has boundaries and is gaining confidence from a structured home environment. Jesse also makes himself available when we have questions or need to correct additional behaviors (barking at the tv, etc.). We are so happy we found the Chicago Dog Whisperer. I tell everyone I know about Jesse and how he's helped us.  We are so happy they've opened a facility in Logan Square as we use Canine Perspective's boarding services and we love that during his stay the training is reinforced and that he has structure. I cannot recommend Jesse enough. I wish I could give more than 5 stars. If you're debating, don't. Set up a consultation, the results are real. You will have to put in the work, but you will have the tools and information you need to change your dogs behavior and make progress. The rest is up to you. read more

Jesse is a dog whisperer. Our dog, Harper, is a 110 pound lab mix. Harper has always been kind and gentle with his family, but at 13 months, he had an experience with a plumber that apparently scarred him and he began showing signs of anxiety and reactivity in situations that he saw as scary. Many of these situations were surprising to us. As a very well-socialized Lincoln Park puppy (dog parks and beaches for days!), it was surprising to us to see Harper begin barking at strangers. Throughout the following year, it became progressively worse, and in fact it caused us to stop taking Harper to dog parks, family events, and even walks became very stressful. (Barking and lunging at strangers is only something you can look past when it's by a fluffy toy dog... but it's not something that is cute when it's by an unpredictable 110 pound dog.) We tried everything. We had many trainers, boot camps, collars, leashes, prescription medications, over the counter medications, alliterative meds, and training styles. Nothing was working. We basically thought we would just never have company over again.. never go to dog parks.. never go to the beach... until we found Jesse. Jesse has a history of training aggressive dogs, so while Harper has never crossed that line with anyone, we knew we wanted someone who had that experience... just in case! With all of our past trainers, we were only told to use positive reinforcement. As an elementary school teacher, I have spent years with children and know very well that no two children are the same. While it would be wonderful if all students (and pets) responded to solely positive reinforcement, it's just not the reality. Jesse uses an e-collar to help train dogs, and his philosophy behind it is extremely profound. I won't even try to explain everything that goes into it, but you should contact him if you want to hear why and how it works. It makes so much sense when he explains it. Using an e-Collar was, at the time, what we considered "last resort. However, after using it with Harper, we will certainly use it with our next dog when he is a puppy. (Side note: I would never suggest someone learn to use the collar without a professional. We would have done it all wrong! Having an expert teacher show us how to use it is what worked.) Jesse's work with Harper has changed our lives. After only 5 sessions together, my husband successfully took Harper to the dog park for the first time last night, and he was walking up to all the strangers for pets! It's a process, but Harper is now learning to manage his anxiety in a healthy way that does NOT involve barking at everyone! We look forward to our next 7 sessions with Jesse and what the future holds for Harper. read more

I came to Jesse with a rescued 70 lb. Amstaff that was left on the street in December of 2015. All things considered, and not knowing anything about where or whom she came from, she was a well-behaved dog. However, there was a biting incident while resource guarding a bone. I had mixed emotions about what my next steps should be, re-home, train, etc. Obviously I was very shooken up by the incident but despite what some people will tell you (FYI DO NOT listen to people in these incidences) I chose to rehabilitate the dog and train myself, as the great wise Cesar says. I learned SO very much from Jesse. We worked together for 8 weeks and the progress, even from the very first day, was remarkable. We did in-home training as my dog spends most of her time at the house and in the yard and this is where most of the problems seemed to be stemming as she works great with other dogs in environments that are not her home (territory). I trained using the electronic collar method. I purchased the brand Jesse recommended and he actually even helped me find a half price one on the internet that had never been used! I still train with it to this day. The approach Jesse took was thoughtful, careful, and confident and it helped me to become a better dog owner and learn how to take control of an anxious/aggressive situation. We addressed the main issues and taught me the tools to use should situations arise in the future, which they do from time to time. But I feel more confident addressing them using his training techniques. Jesse even makes himself available to his clients by phone and email for future questions or issues. I cannot recommend him enough!! If it wasn't for him I may just have listened to people and given my dog up whom likely would have been euthanized after a bite was reported by a pittie :( The thought makes me tear up to this day! Remember: no dogs are bad, they are just being animals. You only need to take the time and have the patience to better equip yourself with the tools on how to control the situation. Canine Perspective has been a blessing for myself and my dog, Gidget, for over a year now. I adopted her from the shelter as a stray puppy- very fearful and nervous of the world around her and without any knowledge of my own on how to navigate through it and try to make things better... for either of us. While some days it's still frustrating to have a rescue with issues, I truly and sincerely can't be more thankful that we did training with CP when we did. Jesse is truly a gifted dog trainer. We had tried several other training programs, but none seemed to work. Our dog remained highly reactive, making even simple walks or having guests over a stressful experience for everyone in the family, especially when children were around. After our initial consultation with Jesse, he assured us we'd see significant improvements within a few sessions. I was skeptical, but Jesse proved me wrong. The transformation was almost immediate. Friends and family couldn't believe the difference--they saw a dog that stayed calmly by our side, even when other dogs barked at him. Jesse taught us valuable skills that not only improved our dog's behavior but also strengthened our bond with him. He helped us understand how dogs perceive the world and interpret the actions of both other dogs and humans. This insight was crucial in realizing why our previous training efforts had failed and why many commonly recommended methods can be counterproductive in managing reactivity. Jesse's approach was incredibly personalized, addressing the specific challenges we faced. He even worked with our kids to ensure consistency across the board. His ability to draw parallels between dog behavior and human behavior made everything click. Plus, he videotaped our sessions, allowing us to revisit them whenever we needed a refresher. Even after our program ended, Jesse and his team continued to support us, promptly responding to any questions we had and providing additional resources. He also steered us away from the more expensive board and train option, insisting we would learn more through direct involvement. He was absolutely right. We signed up for the 6 one-on-one sessions for our 80 lb, 2 year old rescue dog- and we could not be happier with our results. Our dog was not obedient in the slightest before training and wouldn't even respond to his name or sit on command. Jesse not only taught our dog to be obedient on and off leash, but taught us the tools as dog owners to further his training outside of Canine Perspective. Our dog is happier, more mentally stimulated, and obedient during walks, at the park, and during down time in the home. Jesse and his team offer a wealth of knowledge on any dog-related topic, and he is extremely in tune with each individual dogs' needs and how to cater to them in order for them to succeed. Training with Jesse not only molded our dog's behavior, but molded ours as dog owners, ensuring that even in a threatening or unpredicted situation, we can successfully handle it with our dog by our side. We also had a nutrition consultation with Maddie at Canine Perspective since our dog has a sensitive stomach. She was able to give advice on feeding our dog beyond what we were putting in his bowl, and really changed the way we thought about dog nutrition. She's helped us understand the meaning of kibble labels and ingredient lists, and even went over how I should go about storing our dog's food. It was so helpful to speak to someone who had a range of experience feeding dogs both raw and kibble diets, and who could cater to any budgetary or space constraints and create a diet plan with that in mind. Long story short: Every minute of training is worth it- even when walking into class, Jesse will offer advice on other aspects of dog owning catered to your dog- i.e. separation anxiety, enrichment ideas. You will leave feeling more confident in yourself as a dog owner and more trusting in your dog that regardless of what situation comes your way, together you will be able to navigate it with ease. read more

We took our (then) 10 month old, very excitable (and sometimes anxious) black Labrador retriever to Jesse and even after just one training session, our lives were changed. Jesse has unlocked so much for Farley, and for us, to the point where Farley can walk in a perfect heel with us both on and off leash, know his boundaries in how he should behave, and is often complimented on his behavior (and not just his looks). While Canine Perspective offers board and train programs, or daycare and train programs, we opted to do the in-person training where Jesse instructs us on what to do, and we worked with Farley with Jesse's supervision. Jesse explains the "why" behind training in such a great way, which was of great benefit to my fiancee and I for understanding what Farley needs to be the best version of himself, and for Farley to properly know what we're asking of him. We were also recently able to utilize their daycare services, and their boarding services, which are amazing. While some facilities just let the dogs run around all day and do whatever they want, we really appreciate that because he was trained there and we've incorporated that training into our life and in our house, that same training is utilized during daycare, so it's a bit like you get to pick up your dog who has spent all day having some fun socializing with other dogs, but you also have the benefit of knowing he's gotten some training practice in too. If you ever see videos of how structured their daycare/boarding facility is, you'll notice just how quiet it is, which comes from the structure they're implementing. It's been one full year since my pup, Charlie completed training with Jesse & team and it has completely changed my life for the better! I now feel confident taking Charlie everywhere with me and get loads of compliments everywhere we go on what a good boy he is. Plus, having a better understanding of rules and expectations has helped Charlie feel more confident and less anxious generally--which makes me feel like a good dog mom. Before training, walks were almost unbearable due to the constant lunging and twirling and barking (especially at trucks and other dogs). Going for runs were out of the question with how much Charlie pulled and darted around. Taking him out in public was too scary to consider based on his barking and anxiety/aggression towards dogs (and occasionally nipping at humans). I was concerned e-collars wouldn't work (especially trying to train a dog that was older--9 years oldish), or would "change" my dog too much or would hurt him. I'm happy to say my fears were completely unfounded--Charlie is incredibly well behaved now and still loves to act goofy and play and snuggle. If anything, I think our bond has grown stronger and Charlie is happier to accompany me on more adventures! Jesse and team compassionately and professionally worked with my dog's personality and behaviors and helped me feel confident and in control no matter the situation. We are so thankful for our experience with Canine Perspective! We took our (at the time) 10 month old Labrador Retriever for the 12 week one-on-one training with Jesse. We saw improvement immediately and training with Jesse has truly changed our lives. Our dog was able to start to enjoy our walks and no longer would pull with anxious tendencies. We were able to complete all of the training needed for him to be off leash trained within an 8 week time frame and have 4 sessions that we can schedule at our convienance as needed. Fast forward to this week, we utilized the daycare and boarding services for the first time. We decided to opt to put him into daycare for one day a few days prior to boarding him to make sure he acclimated well. This was his first time being boarded so I wanted to make sure he was as comfortable as possible. From the staff thoroughly answering every question I had to walking me through the entire process, it couldn't have been a better experience. Daycare was a success and we knew he was in the best hands for boarding. While we had him boarded for one day the staff posted multiple pictures of him working on his training and socializing with other dogs and also provided me updates on how well he was doing. I could see our dog had the best time and when we picked him up he was calm and collected and totally himself. We have a few more trips this summer and look forward to utilizing Canine Perspective for their daycare and boarding options! read more

I can't sing enough praise for Jesse and his team. I wish I had found them sooner. I started taking my dog, Bailey, to Canine Perspective in March when the shut down started. I am a healthcare worker with long hours. My previous dog daycare center reduced their hours and did not offer pick-up and drop off. Jesse was very accommodating to my schedule and has very reasonable pick up fee. Maria was wonderful with helping my schedule Bailey and accommodating last minute changes in my work schedule. It took so much stress off me knowing Bailey was being well cared for during my shifts. I also noticed a huge change in Bailey within his first week of daycare at Canine Perspective. Bailey is a high energy dog and sometimes gets over-stimulated in chaotic environments. He really thrived in the structured program Jesse provides, and he seemed much more tired and happy after coming home than he did at his prior daycare place. I ended up signing Bailey up for the daycare and train program and it is worth EVERY PENNY. I am just amazed how well Bailey listens now. I never thought I would have a dog that behaves off leash. We sadly had to move last month for my job, and one of the hardest things to leave was Jesse and his team. When we come back to visit friends and family Chicago I will be bringing Bailey so he can spend sometime at CP again and keep working on his skills. Can't recommend this place more. Jess came to my home for intensive training in October of 2016, he came from Chicago and helped us in Minnesota. After two trainers and no improvement, I was desperate for help. I was very grateful that Jess was willing to make the trek to work with my dogs and my family. Jess came to help with one dog, and ended up helping with two, Carly and Goldy. My dogs ran the gamete of issues from constant chaotic barking inside and outside the house to biting people, children and dogs. I needed an expert and Jess was and is that! Jess is an all around solid professional person, who shows a great passion for what he does. He is a hard worker, has not only a good sense and understanding of dogs but also for the dogs owners. He helped us in so many ways. The first day that he was at our house training, was the first day of tranquility and peace, non like we had had in a long time. He spent hours going over different commands, techniques and scenarios with me and all older family members, making sure that we all knew what we were doing and how to handle various situations. Jesse is a truly amazing trainer! I adopted my dog Mowgli from a shelter in Belize where he had lived for about a year. Before that he had been a street dog from birth-6 months old and in that time was found with a rope embedded in his neck so deep he had to have surgery and was almost killed by it! When I got him I was told he was the sweetest dog with both dogs and people which was generally correct but when I took him to get evaluated at a Pet School it turned out he had some nervousness/aggression. The owner of that place told me that Mowgli was going to be WAY too difficult for me to manage (he's 27 pounds) and that I should consider giving him back... It was awful. I got a second opinion by way of Jesse and thank God I did! Although Mo still showed signs of aggression/nervousness, Jesse assured me it was nothing we couldn't correct together. Since working with Jesse for the last 8-10 weeks, Mowgli is the same amazingly sweet dog without any of the nervousness. The first and second sessions were tough and Mo was not having any of it, but now we work without any protective gear/muzzles and he is just amazing to watch. My friends truly can't stop talking about how well behaved he is and I couldn't have done any of it without Jesse! read more

We just picked up our German Shepherd, Chief, from his 2 week board and train with Jesse and team on Monday. We couldn't be happier with the results. From the very first day, the service we received was world class. It all started with the ease of booking the appointment for the initial consultation, Maria was very responsive and informative. Jesse has a clear understanding of dog behavior and was able to clearly translate that with terms that we were able to make sense of. We have a great dog, just a very high drive and easily distracted, so his obedience was very inconsistent. During the time Chief was away, Jesse was always available to give us updates and had an open door policy with scheduling visits. We picked up Chief and with the conditioning that they acclimated Chief to, along with the handling skills that Jesse taught us, Chief has been transformed into a great dog and this is just the beginning. Jesse also eased any of our follow up concerns, with his willingness to help guide us, even after the training is complete. Canine Perspective is well worth the investment. TLDR: Jesse at Canine Perspective is truly the most talented dog trainer I've ever met. I rescued a very reactive, fearful adult dog two years ago and knew I needed the best of the best to help acclimate her to everyday life. After doing a lot of research on the topic, all signs led to Jesse & Canine Perspective. It was truly the best investment we made for our dog as the 1 on 1 training sessions helped empower our rescue dog to enjoy all of the parts of life she was too fearful/reactive to do prior- such as socializing with other dogs, playing fetch at the park, not pulling on the leash during walks or jumping out at trucks/cars, and more. Jesse + his office were super transparent and communicative about expectations, methods, and goals. He is an expert who has years and years of professional + personal experience, and it shows in his work and his results. This is my third dog and I can say from personal experience that not all training is effective, nor worth your money- so when you find someone like Jesse who is- it's worth it. Canine Perspective was the best thing that ever happened to my rescue dog. I initially trained her using positive reinforcement training, but when a dog is instinctually prey driven, offering her treats is not enough to bring her back when she's running across Chicago streets after a bunny. Teaching her boundaries with the use of an e-collar saved her life. She can walk and run off leash and we have full confidence in trust in each other. I can let her live a full life of playing off leash at the park, hunting squirrels, and going on long walks in new territory with her politely next to me. We get to live this life together because of Jesse's training! My dog also attends his daycare where she gets play time, reinforcement training, and pack walks. She gets to go to school instead of just "daycare", which is the best part about sending her to Canine Perspective. I would highly recommend Jesse and his staff at Canine Perspective for all your dog training needs! Jesse really cares for his clients and their dogs and it shows with each training session we had. Our pitbull mix had been having reactive issues and Jesse really changed his life and ours. I am finally able to safely and confidently walk Bruce without fear. I can correct any behaviors on our walk and have been able to improve other behaviors in the house, like barking out the window and at the door when the mail is delivered. We were able to make these changes in Bruce's behaviors because of Jesse. Even after our training package ended, we can still rely on Jesse and his help if we need it, and we have. Those window corrections were able to be made because Jesse made accommodations during the pandemic to meet with us virtually to address the issues. I will not hesitate to use Canine Perspective Chicago in the future. If we ever need daycare or boarding I know exactly where Bruce will be staying. He'll get safe and structured care! read more

This review is way overdue!! Jesse from Canine Perspective was highly recommended by a family friend. I've never had a dog before so I was pretty clueless. I now understand how people fall in love with dogs. I knew my dogs reactivity needed to be addressed ASAP. Especially since she's a pitbull and they are discriminated against. Jesse is very knowledgeable patient and understanding. I was recovering from a brain injury and my anxiety was at an all time high when started working with Jesse after I was discharged. After the first session my dog was easier to walk and stopped pulling. Jesse helped me take voice recordings since my short term memory was affected during my injury. Since the obedience training I have seen him 3 times for refresher courses. I recently broke my collarbone and Jesse was over again to help me improvise our walks due to my newest injury.
