I was a bit apprehensive since we are boating novices, having only used a motorized boat once before. Turns out we had nothing to worry about. We were given a pristine, spacious pontoon (called the Bentley, if that tells you anything :), and the operator gave us crystal clear directions on how to use it. The person helping us also gave us a map of lake placid and pointed out good areas to stop for swimming and fishing. My kids had the time of their lives on the water. The operator was kind enough to suggest bringing one of their floating tubes and a fish net, all for no extra charge. I thought we would only be on the water for 2hrs at most, but we ended up being out for more than 3. The kids said they could have stayed out on the lake all day. We did not catch any fish but we all enjoyed the beautiful view in our clean, spacious pontoon. Given our inexperience, this excursion could have easily gone south, however Captain Marneys clearly cares about its patrons and goes the extra mile to make sure everything goes well. We will be back!

NOTE: if you are planning to go soon (this review is being written on 4/27/21) this boat rental shop will be VERY DIFFICULT to find. You need to look for the sign I have in my photos that tells you to text the number provided, then follow the dirt path behind the construction to the little desk that will give you instructions. This shop technically does have open hours, but we had to text the owner Greg upon arrival and then waited for him to come down and rent us a boat. In the future, I would recommend just texting before heading down there and meeting him when he's already there. Check out their website for full details of cost and times and such. $30/hour for most of your standard boats, including the fun bikes! We opted for a paddle boat so we could save money and be out on the water together. The hour flew by even though it was a little chilly when the wind blew. Cash only, which is inconvenient but understandable considering this biz is fully outside, and there's an ATM at the resort across the street if you need it. This is a great way to see Mirror Lake from a new vantage point and is TONS of fun. Happy boating!

The boats are junk and the owners are very shady…read more I reserved a pontoon boat for two days and I was specifically assured that I would not be expected to take the boat out or pay in the event of rain. Day 1 was okay weather-wise, however the boat itself was dirty, all of the seats were ripped and the carpet became soaked through from the underside. I brought it back in because there was something clearly wrong with the way the motor was sputtering but I was told it sounded normal. Day 2 it rained all day and when I called to discuss this with someone, I was told then owners would need to call me back. I called back 3 more times throughout the day and never heard back from the owners, and of course they charged me full price for the rainy day. I eventually got my money back after going through a dispute process with my cc company. It was clear that the employee that helped me was frustrated and knew he worked for shady owners. I know there are not a lot of options on Lake Placid, but do yourself a favor and find a boat somewhere else. If it were possible to give zero stars, I would.

We rented canoes from them twice - first to Raquette Falls and second up the river from their shop...both incredible journeys. If you come when it's frozen, you can ice skate or tobagganing ($5 for kids and double the cost for adults). They have a 30 foot ramp/chute that tobaggans can go on. It looks scary to me but I am sure it's fun for those adrenaline junkies and brave tobagganers. In the summer you can canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddle-board. Ironman competitions take place here too. There are fun ducks and seagulls to look at around the lake. It was more boring during the time that I came since it was too late for summer lake activities and too early for winter lake activities.

Fun songs, dad jokes told better, and I love to her say "Keep paddlin." Lori "Loves to SURF" . This is the best time in the Hudson. We spent several minutes in "Fluffy Box" and she even got the raft turned around!!! We also made it into Bus Stop and got in some good surf there as well. But wait - there's more! We went down Jiffy Pop Backwards!!!!! Bestest Ginger snaps and other super healthy lunch options too, washed down with yummy hibiscus pink tea. So - if you want the small company vibe that cares about you as a participant and partner, Square Eddy is the way to go.

Whereas some of the other local company have giant, full-size buses pushing through volume onto the river, this operation was intimate and friendly. In the short amount of time we spent with the owners, we got to know them and their friends very well. Linc was our guide and he was full of knowledge and information. He was also a tremendous guide as far as rafting is concerned. The lunch we all shared was homemade and delicious. The cookies we had were incredible. The fresh fruit was a nice touch too. In total there were 4 rafts and approximately 20 people. We didn't need to wait around for anyone and the entire operation felt smooth and well-planned. We had a phenomenal time and highly recommend this activity.
