We discovered by unplugging an alarm clock that was going off around 2:00 a.m. that the light in that plug had electrical tape all around the end of it with wires poking out. We unplugged that too. We woke to 62 degrees in the room although the thermostat was set on 69 degrees. The outlet on that wall wouldn't work in the morning, although it worked the night before. We had to move the coffee pot to the opposite wall to use it. We packed up and left around 9:00 and our room was already unlocked (it was a code to get into the room). I left a note on the desk but haven't heard back from the motel.

The High Peaks Information Center (HPIC) acted as home base for this jaunt in the outdoors. To park near the trailhead, there is a nominal fee - I paid $10 at a small gatehouse for their "half-day" non-member fee ($18 for full day and discounts for members). The staff person at the gatehouse inquired re: my hiking plans and made some suggestions so that my time in the area was both enjoyable and safe. The High Peaks Information Center is a wonderful resource for hikers and other outdoor adventurers. They offer guidebooks, maps, batteries, and other essentials as well as souvenirs such as mountain patches, etc. More importantly for my trip, they rent out microspikes and other items such as bear canisters, snow shoes, trekking poles, etc. Hiking was a last minute decision so I didn't have access to my typical trail gear and it was nice to know I could get some at a very reasonable price. The entire 2-mile+ trail that I traversed was a sheet of ice so I would not have been able to climb this peak without this rentable gear. Plenty of nearby benches/picnic tables to get my gear in order. Pleasant staff. Good experience. Views from the top of Mount Jo were well work the hour or so I put in from start to finish.

The staff will provide recommendations, directions, info about the weather on the top of a summit as well as at ground level, etc. This really is a must stop b4 hiking in the 'dacks! The other days it was in the 70's and nice. They have lots of shops and eateries, as well as an old looking theatre with newer movies. The town boarders Mirror Lake with beautiful views of the mountains behind it. It's a quaint town that's very walkable without any mainstream/popular stores or restaurants. Plenty of hotels here as well. It offers historic value, with the Olympic Center area and trails and winter sports too. Definitely a place worth visiting!

Lake Placid is about a 6 hour drive from NYC (with traffic)... but it's a very easy drive. The highway is I-87 N. My two bucket list items? - Dog Sled - run by an independent operator on Mirror Lake (Main Street side) - $10 per person - Bob Sled - held at the Olympic Sports Complex.
