Very concerning experience at Canon Music with our 4-year-old in a group piano class. About 10 minutes before class, several young children arrived early and were waiting in the classroom with their parents. There was no reminder about noise, no guidance on where families should wait, and no staff present to supervise the pre-class environment. A male teacher from a neighboring classroom suddenly rushed in, visibly upset, and loudly scolded the waiting children and parents, saying they were disturbing his class. The children and parents had no prior awareness that they were causing any issue, and the situation could have been easily handled through calm communication. Instead, the teacher's reaction immediately frightened the children--one child began crying on the spot, and my daughter froze in fear. The situation then escalated further when the teacher became involved in a heated confrontation with a parent that nearly turned physical, all in front of several 4-5-year-old children. After returning home, my child showed clear stress reactions and repeatedly expressed that she no longer felt safe returning to this location. For a children's learning environment--especially for preschool-aged kids--this lack of emotional safety was deeply troubling. Parents of younger or more sensitive children may want to consider this carefully. Update: Following this incident, Canon Music reached out, apologized, and refunded the unused portion of our tuition, which I appreciate. I also want to share that Ms. Julie, our group piano teacher, was very caring and dedicated, and our child really liked her. It's unfortunate that we won't be able to continue learning with her. There is no attention paid to kids who occasionally don't get concepts and lag behind. all responsibility is just on kids and parents to do homework, Teacher embarrasses kid and parent infront on whole class, totally demoralizing the Kid to continue learning Piano. class is just to get homework and what to prepare. a lot of pressure is put on kids for recitals who is essentially marketing for them. they even speak in Chinese in class with no regards to students who don't speak the language. Also, they don't honor any refunds if you move to a different location and cannot commute anymore. we were patient enough and sent our kid for almost 3 years to lean Piano and followed their methods, but my kid ended up hating to play piano and go to this place. there is no certificate or progress report, no structured curriculum, just move from one random book to another. we really tried to make it work hard and stayed committed but at the end if the kids start hating to learn Music, methods are wrong. I do not recommend this place for serious and long term Piano learning. read more

We are very happy with teacher Julie and her piano classes. Both our daughter and son attended her classes for ~3 years each, each starting at age 3 or 4. They both love music and enjoy playing the piano thanks to her. Teacher Julie has a great way of teaching music to kids. She does an excellent mix between listening training, playing the piano, and music theory, as well as some fun context every once in a while around famous composers and pieces. This makes the classes engaging and fun for the students. The class is in a group setting with usually 3-7 young students, which we think is a great advantage. The students don't feel too isolated learning music and they can learn from each other. The group classes also yield the opportunity for playing in ensembles which is fun. The students have opportunities to perform individually in front of their peers and parents, in class as well as during recitals, which boosts their confidence and motivation. Teacher Julie adapts well to the individual students in class. Our daughter and son have quite different personalities and strengths and we could see how teacher Julie worked with them differently, which speaks to her experience and professionalism. She knows how to challenge them, encourage them, and inspire them. We highly recommend teacher Julie to anyone who is looking for a piano teacher for their young kids. This place is a scam! DO NOT GO! My kid was in a group class in this school, and we paid for tuition for many months right before the pandemic hit (March 2020). The school asked the kids to practice by themselves for a few months, and then started online classes by a new instructor who basically asked the kids to learn the instrument like they knew nothing about it. My child had been playing the instrument for 2-3 years at that time. We refused to take the online class and asked for a refund. The owner rejected it. Later on that year, I googled the school and found that it was permanently closed. I even felt pity about it. However, earlier this month (January 2022), I thought about the school and found out it is reopened. I emailed the school and asked if there is any class available for my son to take. The owner ignored my email at first. After the second email, he/she told me that the classes are back now, and then again, he/she stopped communicating. If you don't want your money and time wasted, avoid this school! read more

From the outside this place might not seem like a music school, but they are pretty well organized. I was very happy with the service and environment they provided to my 9 year old daughter, especially at a very reasonable price. We had the option to put our daughter in a summer program like YMCA or some other academic program but we contacted Canon and spoke Young. Our daughter wanted to learn guitar. Young explained the school did not have an all day Guitar program and childcare but they created one for us. I have attached the daily program laid out by hour. Long story short, my daughter spent the entire summer at Canon, and I purposefully waited until now to provide a review because I wanted to confirm whether she picked up the foundation to continue playing. I am happy to say that my daughter learned the foundation, was able to play many songs when and had 2 recitals. Because of the relaxed and enjoyable environment, my daughter continues to enjoy playing guitar, continues to take classes (not at Canon because we live in downtown San Jose, but I wish were close so she could continue with Canon), and has become even a better guitar player. In addition to guitar classes (class of only 2 students for 1 month and then 1-on-1 for remainder of the summer, so she had plenty of personal guided time daily) daily lessons, practice, day care, my daughter had enough time to work on her summer HW packet from her school (it was like 200 pages thick), read during free time as we enjoy the different games and daily activities the school had. We liked this place so much that driving from downtown San Jose to Cupertino and back daily in traffic was very well worth it!! Bottom line, it is a great place to take your child for many different types of musical instruments. Music has actually helped my daughter with her confidence, Math, and analytical thinking. Her current guitar teacher told us she had developed good foundation and able to pick up a lot faster because of her abilities AND the foundation she had. Extremely happy! Wanted to get a sting replace don my ukulele and headed to my first local store to find that the "open" sign only meant that they were open for lessons and not any other business. A quick Yelp search fund Canon Music which is also very close to where I love but not in my main route. I am very happy I found it. Around 20 or so years ago, my family moved to Cupertino, California from Taipei, Taiwan. I was 13 years old and could only speak a little and read a bit of English. My parents wanted me to continue my music studies, so they sought out a piano instructor at a local music store. I took lessons throughout high school and had to quit lessons when I went to college. It was difficult to juggle everything from English language tutoring, piano lessons, and hours of homework, but luckily I did okay. Fast forward to now: I have a 7 year-old daughter, and I have enrolled her into an after-school day care program at New World/Canon Music Center. I want her to be exposed to Chinese language and its cultural heritage as much as possible, and New World/Canon Music is staffed with people that speak Mandarin/Taiwanese. As for Canon Music Center, it provides music instruction for various instruments, and in fact, I have enrolled my daughter in flute lessons with Masaru Koga and myself in guitar lessons with Steve Lin. My daughter is having a blast with her lessons with Mas. I am doing okay, I guess, with guitar lessons. Guitar is a very different instrument from piano. But anyway, Canon Music not only provides lessons, but also provides first-rate service for us students looking for sheet music, repairs, and rentals. I am renting a flute from them, but they also offer rentals for many other instruments. At one point, my daughter needed a repair on her flute; Canon, very quickly, swapped out the instrument for another; absolutely no headache involved. Canon Music is a bright, organized and friendly place, extremely well stocked with every method/series you could wish for! Also, they carry multiple editions of composer sets (ie. Beethoven Sonatas) for more advanced students. If they don't have something that you're looking for, the staff is always helpful and will order it for you right away. They will call you right when the order arrives, which generally is within a few days to a week. I highly recommend this place! We all love the class Ms Julie teaches, because she is very kind, patient, encouraging, extremely good with kids, and of course she is highly skilled in teaching piano. My daughter was a shy little girl when she started the class, and I wanted to find some activities that helps her to open up. With very young kids, Ms Julie tailored the class to get the kids to be interested in the music, and enrich the class with a lot of interactive activities, including singing and dancing with parents, playing different music instruments, understanding rhythm, and learning to play simple music on the keyboard. With little older kids (where my daughter is in now), Ms Julie fits the class to enrich kids learning on some basic theory as well as playing piano techniques. As a mom who's going to the class with my daughter, I'm benefiting a lot from this too! The class is extremely interesting, as Ms Julie makes it interactive. Ms Julie also pays attention to each individual kid- Each kid will get the opportunity to play the piano in the classroom, and Ms Julie will first always encourage the kids, then give them some corrections if needed. I have seen my daughter make significant progress, not only in playing piano, learning the music sheet, but also continuing to develop the interest in music, and she has been open up! She loves Ms Julie, and she always give her warm hug after each class she has with Ms Julie. Every teacher and staff are extremely friendly at Canon Music, and all my family love to go there. As a matter of fact, we not only just go there for the music class, every time when we are in the plaza, we will stop by and say hi. As a piano teacher starting up a studio in Cupertino, I couldn't ask for more! The store has lots of different method books and keeps them well-stocked, which is VERY helpful. A lot of stores have only a few books in each series. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable, and willing to order any books that they don't have in stock. However, if you are looking for non-piano music book, then they may not carry them. The good thing is that you can order it there, and when it arrives, they will give you a call. I stopped by here because some music books that our piano teacher asked us to buy were available through private sellers on amazon with a shipping price of $3.99. These guys had 3 out of the 5 books that I needed. They ordered the others and had them ready in a few days. They also have test prep materials for ABRSM, CM etc. I might buy all my future music books from these guys because they were super helpful, super friendly and knowledgeable. Glad to have unearthed this gem of a place! They saved me the trouble of driving to mountain view which is where the other music store that I like is located. The only con that I can think of is that they charge MSRP for their books. So, you need to pay the cover price which might be higher than online stores. But, the convenience is worth it. They have a lot of music lessons going on in the evenings, but, I am not familiar with them to comment. read more
