As my piano hadn't been tuned in a long time, he provided the option of a longer one time tuning or two separate tuning sessions one month apart. Given that the price difference was minimal and that it would have been easier for him to do a single session instead of coming here twice, I appreciate that he recommended the separate sessions to give the piano time to settle before subsequent fine tuning. He also recommended an in-piano dehumidifier as my location is very humid (which is true) and there are visible signs of moisture damage inside the piano. I highly recommend Jian Min. My daughter used to play piano but hasn't in years. Recently my 6 year old granddaughter started lessons and I decided to get it tuned. It's been about 20 years! Jian arrived on time, after examining he quoted me a price of $145 for medium level tuning and recommended 6 month retuning. It took him about 1 1/2 hours. He needed bright light and absolute quiet. He even had us turn off the heater. One key was stuck and he fixed that as well. Contacted Jian through Yelp and he responded almost immediately. He gave me an estimate and a couple possible times and we agreed on one. He did have to adjust the time once but it wasn't a big deal. He came on time, took off his shoes and went straight to our piano. Gave me a final pricing after he checked out the piano and then went to work. Took him about an hour and 15min. Called Jian on Friday and he had an opening for Saturday the next day. I have been looking for a piano tuner for a while and his came up on yelp. He picked up the phone right away and gave me the price breakdown. Also asked pertinent questions about how old the piano is, when we last tuned it. What my options were. When he came over, he knew the brand, korean and cheap haha. Gave me pointers on how to maintain, but also recognized that it wouldn't be done in a day, as it hadn't been tune in YEARS! I'm glad I came across this listing because the name speaks for itself. Not only was it affordable, the quality of work is way beyond the cost of the service. I bought my upright over 10 yrs ago. It was tuned for the first (and last) time about 9 years ago. I was sort of embarrassed to share that but felt he should know anyway. Jianmin simply said that due to it being so long since its last tuning, he would have to come back for a 2nd tuning to make sure it's going well. I believe his assessment is accurate and trustworthy. After the 2nd tuning session, I will have him come annually. FYI: Jianmin is very quiet, polite, and gets to work right away. He did asked for absolute quiet, which I think would make sense if you want things done right. Responsive, good communication and seems to know his way around pianos. I have an old Chickering upright piano that the previous owner of my house left behind. A couple keys were sticking and a number of keys weren't working at all. My daughter took lessons years ago and wanted to start up again, so for full transparency, we aren't "seasoned" piano players. We simply wanted to get the piano in working order so she can practice and if the passion continues, would consider an upgrade / further investment. I sent pictures of the inside of the piano and described what our objectives were (i.e., not looking for a perfectly tuned piano and just get it working before investing more into it). We made an appointment and he came by to inspect the piano. He noted that for a number of the hammers, the felt had fallen off but that they seemed to be lodged inside the piano. Given the age of the piano and that Chickering is no longer in business, there are no replacement parts. However, he could probably superglue the felts back on the hammers and loosen up the two sticking keys, which could be stuck due to the parts swelling from moisture. Quote for the repair and tuning was 4 figures. Not exactly "affordable" but like I note, we are piano novices, so that seemed a bit much for "just getting it playable." Maybe that is reasonable in the piano universe. To his credit, he was honest and said he would not spend the money to fix it. Based on that, I declined the repair. However, he did ask for $30 for his time (maybe a total of 10 minutes on site, not including whatever travel time), which is fair. Time is money and I certainly wouldn't want to waste my time on a client. Armed with what he told me, I found all the felts and superglued it myself to the hammers. Also found the cause of the sticking keys. There was a quarter coin lodged between the two keys, which I easily removed and now the keys work fine. Is that worth 4 figures? Not to me. Took me less than an hour to get it in playable condition. Is it tuned to perfection? Probably not, but may daughter has been able to practice on it and seems to sound OK to my unsophisticated piano ears. Although, I am an audiophile, so doesn't sound too off. At the end of the day, got the piano in "playable" condition for $31.75 ($30 fee for visit + $2 in superglue - 25 cents found in piano). Would I recommend? Yes. Guess it ended up working out for me and achieved my objectives for an "affordable" cost. UPDATE: To be clear, I am satisfied with Jianmin's customer service. He was honest with his opinion and didn't try to "sell" me on services. My review is my objective experience and as noted, ended up with the result I wanted, a working piano for a novice player without sinking thousands into a repair. Jianmin reached out to remedy the situation which didn't need remediation, but this shows his commitment to making customers satisfied so with that, am giving him 5 stars. I just had my piano tuned and I think it sounds just as good or better than the guys charging $200 to $250. Jian arrived right on time and it took about one hour. With Jian's price I will get an annual tuning instead of questiong if I can wait longer. I know other services might vacuum inside the piano or put some WD-40 on linkage (yes they did) , but the added cost is not worth it in my opinion. read more

Jian Min Xie tuned our 40-year old Baldwin grand, which hadn't been tuned for about 10 years. Jian Min used his electronic tuning device and determined that the piano wasn't that far out of tune and recommended a "basic" piano tuning, which was $95. The tuning took about 75 minutes. I don't know that the piano is tuned to "concert level," but the piano sounds fine. You can easily pay a lot more for a piano tuning, but I thought Jian Min was very professional and accurate. It's a no-frills service, but I think that's appropriate for the amount that he charges. And I really appreciate that he didn't perform a more-expensive service that I thought I needed and honestly just performed the basic tuning. My piano had not been tuned in long time and I reached out to Jian. He replied back very quickly and was able to schedule an appointment after I had sent him a pic of my upright. On the day of the appointment he arrived right on time with his equipment ready to go. He wore a mask, which I appreciated, and he began his assessment. Because the piano had not been tuned in such a long time, in addition to the standard tuning, it would also require additional tone adjustment. He said that the standard tuning would get me up to about 85% of the piano's potential so I went with that for $90. It would have been an extra $100 for the additional adjustment. The whole process finished in about an hour, as we gave him a quiet room to work in, free of distractions. Out the door with tip was $100 and the piano sounds amazing!
