Unexpected visit to Pella past the lunch rush. I ordered a steak quesadilla and it came with beans and rice. Really good chili rellenos are worth the visit. The chips are ok, and the salsa is above average. Margaritas are good, and usually the roasted chicken soup is really good. It is a meal in itself, with yummy melted cheese and a very tasty broth. Staff is friendly, service is fast, and food is good, if not great. The pineapple pork fajitas are surprisingly good, too. The building feels a little old and the tables are sometimes a little sticky (from a deteriorating finish on the wood, not from food or drink) in the bar side of the restaurant, but if you can think of this as it's own special ambiance you will have an enjoyable meal here. read more

We were in Pella for a Dr Appointment on Tuesday, April 25. We were excited to come to cantaritos after hearing good things about it. We got there at 2:25 in the afternoon. When we arrived, there was no one at front to meet us. Eventually my husband went to the front area to check and nobody was there. We debated leaving but decided to wait. While waiting I grabbed a takeout menu to see what to order. It had a lunch menu but didn't say when they stopped serving lunch. When a server finally saw us, we were seated. He ran off to get chips. When he returned I pointed out what I wanted in the lunch menu. He said no, it was past time for lunch. We asked when it stopped and he said 2:30. I checked the time and it was 2:33. He still said no. We said we'd been waiting to be seated for 5 minutes but he just kept saying no. I finally said ok, I just wanted to order the mini chimichangas from the dinner menu, he said no, we only have those for lunch. That was the last straw! It might have been better if this gentleman had been nicer about it but he acted so put out that he even had to wait on us that we just got up and left. That was the rudest we've ever been treated and you should be ashamed with that level of customer service! read more

This seems very run of the mill mexican. We had the chicken arroz, guac, tamale and ceviche today. Salsa had a taco seasoning flavor to it that was ok. The tamale texture and sauce was fantastic but the beef was chewy in places and I didn't love that flavor. Guac looked a little dark like it was sitting out. Chicken arroz was typical fair. First time at Cantaritos and though we've been past it plenty of times, never stopped for some reason. Well today we did and I can say I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is nice and service was quick. My wife had the Fit Fajitas which she described as delicious. My son had the California burrito and he got through half of it. I had the Tampiqueno Steak which is a combination of Ribeye, Chorizo, and Chicken with homemade corn tortillas and rice and beans. All the dishes were very good. The menu is extensive and the hardest part of the visit is trying to decide what to order. I would definitely go back. You could easily share any of these dishes. All of us brought back half of our meals. If you're in Pella or somewhat close, Cantaritos is worth the drive. read more

The business recently took over the location from another restaurant and has quickly become a favorite. The portions are huge and everything tasted delicious. We have been here several times and each time the food has been excellent, the margaritas are very good as well. The food is clearly a step above most Mexican restaurants and the service is friendly but slooow Depending on your mood.... it may be a good or a bad thing. If you are hanging with friends for drinks and in no hurry....go at a peak time and you will have ample time to visit. I prefer to go at the slower times of the day and get service a little quicker. If you like spicy...the chili Colorado is very much so. (A little too hot for my taste buds, but I'm kind of a weenie). The corn tortillas are hand made, the chips and salsa are pretty standard and although we have not tried it yet...they will make guacamole for you at the table side. The grilled fish tacos are very good and come with a super spicy pink sauce that is addicting enough to keep going back for the pain and after burn. The rice that comes on the side is more like a pilaf and definitely different from the usual orange Mexican rice that you would usually find accompanying in a regular Mexican restaurant My absolute favorite is the cowboy fajitas (steak, carnitas, chorizo and thin sliced beef ribs)....absolutely a stunning combination that comes in a massive portion with the standard beans, rice and a nice surprise of an unusual cabbage salad. Of course with the homemade corn tortillas. So far the only thing that we have not liked so much was the Mole...a little too thick and smoky for our tastes. But there really is no standard for Mole...you may enjoy it. I look forward to trying other adventures on their menu...like the egg dishes and many drinks and deserts. Just can't get past those cowboy fajitas. :) Easily one of the best restaurants in Pella and probably the best Mexican restaurant in southern Iowa. read more
